LESSON TEXT—lxodu* 20 3-7: Matthew 4 10: C 0; John 4 23. 24. GOLDEN TEXT—God 1* a Spirit: and they.that worihip him muat worabip him in ipirit and In truth —John 4 24 The first three commandment* bring man into the presence of God, wheye he i* taught how to wor»hip God in spirit and tn truth. •’The first commandment (Exod. 20:3) bids us worship God exclusively; the second <W. 4-6) bids us worship Him spiritually. The first commandment forbid* us to worship false gods; the second forbid* us to worship the true God under false forms” (Farrar). The third commandment (v. 7) Indicates that true worship will deal reverently with the name of God. Israel had lived among the Egyptian*. a people known for their worship of Images, and were about to enter into Canaan where there were many false god* The Lord was therefore careful not only to forbid the worship of other gods, but also to forbid the malting of image* of any kind, whether they represented the many gods of heathendom, or were attempt* to symbolize the true God 1. The Command Io Worship (Exod. 20:3-7).
God first claims the entire devotion of man. If He is Jehovah, the Lord Cod, it is obvious that there can be no other god before Him. He is a personal God (v. 2> with whom it is possible for man to have fellowship. He must come first in our thought and our love. The second commandment expressly forbids idolatry in any form. The injunction is twofold. (1) Men are forbidden to make any material likeness which to them represents a being to be worshiped It matters not whether it be an image or what men believe God to be like, or the image of an angelic being, a heavenly body, in fact, "anything that is in the heaven above.” or on the earth—such as a mar. or animal; or under the water—such as a ush. (2) If such objects have been made either by ourselves or others we may not bow down to them, nor render any service to them. Let us all examine our religious ceremonies and practices in the light of God's commandment. Observe that obedience to this command brings rich blessing to "thousands” (v. 6). whereas disobedience Is a eurse not only to tbe man who disobeys, but also to his desaendants. T£e careless, vain or irreverent use of God's name is forbidden (v. 7). How common that practice is today. eveji among Christian people. If we do not actually use His name, we use some slang expression which stands for His name. Now we turn to two passages from the Gospel of Matthew to see how Jesus practiced these commandments JI. The Example of Christ (Matt. 4:W; 0 9). To the temptation of Satan, offering rich reward for an act of worship to himself. Jesus gave prompt and effective reply by quoting Deuteronomy 6:13. Thus He gave His approval to the command that all our worship and service is to be given to God. This spirit shows itself in the reverent devotion of the prayer <!:•> which Jesus taught His disciples. The name of God is to be hallowedthat is, to be regarded as holy. No one set a higher example of that than our Lord Himself God. He was obedient to the Father, even unto death, always doing those things which pleased Him and honored His name (John I 28. Phil »:•>.
IH. The Manser of Tree Wonhip (John 4:33. 24). God ia to be worshiped in spirit and in truth not in dead formalism or by empty ritual There must be reality in such devotion. One would suppose that a truth so obvious and vital would long since have completely saturated the life of the chureb as well as of the in dividual believer. •‘God is a Spirit, and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and to truth.” Even today, countless men and women still believe that worship has something to do wit{> place (w 34. 31) or race (v 32* or some other external device ar formula What a pity, when the gracious and delight fol way to worship is through personal spiritual communion between God and man. Deadening formalism is not our only enemy. Creamed Comment* on the Sunday School Les on. Abiding values from Israel's history. Deuteronomy 11:13-25 for Sunday. September 26 Moses realizing that hi* .-nd wn* near, . et about, under the command of God. restating the divinely given law. explaining it more fully In th" light of forty years’ experience, and emphasizing again its essential spiritual nature. V. 13. "And It shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my comniandents which I command you this day to love Jehovah your God. and to erve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” The key word of thia lesson i* obedience. The formula is that obedience will bring God * bles-ing* and disobedience, his punishment. V*. 14. 15 "That I will give the rain <>i your land In iw season, the former rain and the latter rain, that
thou maye-t gather in thy grain, and the new wine, and thine oil. And I will give grass In thy field* for thy cattle, and thou ohalt eat and lie full." God watches over our welfare and sees to it always that obedience receive* It* full reward While riche* do not always follow piety, yet it can be said that reward always follows obedience. God sees to it that those who love him experience the full reward of hit love for them V*. 16 17. "Take heed to yourselves. lest your heart be deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods and worship them; and the anger of the l<ord be kindled against you. and he -hut up the heaven*, so that there shall be no rain, and the land shall not yield it* fruit: and ye perish quickly from the good laud which Jehovah hath given you.” Here is a *olemn warning not to follow ideal* and practice* of those with whom w > awoctate when such ideals and practices are not right in the -ight of God We must not forget that the anger of God though different from W-«*u*>i is something very real. ft WWfrrent from ours in that it i> a part and parcel of hi* love. God’* promise of victory was conditioned upon their obedience. Throughout Israel* long history. when the people, led by worthy leaden*, served the Lord,, they were victorious and piv-per-ou*. otherwise, the nation declined The value of Bible study Is to show us our possible victory or our paslble defeat V*. 24. 25. "Every place whereon the ade of your foot shall tread shall lie yours; from the wilderin--*, and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates), even unto the hinder sea shall lie your border There ehall no man be able to stand before you: Jehovah your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye shall tread upon, as he hath spoken unto you." Here God offered euch a great blessing, so vast and expensive that they could not comprehend it; their faith was too weak and ao they posse *--d only a part of the promised blessings in this life: so is it too often with our faith. • o E kitn-w at Cambridge Bay Anglican Mission have contributed fox dur* in the belief that they could "buy a missionary." Canon Archibald Webster of the Arctic recently visited the point, traveling 2.2*0 mile* by * ledge and dog team. There h*i been no missionary in charge at that point for three yean*. In the present crises a tremsnd ous new demand for book* on all phases of religion is evidencing itself in the -sales record* of the various publishing bouses. Publishers' Weekly, booksellers' trade journal, quoted report* of corre-pondenu who said that religious books were advancing ahead of all otheis. and that the layman was the dominant purchaser. The thirteen Methodist Publishing Hou-re say tnat they are selling more books than ever Comparing nine different title*, they indicate that "in I*4l those titles told lews than half as well a* they did In 1942 The exact increa-e in one year's’ time was 11 OH." Both Harper and Macmillan, in the general publishing field, report a rise in sale of religious non-fic-tion and the Bible. They remark that the rise is "astounding.” The Pre byterlan Church of England ha* launched a plan to raise 11.000.000 for church purpose* after the war. Most of Ute fund will be used to rebuild bombed churches, provide churches in new areas and rat-e ministerial salaries to a minimum of 91.700 a year. Dr. Lynn Harold Hough, after spending several months in England and studying closely the situation there, wrote: "Someone has estimated that it would take 10 years of inten-e bombing to destroy London One suspects ths' a very much longer period would be required for the cru'htng of the Eng llsh spirit, if indeed it could be crushed at all. You stand -edly by the ruin* of the City Temple. But on Sunday you look out upon a congregation gathered from all about London and its environs In spite of the reduction of conveyances of every kind and the scattering of the membership of the church to various parts of England” OwiPmkh** A Can you take it?
