cneapty. ”1 have to exaggerate in the pie. ture. The studio had to make thia (own up specially." Over on "The Gentle People" set, I watch John Garfield make love to Ida Lupino. His intentions are lees honorable than Robinsons. He and Ida are standing on the end of a pier. Fog hangs over the water, shrouding a half dozen an> shored boats. Garfield Is trying to get Ida to go on a trip with him. "I don’t know if X love you," she objects. "Its a five-day voyage to Havana. You'll have plenty of time to find out,' he argues cynically. They do the scene a couple of times before Director Anatole Litvak is satisfied. Then, while James Wong Howe is squinting through the camera to check up on the fog effect, Ida and John come over to talk to me. They kM about their earthy love scene. •'ln this picture" says Garfield, grinning, "I’m the Jean Gabin of Brooklyn." ’ •‘Sure.’’ says Ida, "and I’m the Danielle Durrieux of Sheepahead Bay." At Paramount, on another morning. I watch Paulette Goddard and Charles Boyer enact a dramatic scene for “Hold Back the Dawn." They are in a drab room of a Mexican border hotel. Paulette Is sitting on the sway-backed bed. Boyer is standing at the window, looking gloomily out. "If you hate me so much, why don’t you say so!" exclaims Paulette suddenly. She gets up and confronts Boyer at the window. “Go on, hit me,” she urges. “I had much rather." Boyer merely gives her a long look and walks out of the room. I try to remember if this actor has ever hit a woman on the screen. When Director Mitchel*. Leisen okays tlie scene, I ask Boyer. "Yes," he replies. “When I made •Uliom’ in France. It was terriblel She was a fragile girl and we had to take the scene over and over. I begged her to hit me back wheg the scene was ovar. But she would not.” Boyer is luckier than some so tors. He doesn’t have to hit women on the screen. The scenario writers realize that he can punish them enough with his eyes.
