DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT, DECATUR. INDIANA
Stale Champs Meet i Jeffersonville Five Indianapolis, Jan, 11. — (UP) — Evansville Bosse’s Bulldogs tonight hope to take a long stride forward in their uphill battle to convince ; the experts that “we can do it ■ again” in the Indiana high school' kasbetball championship grind. Practically the same quintet which came from nowhere last March to grab the 1944 state dia-| dem, Bosse barely had gotten 194445 play underway before Jasper’s | i all-conquering Wildcats began stealing the headlines from the! Pocket City Bulldogs. Latest state-wide rankings show , Jasper is first; Bedford, anothersouthern Indiana powerhouse, in second and coach Herman Keeler’s ; defending state champions in third. I But. the Bulldogs, who own 18 straight victories over the two- i season span, plan to upset that | alignment tonight at Jeffersonville; by coining through with an impre-: sive decision over what is regarded as the state’s seventh-ranking! quintet. Everything points to a lopsided , Bosse triumph. The Bulldogs clubb-. ed city rival Central, 54-28, last Friday,-while in tnid-December Central stopped Jeffersonville. 31-21. However, Jeffersonville's Re-i Devils figure they can stage a “man bites Bulldog” reversal. Red Devil partisans point out the fact that “big Charlie” Meyers, their scoring ace. mjaiaged only one field goal .. in the' Central game and insist that Meyers “will never be that; cold again.” w L Basically, tonight’s" , game will | match quintets employing the same; system of play. Bosse has JuliuW" (Bud) Ritter, all-state center, to | I counteract Meyers’ effectiveness on . the pivot. Both teams rely on j , clever ball-handling on the front line; but disdaining the fast break. BBosse’s bid edge, of course, should c come from the dribbling-perfection- t] ist, Bryan (Broc) Jerrell, diminu- n live red-haired guard. t j The Jeffersonville-Bosse clash, n overshadowing every prep cage game in Indiana this week-end, was i expected to draw a capacity crowd j of 4,372 sane to the spacious Jeff ! f; gymnasium. ' - Michigan City and New Albany, a pair of well-regarded quintets which lost a lot of face last week, bounced back last night with a vengenancto Michigan City invaded South Bend, and trampled Adams’ upset-specialists, 52-32, while New Albany broke a three-game losing streak by smashing Bloomington. 42-17. b No Closed Season On Red Fox In County — Walter Krienke, state gamei warden, stated today that there i is no closed season on the hunt-; ing of red fox in Adams county.; as erroneously stated recently.: This county is in the northern zone, in which red fox may be hunted all year. The season for trapping of furbearing animals will close at upon Monday, January 15. The rabbit season closed yesterday. o — _ ! Fort Wayne Reports Lowest Temperature By United Press Fort Wayne was the coldest city in Indiana today with a recording of six degrees below zero and the rest of the state shivered In belownormal temperatures, but the weather bureau promised some relief tonight. The frigid wave, ushered in by a blanket of snow over most north and central Indiana, maintained the ; ice coating on streets and highwaysl and increased traffic • hazards be-; cause of “slick spots'” on roads.
