Edward B. How O*Hare shot down five Jnp planes in four mintttes his guilunl action. As Told by Himself
I'l he young naval air arc who, in his single-sealer lighter plane far out over the Pacific, saved hi* aircraft carrier from serious damage, told this story of his exploit: "I was alone against nine Jap bombers. They were flying fast -nd straight for the carrier which they had apparently Iwen ordered to get at all costs. I got above them and prepared for the first group to pass. Quickly I dropped, pr<*ss4*d the trigger and I saw two of them get hit and drop out. They burst into flames and fell. **These bombers were coming in formations of three. On the first pass I hit planes on the right after end. Then I went over the left side ami startl'd up the line. In this way I shot down five and damagisl one or two of the nine bombers. My whole action took only three or four minutes. They tell me there were sometimes three falling plant's in the air al once. By nighttime we had shot down 18 of 20 Jap plant's seen that day. "From what I have seen of the Japanese. I’d say that if we can meet them on anything like even terms, we can beat them.
