Jasper Leads In Final Poll Os Prep Teams Indianapolis, Feb. 19., — (UP) Southern Indiana's bid for its fourth state high school basketball championship in five years will be u rousing success, the 13th and final United Press statewide rankings of the 1944-45 season indicated today. As the 776 hopeful 'title contenders prepared for the start of the month-Jong tourney opening next Thursday night, it was the south, suh—and with a vengeance—in the rankings. The "solid south” (basketbally epeaking) had Jasper’s Wildcats in first place, Jeffersonville's Red Devils in second and the defending State champions from Evansville Bosse in third. And for good measure, Bedford’s Stonecutters held the No. 9 position. Oddly, Jasper, Jeffersonville and Bosse batted .500 in a round-robin of games with each other. The Wildcats' only defeat in an 18-game campaign was by Bosse, 41-39. Jeffersonville lost to Jasper, 49-37, but downed Bosse, 26-23. Bedford lost to all three. Being in fire place in the rankings was old situff to the towering, fast-breaking Jasper Wildcats. They were there in 11 of the 13 polls and their first place ballot in the final listing assured them of the favorite’s nod in the state tourney. If either Bosse, Jeff or Jasper goes all th/way on the 'tournament trail, it would be southern Indiana's fourth state cage title in five seasons. Washington won in 1941 and made it “Washington, too, in 1942.” Bosse triumphed last March. The way for a southern Indiana stranglehold on the first three statewide positions was paved by Gary Emerson’s upset of Gary Lew Wallace last Friday. That knocked Wallace from third to fourth and enabled Bosse to move from fourth to third. Wallace was the only one of the first 20 teams in 'the United Press rankings to suffer the pangs of de-. . feat last week, leaving the 13th listing the same as the week before , with the exception of the Hornet fall to fourth place. The rankings: J—Jasper (17-1). 2. —Jeffersonville (16-2). 3. Evansville Bosse (16-2). 4. —Gary Lew Wallace (19-2). 5. —South Bend Riley (19-2). 6. —lndianapolis Tech (16-21. 7. Kokomo (17-3). 8. Elkhant (15-3). 9—Bedford (14-4). 10.—Hammond High (15-5) and Indianapolis Broad Ripple (19-I)—tie. The well-regarded fives were Au- , burn (16-2), Anderson (15-5), Cui- , ver (18-4), Evansville Memorial (15-1), Leo (22-0), Linton (17-4), Mitchell (15-3), Scottsburg (16-1) and Terre Haute Gerstmeyer (IG--2).
