Creamed Comments On The Sunday School Lesson — - —— — -
I. Creamed comments on the Hun- (. day st hool lesson. "David Anointed King”—l Samuel 16:118 for Sunday September 10. t Clod's great purpose Is not thwartI ed by man's failure; Saul who had , failed God is now going out as r king while David Is coming In as „ i king. 1 v 1 "And Jehovah said unto Samuel How long wilt thou mourn ~ for Saul, seeing I have rejected j- him from being king over Israel? fill ’hy horn with oil. and go; I will send thee to Jesse the Rethlehemlte; tor I have provided me a king among his sons” Samuel s •orrow over Saul's disobedience wax seen by the Lord who would direct him Into a path of Joyful r service i v 2 "And Samuel said. How • tan I go? If Saul hear it. he will kill me. And the laird said. Take a heifer with thee, and say. I come i to sacrifice unto the Lord." In facing danger. Samuel was to find the needed strength in the Lord through worship. That is God's way today v 3. "And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee God gives knowledge to the one who obeys him in doing his will up to the limit of revealed truth It is not a question of doing right tomorrow it is doing the tight thing now that matters moat. 1 v 4 "And Samuel did that* whir l) the Lord spake, and came to B-thiehem And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said. Coinest thou peaceably?" Too bad it. when you see the preacher! coming, you have to ask. “Now 1 what have I been doing’" v 5. "And he said. Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the’ laird sanctify yourselves, and, come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons.! and called them to the sacrifice." I This was ceremonial purification consisting of washing and avoidance of any thing uncle:;: Samuel gave special attention to the members of the family that they might be ceremonially dean Heart-purity, is exesntial for spiritual progress. ' v 1! "And Samuel said unto I Jesse Are here all thy children?. And he said. There remaiueth yet the youngest, and. behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse. Send and fetch' him. tor we will not sit down till he come hither." Samuel was impressed with the eldest as being the chosen one but it was revealed to him otherwise. The other sons were looked over but none of them were acceptable to God David was considered so Insignificant that hia father thought him a hopeless case; hut later he must have learned that "with the Lord" made a big difference. v. 12 "And he sent and brought him in Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the [yird «ald. Arise and anoint him." It Is thought from hia description of that David, was small of stature, had red hair and a light complexion with fair eyes. Mis outward appearance was quite the opposite of that of Saul's. Here was an opportunity for God to show what he could do with an insignificant man If given a chance v. 13. "Then Samuel took the horn of oil. and anointed him In the midst of his brethren; and the spirit ot the Ixird came upon f»avid from shat day forward." David was made conscious of the continual presence of God. Man only becomes Christllke when practicing the presence of the Lord. vs. 14 15. "But the spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and air evil spirit of the Lord troubled him And Haul's servants said unto him B< hold now. an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.” If the laws of the Spirit of God are not given a chance to work then the laws of the evil spirit will operate. God places these laws in life to operate as one chooses to obey the power back of them vs. IS. 17. "Let our Lord now command thy servant*. which are before thee, to seek out a man. who Is a cunning player on the harp, and It shall come to pass when tb»- evil spirit from God is u|xm thee that sh< shall play with bis hand and thou shalt I* well. And Haul said unto hia servants.
