las for the first time how difficult it must be for actresses who don I photograph well from certain angles “I don't see how they do It," She confesses. “You have no freedom of movement." Joan isn't being catty. As any cameraman will tell you. she is one of the few feminine stars who Is completely photogenic. That may be one reason why she to willing to deface her beauty for this picture. Over at Warner Brothers, I watch Bette Davis. James Cagney, a burro and a rooster enact a scene for "The Bride Came C. O. D." Bette and Jimmy, two of Hollywood's outstanding performers, must yield the spotlight in this case to their furred and feathered co-workers. The shot Is one where the hero and heroine, after making a forced landing m a plane, wander into a deserted hotel in a ghost town. Location scenes for the picture were made at Death Valley. The company to just back on the lot. Everybody to kidding Bette and Jimmy about having to play stooges for a burro and a rooster. When Director Rill Keighley wants to rehearse the two players first without their barnyard rivals, he says: "Let’s just run through the scene this time without the stars." In the actual take, the Idea to for the burro to make a startled ■lash through the lobby when Bette and Jimmy call out to see if anybody to in the place. Then the rooster, sitting upon a piece of furniture, to supposed to start crowing. The burro does his stuff the first time but the rooster won't crow. Bette and Jimmy repeat their walk through the lobby. Still the rooster won't crow. Its trainer. Curly Twiford. stands in front of the bird and flaps his arms encouragingly. The camera assistant makes a noise like a hen ducking. This proves to be an Inspiration. The rooster perks up. Bette and Jimmy hurtedly go into action Sure enough, the rooster crows on schedule Everybody relaxes. “Well,” says Jimmy. "I'm glad that's over. I was afraid it was going to tarn into a career."
