Creamed Comments On The Sunday School Lesson
Judah, An Example of Self Sacrifice, Geneaia 44:18-34 for Sunday. September 20. Since the last lesson the character of the sons of Jacob were being tested, and the cleansing process to eliminate the family trait of trickery was evidently God's program The lesson for today is a bit of that history and has to do with the second visit of Joseph's brethren for food because of the gnat drought. Simeon was held as a hostage after the first visit, and now Benjamin is about to be held prisoner. Judah, the oldest son of the family, pleads Benjamin's case v. 18. "Then Judah cam< near unto him, and said. Oh my laird, let thy servant. I pray thee, speak a word In my lord's ear. and let i not thine anger burff agalst thy ■ servant; for thou art even as Pharoah.’’ Joseph's dream of the sheaves bowing is now coming true, for Joseph is addressed as Ixird. Pride must be eliminated In God’s children. v. 19. 20. “My lord asked his servants, saying. Have ye a father or brother? And we said unto my lord. We have a father, an old ! man, and a child of his old age. ’ a little one; and his brother is* dead, and he alone la left of his mother, and his father loveth him.” Judah rehears a former conversation with Joseph and tells a bit of the family history. Character demands respect for parents. v. 20. “And thou saldst to thy servants. Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.” The family tie Is strong in good children. Our greatest testings come In the home life. v. 22. “And we said uuto my lord, The lad can not leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would di-." Judging from the shock which Jacob experienced when told of Joseph's possible death. It was not likely that he could stand another one like It. There Is a limit to human endurance, especially in old age. It h here that children will shield their parents. V. 23. “And thou saldst unto thy servants. Except your youngest broth-r come down with you. ye shall see my face no more.” This Is the testing place without the lordship of Joseph needed food w<"ild not he forthcoming. v. 25. “And our father said. Go again, and buy us a little food.” The situation wax desperate. One will make any sacrifice for food for the IxHly. a suggestion of sacrifice that ought to be made for spiritual food. e v. 21. “And we said. We cannot go down; If our youngest brother be with us. then will we go down; for we may not see the man's face except your youngest brotht r be with you." This wax a distressing requirement. They recognized It as a judgment of God upon fnem for their treatment of Joseph vs. 27. 2*. 29. "And thy servant my father said unto us. Ye know that my wife bear me two sons; and the one went out from me. and 1 said. Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since; and if ye take this ako from me, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.” The trick the sons played on the father in the disposition of Joseph work ed a great hardship to Jacob who in his day also played tricks. God wax taking trickery out of the family blood. vw 30, 31. “Now then fore when I come to thy servant my father and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life Is hound up in his] lad's life; It shall come to pas- : CHURCH PAGE SPONSORS THE FIRST STATE BANK General Banking HOLTHOUSE DRUG CO. when h<- seeth the lad is not with us, that he will die; and thy servant* will bring down gray hairs of thy servant our father with xorrow to the grave." Here Is a great appeal; It Is irrestible; In the unexpressed consciousness of Joseph the sorrow of his beloved father breaks his heart. v. 32. “For thy servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying. If I bring him not unto thee, then shall 1 bear the blame to my father forever.” Judah, in desperation, does his utmost to meet the responsibility he had assumed. A true child of God must live at his bent ail the time. v. 33. “Now therefore. I pray thee, let thy servant abide In sight of the lad a bondman to my lord; ! and let the lad go up with bls brethren.” Judah.* having been cleansed of selfishness and trl< k-ry. furnished a link In the lineage of Christ. o >usrl £Uis| The Supri m- Court upholds the right of the municipality to require licenses for all distributors of books and pamphlets.
