New Industry’ Is Operating In City Musical Boxes Are In Production Here A n<-W "Industry" has been set up In Dccattir probably the smallest and most novel in the city. Noah Steury. salnu manager of the Wayne Novelty company here, has started the hutaero In tbe former grocery building at 316 St. Mary’s street. "Swiss Musical Boxes" are assembled there. The wooden boxes are made at the novelty company and the "Swiss musical units'' are shipped hdre from Switzerland, via Chicago. The unexcelled ability of the Swiss people In making watch movements is adequately demonstrated in their ability to manufacture the “units,” a tiny little metal affair resembling somewhat the out moded player-piano roll "111 revenue.” Instead of the holes punch’-d in a paper roll providing the notes, a tiny metal cylinder with minute projections snaps . small springs of varying sizes and this produces the sharp tones of , the old-faehtoned mush box. “You’re in tbe Army Now.” "God ' Bless America." "In the Gloaming" and other tuneg attest to the fact that the Swiss know what the Americans want In music. The units are packed 12 to a box, each dozen capable of producing a different tune. Despite war restrictions and submarine warfare, the industry has i experienced no difficulty thus far

In bavinr units shipped here, a last shipment carrying 6,000 of the tiny little objects. David Steury of near .Monroe, who will be remembered as having suffered the loss of a leg in a fail from a barn at the Schmitt farm, is serving as “foreman" of the new Industry. His daughter; the owner’s son, Norman, and Lyman Hann, Jr., are among others who work part time in assembling the musicboxes. To date none has been placed on the retail market here, all products having been shipped to larger chics, including Chicago. Similar boxes were at one time made liy the Wayne Novelty company, before that firm started making war materials. ————-o POPE PIUS ASKS tCooUauud From rag* a> iini left our air force no alternative. John Tyndall, 81, Licensed Engineer Local Man Granted License By State At 81, after having done surveying work for 59 yeans. John W. Tyndall, of this city, holis a professional engineer's license for the first time. Mr. Tyndall was graduated from Valparaiso university In 1884 and started working in the county surveyor's office two years later, He majored in teaching during his first years at the university and then returned to study engineering and surveying. In those days an engineer did not need a license to follow his profession and Mr. Tyndall went to work. For yeans he did engineering work and surveying at various intervals until about five or six years ago. Then a state law was passed which required all engineers to be licensed. Mr. Tyndall, busy with other affairs, "di*l not Iwither to make application for a licenne.” The war came along and began to drain on the county's professional engineer staff. Harley Ehraam and Walter H. GilUom. both of whom had served as county surveyor, donned service uniforms. Only Ralph E. Roop and Richard Tonnelier were left to handle all engineering work demanded In the county, and Mr. Roop took over the duties of civil engineer and water superintendent for tbe city of Decatur. Ho. Mr. Tyndall decided to make application for a license. He was to write a tln-sis on an engineering subject, which would prove his ability. He went to ludlanapolls to make further Inquiry and while there he submitted to an oral examination and a short written query. The tht-sis was not linccsvicar general, doe* not directly put the liurden on the Allies. He recalls his earlier pleas to all belligerents to spare thr Eternal city and her sacred buildings. And he appeal* to be speaking to all alike when he calls for "an efll<-a<'|ous recall to a sense of lofty coin preh > nslon of the sH<n*d destiny of Rome, no less than to humunity and to Christian charity."
