Report New American Philippine Landing Japs Report Landing On Palawan Island Washington, March 1. — (UP) — Approximately 3,000 American troops were reported by Tokyo today to have landed on 275-miie long Palawan island, westernmost of the Philippines. Palawan, if the enemy report is true, would be the 17th island in •the Philippines invaded by American amphibious forces. A Tokyo broadcast, recorded by, FCC, said the Americans lauded a> “regiment” of troops Wednesday morning (Japanese time) on Palawan, connecting link between Mindoro in the Philippines and Borneo in the Dutch East Indies. The broadcast admitted the Japanese had only a small garrison on the 4,027 sqhare-mile island, but claimed it was offering “violent” resistance. There was no indication where tlie reported landing occurred on Palawan, although the principal port of Puerto Princesa on the east coast of big Honda Bay, just to tbp north, seemed likely invasion points. Gen. Douglas MacArthur, in his regular communique iseued at. Manila today, reported that strong formations of American attack bombers hammered Japanese installations at Puerto Princesa on Monday (Philippine time). The island, 750 miles due east of Saigon in French Indo-China, stretches from southwest to northeast and is flanked on west by the South China Sea and on the east by the Sulu Sea.
