SYNOPSIS Aboard a ferry, enroute to visit I his fiancee. Jane Rider, David Far- < land prevents an attractive young woman from jumping overboard. I The hysterical girl entrusts him i with an envelope, requesting that i he deliver it to the socially promi- < nent Richard Garrison, if she does not call for it within a week. No- i ticing a couple watching them, the girl's eyes dilate with fear. “I knew he wouldn't play fair!** she eadaims and dashes away, dropping a compact initialed "C. 8. and a pamphlet entitled "Americans. Warning!” On the train. < David discovers the envelope is missing from hie pocket. At her home in Haverstraw, as Jane prepares to meet David, her thoughts go to Kurt Helm, the writer, who rented the old log cabin nearby- At first he had been fascinating, but last night he had changed shockingly. "I shouldn't have come to thia place,” Kurt said. "Lean people living on fat lands, thinking of nothing while the world blows up around them.” Then he went on to chreaten to take Jane away from David. At the station, David sees the mysterious woman again. He asks Jane to follow her tail, but they lose eight of it. Running out of gas, they walk to a nearby garage where they encounter Mat Breanu, Broadway big chot. and hie friend, Fan Rubley. David accidentally pulls the mysterioue lady's compact from hie pocket. Breanu snaps it up. "How did you get this?” he growls. The stubborn Dsvid refuses to tell. Breanu returns the compact to David with, “Give me or Dick Garrison a ring, Monday.” Garrison! That was the man the girl on the boat requested him to contact. As Mat Breanu and Fan Rubley take their leave, the latter whispers to Dsvid, “If you get into any trouble lock me up. Mat’s upset.” CHAPTER FIVE David exclaimed under his : breath: “Confound it, I've forgotten cigarettes! Can't we stop some* Where?” “It’s long after seven," Jane said. “And we're off the main road.” Then she remembered old Macklin's store, opposite the one-track railroad, near Route 202. “Angel!” David murmured. She drove in and out of small roads, tenderly conscious of David’s head on her shoulder. He was worn out, poor darling! But the temper of the night had got her. She had never minded going anywhere alone in this country. Now, whenever can : shot by, her pulse jumped. "You’re an idiot!" Jane scolded herself, pointing the little car, at last, into a turn-around space that seemed to yawn between a dreary little station at one end, and the pale windows of Macklin's store at the other. Elms were posted around the circle. Their dark leaves thickened over the smaller sprouts that fringed the station. The empty platform bordered hardly discernible rails. It was a dreary spot Jane wished she had gone on to town. The air was chilly. David flung his eoat around her. "11l get the cigarettes, hon. You trait here.” But Jane wouldn’t wait alone. She rounded the desolate circle and parked under the overhanging branches near the railroad tracks. Several narrow roads converged into the circle. Was that another car? No, it was a blotch across the way. “I'm coming with you," she said firmly and followed David, his coat hooked over her shoulders, trailing I below her short skirt. .

Many a time she had gwne eat of her way to bring old Macklin some of her ni.Aher’a famous vegetable soup. He had had arthritis since his wife died. Tonight, she couldn’t see his lean gnarled figure at all, as she entered with David. The smell of cheap candy hung in the close air. There were two people in the store. She wa» sure they were the couple who had passed her in the railroad station. You couldn't mistake the man's stiff military ahoul<ler*. or his companion's evertrimmed hat and her drab coat They stood aside, near the shelves of canned v.-g.-tablea. David marched to the counter,

The man whispered to the woman, and they started for the door. “I got vour eheeee and eracken ready, Mister," Macklin quavered, brandishing a paper bag. David was half serosa the store. “Come back here," he shouted. "David—” Jane eallod. No use. The man’s hand was on the door, the woman at his heels. "Stay out of this, y.>un« fellow, and you won't get hurt I” he snarled. “So you remember mo? Where’s that envelope you took out of my pocket?
