■ J"'”-' I SUNDAY hterm/foml I SCHOOL LESSON<By HAROLD L. LUKDQUUT. D. D. I Leaaon for November 12 Lesson subject! and Scripture texts so- 1 . »cu%^t^^Vdu‘?.t&‘‘ r 2^fU I permission. : j THE CHURCH DURING WAR AND i PEACE LESSON TEXT—Matthew J UM: Romans 11:1-9. I GOLDEN TEXT-Blessed sre the peaeemskets: for they shall be celled eons St God -Matthews B W. Everywhere men a< talking about > the coming peace They are concerned lest having iron a war we may lose the peace through the aeifishness or the Indifference of men. It is a great problem and one about which we are rightly concerned. Why is it then thet the most important factor in assuring a just and friendly settlement of the problem is left out of men's deliberations? Why is there so little (If any) thought of God and prayer to Him for the needed guidance and wisdom? Ws know that there can never be I an abiding peace until Christ comas j to establish His kingdom, but in the ; meantime, wo should seek to bring Christian principles to besr on the ' relations of men snd nations. We ; are to show: I. A Higher Measure of Love (Matt 5:43-48). The world has established Its own ' principle of conduct bssed on selfish advantage. It pays to be polite to those who can favor you. so cultivate their good will by acts of courtesy and kindness. Your neighbor may be able to help you in an hour of need, so do good to him as you have opportunity. But an enemy—what can you ! gain from kindness to him? Hate him, and treat him like an enemy. Christianity knows nothing of such a spirit. Even though it be neees- • sary to fight against wicked men in I order to hinder their evil plans, we need not lose our love for them. Even those who despitefully use us may be loved for Christ s sake. [ "Consider Him that endured such I contradiction of sinners against Him- , self" (and went right on loving { them), “lest ye be wearied" in i your own love for those who bear . the sad name of enemies (see Hob. < 13:3). This Is admittedly a high stand- ? •rd. but it Is not too high for those j who know the love of Christ. 11. A Higher Degree as Loyalty (Rom. 13:1-4). An intelligent Christian is the best ; citizen He knows that ail govern- ' ment is based on the power snd ! authority of Ood, and henee he rec- i ognizes the legality and authority of duly constituted governmental agencies. i No matter how mueh man has per- I verted or degraded government, yet it is tn essence the expression I of a ministry of God (v. 4). How i deeply ashamed that should make those who regard political office as a means of personal gain and advantage. or who use their authority to permit or promote that which is against God. Every public official should recognize God as the giver of his authority and seek the Lord's special grace and guidance in the discharge of his duties. Every citizen should highly regard the one who rules as having a power ordained of God (v. 1), for the good of the nation (v. 4). Here then is the solution of the political problems which are causing upheaval all over the world, namely, a revival of Christian testii many end faith, to- r wiH lead to a i loyalty on the part of the people which Is quite unknown where Christianity does not bring its true InI fluence to bear. That kind of love for men and loyalty to government necessarily I brings about: ID. A Higher Standard of FatriI etism (Rom. 13:5-7). I There ia more to real patriotism | than flag waving and higb-sounding | oratory. There must be & eonsefI entious willingness to Mrve the nsI tion in willing obedience to the command or the request of proper authority. ‘ • The Christian gives just that kind of patriotic support to his country (▼. 5). His enlightened conscience demands ft, and he responds. Then too. there must be support of the government by the payment of taxes. Thick of the thousands who are engaged tn tile bualMss of evading their just share of the cost ot government The Christian has no share in such things, tor ho Is ready to pey hie share of the expenae of government »a a ministry es the Lord <v. •), No government cen function properly nor long endure which does not have the respect and confidence of those governed. There ean be nothing but criticism. discontent, and disobedience ia such an atmosphere. We have said it before, but we eay it egain—the beet thing that could happen to America politically to a revival es Chrtottanity. Our national leaders ought to set the example and escourage the people to follow to repentance. reoWuifoa end God s bleeeiAf Bead U threatI eke 7; to
