1945 Sectional Sixth In Row For This City Yellow Jackets And Pleasant Mills Are Only Double Winners With the opening of the 1945 sectional tournament Thursday night, Decatur will be host to the Adams high school net teams for the sixth consecutive year. The sectional was awarded to Decatur in 1940, following the completion of the junior-«enior high school, and that year’s tourney was the first in Decatur since 1931. In the years from 1931 to 1940, the Adams county teams were divided, with the Decatur Yellow Jackets and Monmouth Eagles competing in the Fort Wayne sectional, and the other quintets vieing with the Wells county teams in the Bluffton tourney. For the first three years after 1940, the local sectional was composed of nine teams, but with the admission of the Decatur Catholic high school to the Indiana high school athletic association, the Decatur tourney was increased to 10 teams in 1943. The increase to 10 teams also added an extra session to the local sectional, which previously had been held in sessions Thursday night, Friday night, and Saturday afternoon and night. With the addition of the Commodores ,a Friday afternoon session was necessitated. Tourney Champions Only three different schools have won sectional honors in the five (Turn To Page 4, Column '8) o Arrangements Are Made For Tourney Here Plans for the Decatur sectional tournament, which will be held at the junior-senior high school gym next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, were completed at a meeting of principals of the participating schools, held last Thursday at the office of W. Guy Brown, host principal. Season tickets for the sectional went on sale at all schools in the county Monday morning. The season tickets, good for all five sessions, are priced at $1.50. Doors of the gymnasium will be opened to season ticket holders only one hour before the opening of each session. No single admission tickets will be placed on sale until 30 minutes before the session opens, thus giving season ticket holders the opportunity to obtain choice seate. Orn WELCOME oEm fans
THE HEARTIEST of welcomes from the Decatur Daily Democrat to the Adams counity high school basketball teams, coaches, school officials and fans on the eve of the sixth consecutive sectional basketball tournament in Decatur. -—-oOo —- SCANNING the records of the 10 competing teams for the past season can lead to only one conclusion—.the Decatur sectional tournament promises to be the most wideopen tourney ever held in this city. • oOo DECATUR'S Yellow Jackets, last year’s sectional champions, do not rate much of a chance to repeat their winning performance. The Jackets, who added the Huntington regional crown to their sectional title last year, have won only six of 20 games played this season. And in addition, the Jackets suffered a tough blow on the eve of the sectional when Donn Eichar, regular guard, was ordered to report for active duty with the nation’s armed forces on February 22, the day the sectional opens. Bill Bromer is the only regular from last year’s championship sqjtad who returned to school this year, all others being lost by graduation. —oOo— FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS, BASKETBAWL has had the temerity to hazard a guess on the outcome of all tourney games in this special tourney edition. In these five years, BASKETBAWL has been exactly right only once. Last year we did fairly well, picking the champions, and being fooled on only two games. oOo BUT THIS YEAR—ah, that’s a different story. Os the 10 teams competing, we would count out just three as not having a chance to come through. These three? Jefferson (not scared on this one); Pleasant Mills (lost too many boys to the nation’s service and by injuries); and Hartford (seems to have slipped badly in the past two months). oOo ANYHOW, with tongue in cheek, following are BASKETBAWL'S predictions, game for game. (Honestly, we didn’t flip a coin on more than half these choices). PLEASANT MILLS-KIRKLAND—See second paragraph above. The Kirkland Kangaroos are odds-on favorites here. So, we pick KIRKLAND. MONROE-GENEVA — The Cardinals are the county champions, these .teams have met three times, the Cardinals have won all three tilts. So, we pick GENEVA. oOo— JEFFERSON-COMMODORES — The Warriors haven’t come close to winning a game for two seasons and it doesn’t appear logical the 1945 sectional is time to break that losing streak. So we pick the COMMODORES. MONMOUTH-HARTFORD—The Gorillas defeated Monmonuth early in the seaeon but the Eagles came back for a decisive victory in the county tourney. Quote earlier mention. So, we pick MONMOUTH, 'OOo ■■ DEftATUR YELLOW JACKETS-BERNE—These teams have- met three times this season, with the Bears winning twice in regular scheduled games and the Jackets scoring a triumph in the New Years day itourney. Further, the loss of Eichar will be felt by the Jackets. So, we pick BERNE. bOo— —• KIRKLAND-GENEVA—This should be a humdinger. These teams first met in the county tournament, with Geneva eliminating the Kangaroos after a terrific battle which went into two overtime periods. But, three weeks later, Kirkland turned the tables on the Cardinals, and on the Geneva floor, 39 to 28. So, we pick KIRKLAND. COMMODORES-MONMOUTH—The Commies defeated Eagles twice during the season, once by 16 points and once hy six. ’That third time’s the charm’ business might trip up the Commies. However, we are not superstitious. So, we pick the COMMODORES. oOo ’ BERNE-KIRKLAND—These teams have not met, so no direct comparisons are available. Kirkland has a far bette: season’s record but has not played as tough competition as

the Bears. So, we pick BERNE. —oOo COMMODORES-BERNE —Again, these two teams have not met. (Maybe ithey won’t meet, either). Both have about the same season’s records, both have been inconsistent, blowing hot and cold. However, we never heard of cochampions in an Indiana sectional tournament. So, we pick BERNE.
