Veronica tJtne. i remetnoer mouter used to say I whirled my mana like a young mare.” At 12. says Ginger, she already had started to love dancing. Two years later, in fact, she won tha Charleston contest that started her on the way to fame. The dance scene of the week is out at Warners where Joan Leslie and Jack Carson are rehearsing a comy Spanish routine for their new picture, "The Hard Way.” They are supposed to tie a pair of small-time vaudevilians. in his tight-fit ting costume. Carson looks as If he weighs about two pounds leas than a ton. Every time he stamps, the floor shakes. •The only way I'll ever photograph that,” says Cameraman James Wong Howe, "is to float the cam* era." When Dance Director I-eroy Prins allows a breathing spell between rehearsals, Joan Leslie tells me about working in night clubs with her two sisters before she crashed the movies. The girls were 9. 13 and IS and had to be careful in states where there were laws against children performing. Joan tap-danced, sang, acted as master-of-ceremonies. played the accordion and did impersonations of movie stars. Her specialty was Katharine Hepburn. Joan is very thrilled over becoming a movie star herself. Also over her 29 chances in the new picture and over having Jack Carson die for love of her in the story. "Did you ever die id a picture before?” I ask Jack. "Well.” he replies, "not intentionally.” One of Somerset Maugham’s great stories. ’The Moon and Sixpence," Is being brought to the screen at the R-K-O-Patha atudlo in Culver City. This week I watch Director At Lewyn shoot a scene in which Herbert Marshall. Steve Geray and Doris Dudley talk about the eccentricities of the artist-hero played by George Sanders. It la generally agreed that Maugham modeled his hero after Paul Gauguin, but the movie can’t say so for fear of being sued by one of Gauguin’s heirs. The movie faces other restrictions. too. The audience, in some wey, must be told that Sanders will pay for his unconventional life. And thats where Herbert Marshall comes In. He’s a sort of a narrator as well as a character in the story. You don’t see Sanders getting his just deserts but Marshall assures you that he will. This is the device that got the picture by the Hays ofllce. __
