START KIDNAP PROBE MONDAV Mercer County Grand Jury To Probe Celina Kidnaping The Mercer county grand jury at Celina Ohio. Monday la expected to prolw Into the alleged kidnaping of a Celina couple early In August by Mwrencr Ktoker. who also confessed the kidnaping of a couple In this city. Htoker. 27. was arrested In Columbtis. Ohio on August 5. He admitted to authorities, Including those from Adams and Wells counties, to the kldnnplngs in both Mercer county and here. Shortly after that he was hound over to the Mercer grand jury a.id has been held In Jail at Celina since the time of hla arrest Htoker confessed to kidnaping Harold Jones of Bluffton and a girl companion, whose Identity was not revealed, during the street fair here. He admitted shooting at Jones. It Is unlikely that Htoker will be brought here to face charges, since Mercer county Is expected to press charges there. Stoker's brother. Emanuel. 21. who was allegedly with him In a number of thefts, was also arrested the same day He was not Implicated In the De <iatur crime, however. Stoker faces the possibility of a life sentence, should he lie convicted of kidnaping. Newspaper lloyn, “Little Merchants" Are Honored Throughout Nation Today iiilHOJ ... ■
Today In Decatur and all over the nation tribute Is being paid to "the little merchants" In observance of National Newspaper Boy day. There are more than 20 of these lads who each weekday deliver the copies of the Dally Democrat to the homes and business houses of the city. Os this number. 15 are actually the "little merchants.” They contract with the Dacatur Dally Democrat to purchase the copies of the paper. They re-sc-ll the papers to the subscribers. Tb-y are actually what the term little merchant implies. It is their task to give satisfactory delivery service in all kind* of weather. It Is up to them to make their collections promptly and accurately, for they are the loser in event of krror or failure to collect. It 1s this early training that first gives them a taste of the business life to follow. Little wonder it has often been said that "the little merchants of today are th<business men of tomorrow." In addition to these IS youths, there are about a similar number who have been engaged by the newspaperboys as "helpers.” They are empAoyiW and pacd by the carriers under contract. They are entirely responsible- In their work to the carriers who employ them Keith (Mlpeii has the number one route out of the Dully Democrat. Keith, who Is 16 years old and a sophomore at Decatur jun-ior-senior high school, carries the Homewood route and delivers papers to residents in that vicinity. His younger brother, Max, Is his helper. Ric hard "Dick" DeeJ- an is carrier on route two. His I* the downtown route and Dick delivers most of the business house papers. Dick is IS years old and a senior at Decatur Catholic high. He is the son of Mrs. Florence In-sjean and came to this city from Indianapolis about 15 months ago. He started carrying the Daily Democrat soon after moving here. Hie helper la Bugeus Braun, son of Mrs. Margaret Braun of Heventh street. Yell leading seems contagious on his route, lacst year Dick was one of the yell leaders at Decatur Catholic high and Eugene was a yell leader for the St. Joseph grade school. Wayne Fisher carries route three paper* In the west end. Wayne is 15 years old. the son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Fisher. Wayne, who has had about two y--ar* paper passing experience, "inherited" the paper from brother Bill, a former carrier. He is a freshman at DHS, Wayne has as his tn lpc-r. Bill Halley, son of Andrew Bailey in carrying one of the west end routes. Wayne playa football in the rest of hi* spare time after school and work.
One of the veteran carriers is John Holthouse, Jr., better known as “Brild.” Brud. the son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Holthouse ot Jackson atret. worked for yesr* as a helper to Robert Bocb. former carrier. He carries most of North Third. Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh streets. Besides bis school snd newspaper work, Brud Is an accomplished athlete. He ha* played three years on the Decatur Commodore team at the Catholic high school, where he Is a senior. Brud's helper Is Eugene Bassett, 14. son of Carol Bassett and a sophomore at Decatur junior-sett-lor high. Brud has number four route. On number five route is Laverne Roth.
