Whip Andrews, 37 To 34, In Final Battle After Downing Bluffton In Sensational Tilt

Bearkotz To Battle Fort Wayne Central In Semi-Final At Muncie Saturday The Monroe Bearkatz. fighting a brilliant uphill battle, copped the Huntington regional championship Saturday to become one of Indi* ana's select 16 high school basketball team* still in the running for the state s prize sports classic, the prep basketball championship. The Bearkatz, after winning a thrilling last seeoj I victory over the Bluffton Tigers in the first regional tilt Saturday afternoon, ovt r came a six-point deficit to trounce Andrew* In the championship encounter. 3* to 34. The victory was the first regional triumph ever chalked up for Monroe, although a strong band of Bearkatz captured a sectional tournament at Blufftm in 1921. then going directly to state tourney play before the regional setup was made. Monroe's next tourney play will be Saturday, when the Bearkatz will meet the strong Tigers from Central of Fort Wayne at 1:30 o'clock Saturday atterno n in the opening game of the Muncie semifinal tournament. Came From Behind The Bearkatz showed great courage In their regional triumph, handing the Andrews Cardinal* a three-point setflkck after trailing 24 to IS at the half. The Andrews team had been undefeated throughout the entire season, capping a great record by costing the Huntington Vikings in the finals of the Huntington sectional. The Andrews quintet started fast in the final contest, piling up a 14 to 6 margin in the first quarter. The Bearkatz rallied In the second period and pulled within two points at 20 to 18 hut Andrews added two field goals to build up their 24 to 1 16 half-time advantage. Mcnroe came back with a bang In the third quarter, tallying 16 points to seven by Andrews to give the Adams county sectional winners a 3" to 31 leal, the first time the Bearkatz enjoyed the frontrunning position. Crist paced the Bearkatz In thin scoring surge with nine points. Holding this slight lead, the Bear katz slowed down play throughout the final eight minutes, meanwhile seofing five points while holding the Cardinals to three to salt down their 37 to 34 triumph and the regional championship. The Buckeyes took first place In the swimming events and Michigan . arm- off with the track title. Michigan finished second with 61 points and Minnesota placed third with only 14. In the track events. Michigan rolled up 53 and a half points, the highest total in history. Wisconsin was runner-up with 37 and a half points, while third place went to Illinois with 34 and one-fifth. Officials described the times set in vsrious events as mediocre. Then, in the final battle Saturday night against an Andrews team which had swept through all season and tournament competition without a loss. Indiana's only undefeated high school quintet, the Bearkatz were down eight points al the half time rest period. Our Adams county lads fought right back, however, and went into the lead as the third quarter closed.
