Richard Swygart, 1115 West Madison St. Sit —— o — YANKEE TROOPS (Continued From Page 1) were believed to be thinnust because of the rugged terrain. Newly constructed pill boxes and tank traps were expected to hamper the American advance behind the west wall, however. On tne first army front, units of the American 78t.h division were fanning out along the west, bank of the Roer river immediately north of captured R’tttt’berg. Ou their right flank, the ninth infantry seized t'hci Urt.atepe.rre dam intact and as closing in rapidly on the huge Schwamnienuel dam. the main dam controlling the level of the Roer to the north. American control of the Roer dams would facilitate an offensive across the lower reaches of the river on the U. REVEALS BIG THREE (Continued From Page 1) Asahi, as quoted by the German transocean agency, said the question of Soviet participation would "most certainly be raised," since the Pacific war situation was “nearing the decisive stage.” “There can be no doubt that Japan, tie well as tlic Anglo-Americans, is now wondering what position Russia is intending to take,” Asahi said. — Markets At A Glance By United Press Stocks, irregularly high; moderately active. Vincennes, denounced the measure as ‘a scheme to get more men on the fire departments,” but it was passed, 34 to 11, in what amounted to a city-farm division of members. Senators amended a state board of education bill asking for power to permit the board to rule on the advisability of building new schools. Originally, the bill would give the board power to reject any school plan. As amended, the school city still could build despite disapproval by the state board. 0 Fort Wayne Woman Is Burned To Death Fort Whyne, hid., Feb. 6—'(UP) — Mrs. Nellie Clifton, s(t, died today of burns received when her house caught on fire last, night. ONLY ONE MORE Philippine battle-site, Corregidor, now remains to be taken by the forces of Gen. Douglas MacArthur for the gallant American commander to complete his “return” to the islands which he left in March, Vi 2, by order of the president. Entry into Manila and the push on Bataan peninsula leaves Corregidor the goal of U. S. forces on Luzon. Corregidor is an island fortress in the mouth of Manila bay. Although heavily fortified, it fell to overwhelming Jap forces almost three years ago. It was here that Lt. Gen. Jonathan Wainwright, left in command of American and Filipino forces on the islands, surrendered lo the Japs. 'The photo above is of Fort Mills on Corregidor island. (International i

TOP WAR OFFICIALS (Continued From Page 1) i seated in the house by only 10 ■ votes, the measure appeared cerI tain of gaining support of some ■ Democratic senators opposed to ■ the more stringent provisions of tlie work-or-else bill. Revercomb said tile bill before , the committee represented “the i longest step the government lias I yet, taken over the private lives of the American peqple.” The Republican substitute, he declar'd, "will do’ away with many features of enforced labor and absolute control of the government over individual citizens.” The substitute provides for an immediate survey and reclassifi--1 cation of draft-age men and an investigation of labor hoarding. Men of draftable age in nonessential industry would be called for service, and "loafers" who 1 are not working would be drafted into the army aud navy for non- ’ combat service. ' The bill authorizes selective service, with the aid of other government agencies, to make a complete national survey of plants to ferret out labor hoarding and waste. The agencies would have the power to cut down the number of workers in any plant. —o Negro Confesses To Rape-Slaying Covington. Ga., Feb. 6.—(UP) — Newton county sheriff W. G. Ben- ' ton said today that a 19-year-old negro farm hand confessed to the ‘ fatal rape-slaying of Mrs. Emma Pipe Berry, 63, early Sunday morning. Benton jailed L. C. Johnson, the confessed slayer, in Atlanta county prison because of high feeling here. Johnson signed a confession admitting that he entered the Berry home Sunday morning while the dead woman’s husband, James, was buying a newspaper. Johnson said he struck Mrs. Berry with a "battling stick” —a heavy stick used to stir boiling clothes. He ■ said he then assaulted her. Police found Mrs. Berry lying in a pool of blood. 0 Trade in a Good Town — Decatur
