There are some time* and place* so saered that one is instinctively hushed into reverent devotion. When Christ prayed in holy intercession <a* recorded in John 17» on the night before Hi* suffering Hi* disciple* must have been lifted Into the very presence of the Eternal One It was a holy experience. He prayed for Himself, but even more did He pray for Hi* believing follower*. To know that »omeone 1* praying for u* is indeed an anchor in a time of storm. a strong help in the hour of conflict or of service for Chri»t. But to know that the Master prayed for you and me—that i* enough to send us, like the disciple* of old. out to face an unbelieving world in His conquering name. He prayed for Himself—and He prayed for me! I. He Prayed for Himself (vv. 1-8). He looked up and said: "Father." and then He was ready to pray. So close was He to God that there was just this simple recognition of their communion. In Christ are we not a* close a* He? What did Jesus ask for Himself? At first thought it seem* a htUe unusual that He asked I. For Recognition of His Divine Glory (vv. 1-3). Why would He who bad just given the disciples an example of and an admonition to humility desire to have His glory manifested'’ de sure it was not a matter of selflsh pride. He had finished His work (for He counted redemption as complete throughout His prayer), and now the glory which He laid down when He came to earth (Phi). 8:8-8) was to be resumed He want* man to see Him now not only as the compassionate Son of man. but the glorious Son of God. able to save. The Father bad given Christ the heart devotion of those who believed In Him. Note that their faith rested on the name of God (v. 6). and up oti His Word which had come to them and to us through Christ. He recognized their position and standing in Him and established it before God and man. Creamed comment* on the Sunday School lesson, “la the I'pper Room.' -John 13 12-20, 14:1-6 for Sunday. March 14th. Jesus was now giving the final touche* of his teaching ministry, emphasising humility as a cardinal virtue and faith as the supreme test of discipleship. v. 12. "So when he had washed their feet, and taken bis garments and sat down, he said unto them. Know ye what 1 have done?" There was in each of the disciple* too much pride, conceit, selfish ambition; .L sus would make the needed corrections in their live* by a concrete example. v. 13. "Ye call me. Teacher, and Lord and ye say well: for so am I.” Jesus condescending to wash feet as a servant would do does not repudiate his lordship; be is to be known as the world’s greatest teacher, too. v. 14. “If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another’s feet." He uow proceed* to induce flis discipltw to become like him in humility aud not to consider any need of a brother too lowly to be supplied, nor any person so low as to forfeit helpful interest in himself, no one of another color and race so despshd as to forbid the exercise of brotherly kindness. v. 15. “For I have given you an example, that ye should also do a* I have done unto you." Since he who was infinitely exalted above the rest of the group was willing to condescend to such a service, bis folowers should be willing likewise. v 18. "Verily, verily. I «ay unto you. a servant is not greater than his lord: neither one that Is sent greater than he that sent him." The slave may well stoop to the ffii es which his lord himself discharge* and count on no exemption* the lord does not claim.— Dod* Th. greatness of Christ and God arc co-equal. v. 17. "If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them." It is ea* yto talk about performing needed service fcr others and to recognize this as a Christian Ideal, but it to another matter to put their principle into practice. But practice is needed and not merely words v 18. "I speak not of you ail: I know whom I have chosen: but the scripture may be fulfilled. He that eateth my bread lifted up bis heel against me." Jesus proceed* to point out bi* traitor; he refers to a loose quotation of Psalm 41:9 which refers primarily to Abithophel's treachery against David during Absalom’s rebellion, but is here applied to Judas' treac.beiy against Christ. v. 20. "Verily, verily. I say unto you. He that receivetb whomsoever I send receivetb me; and be that receiveth me receivetb him that went me " Jesus would have God honored For Judas to betray Jr sue wag to dtoheuot God and here was the hurt of it aIL if Jesus’ disciples are truly received then is Christ received v. 1. "Let not your heart be troubled, believe m God. believe also in me ” God alone can deliver from all fear of which the greatest is death; but this takes Implicit uith in God and to his Sou v. 8.
