I BROADWAY NIGHTS By AXEL STORM ' DtootteM Ur Mtae ernrarv*. la*
NEW YORK - Mr* Lesley Storm has attempted to put on paper, and Incidentally onto the stage, the story of the only theatre In London to keep going through the blitz. If* what Broadway know* a* a grind house. In London it’s called a breezy non atop revue. It has, this play by Mrs. Storm (no relation to your correspondent) everything In it that the Windmill Dicatre had, except its vitality and the immediacy of the theatre. "Heart of a City" never quite seems to come to life. Backstage i It telfo. collectively and ad seriatim, the stories of the various ' boys and girls working there. There's love interest In the usual triangular version - boy loves girl, girl loves other boy, other girl loves Boy No. 1. There's something final and definite about a bomb. It's a dreadful and horrible iratrument of war-of a savage and un-
I principled war when the bomb la i I launched on civilian!. For that < ' reason it ought not to be permitted as a device to solve a problem in dramaturgy. The leading lady isn’t quite in love < 1 with the near-sighted lad who drinks whisky and writes hit i tongs. She Is definitely and devastatingly in love with a flying officer she meets at a service club where the company gives a show. The tough little trouper is nuts about the song writer. So when the flying officer comes to London to claim the soubrette. the song-writing lad goes to a pub on the corner to drown his disap ( pointment The pub suffers a direct hit, but only after the i tough little trouper goes there to haul the songwriting lad into the safety of the theatre's bomb shelter The hit on the pub solves Mrs. Storm’s most vexing theatrical problem. She couldn't decently send the boy and the tough little trouper into each other's arms, but having a bomb scatter them to kingdom come does it handily. Well, pip pip and cheerio, old bean! "Heart of a City” isn’t nearly as tough as "The Wookey," and not one-tenth as over-written. The elaborate kidding about the blitz I isn't too obstreperous, and the
I owner* will purchase their 1!>42 flk-eos* plat** al the same price* ' tliey have paid In the pn*'. In a double-barreled opinion handed down yesterday, th- high court also upheld the 1941 legislature'* repeal of the 197.7 tiroweight tax law. thus depriving th* Mate highway department of some |1.250.0<h) revenue and at 'hr sum* time lifting a tax burden from j truck-owners, who benefited both way* by the supreme court tilling. heroic understatement isn't too troublesome. Our main objection to "Heart of a CltY’ is that It Isn't quite a play. The audience* like It because it's touching and gay in apota, and generally speaking, quite decent In the handling of a rather draggled subject. So we hope that It stays on at Henry Miller’s Theatre. The least that can be said for It is that It offers employment to thirty acton and actresses. And Judging from the theatrtesl fare we've had ao far thia year, they might have done a great deal worse. It’s quite a hit in London, we understand, and quite understandably so. The pathos of distance somewhat robe it of it* effectiveneaa on unblitzed Broadway. The other night we went to the Metropolitan Opera for a per formance of Carmen, and well wager that that fine old war
hone of Monsieur Bizet never in all its life got such a going-over as It had at the hands of M. Jan Kiepura and Mlle. Lily Djanel. M. Kiepura couldn't by any stretch of the imagination be called an adequate Don Jose, and the crash you heard in the third act was Caruso turning over in his grave when the Polish thrush went to work on the Flower Song. Mr Brownlee was an acceptable Escamillo, but by and large any road company could have offered a better Carmen than the lavish Met gave. We’re sorry, because we have a soft spot for the opera and saw It for the first time in some years. Maybe ft was because Sir Thomas Beecham had pepped his two performances of Carmen up and the old Met decided to let things slide back to normal. Well, someone once said that even Homer nodded. We've seen a superb "Don Giovanni” and a wonderful "Marriage of Figaro" this year, with Bruno Walter making the orchestra tump through a perfect musical hoop. And young Mr. Lelnsdorf got good music out of his minions in the one "Lohengrin" and at least one "Rosenkavaller" we heaed. That ought to be enough to satisfy the most exacting opengoer which, we assure you, we aren't
