I"TRIAL WITHOUT JURY" By JAMBS RONALD
CIIAkTSK TWKNTV.SIX A wave of jubilation swept Sergeant Feathers. Thia was hia first big chance and thing* war* ahaping well fur him. If it ahould turn out that Simon Osborne wcr* guilty, there would certainly be promotion ia (tore for the clever officer who unmarked him. ••You're *ur* of that? He couldn't have returned without you knowing it?" "Not a chance, young feller.” "He might have been in New York and not come horn*." "Not him. Where would he get the money to aleep anywhere t ire for two nighta? He’a always broke. Take it from me, Monday morning waa when he came home. I stepped out for a drink at eleven and ran into him." "Your name, please *" said Feathers, producing a notebook. "Cissy GlotL" “You’ll hear mor* of this later, Ifiaa Glott." "Mr*. Glott,” she corrected him sharply, and added: "You keep after him, young feller, he's the man you want.” "You sound as though you'd be gtad if he were hung.” "1 wouldn't «hcd no tears, you ean bet your life on that The fuss ha makes if I take a drop of whisky for my rheumatism! Simon Osborne is one mean one. you ean be sura! You can hang him and welcome!” "Have you any idea when he’ll be home?” "He’ll be home when the bar* close, if he can walk. Goo' night!" Sergeant Feather* walked away, determined to return later and interview Simon Osborne even if it meant missing his last train home, but when he rounded the corner into the neit street he heard someone shouting: “Mr. Otbomt! Hi! 1 want a word witK pou/” Stopping short. Feather* turned and saw a hatless man run out of a cigar store and hurry after a mid-dle-aged individual who was heading straight for a bar on the neasast corner. Th* middle-aged individual waa apparently oblivious to the shouts, for he went on with a nonchalant air. When the man from the cigar etore caught up with him and grabbed hie arm, ha looked round with a start and a broad amile creased hie face. "My dear fellow! This is a pleasant surprise. I’ve been meaning for days to drop in on you. How are you? And your wife? Don’t tell me she's still got that old bronchial WooMe?* "Look here, Mr. Osborne!” said the esasperated storekeeper, “I want my money. It's over a year—" "My dear fellow," replied Simon aoothingly, “I'm terribly sorry. In strict confidence, as one of my old and valued friends, I’ll toil you the candid truth—" “You've been telling me the candid truth for twelve months and I still haven't got my money. 1 don't want any more of your stalling. Do 1 get my money or don’t 1?” "You embarrass me," said Simon, shutting his eyes as though in pain. "Never mind that. Do I—" "111 be frank with you," said Simon. "It's like this—" The rest escaped Feathers, for Simon lowered hut voice U> a ceafiduatial whisper. The storekeeper

reluctantly retraced his su ps—havirfit obtained no satisfaction - and his shameless debtor, with a bland and princely air, continued in the direcUon of the bar. Sergeant Feather* touched hi* shoulder a* he reached out to open the door. “Mr. Simon O*borne?" Before replying, Simon eyed him from head to foot. Not to be outdone, Feather* returned the appraising glance. Simon frowned. “You don't look like a process server,” he said. “I'm net. I’m a police sergeant." "Some of my best friends are cop*,” said bimon cordially, shaking hi* hand warmly. "Charmed to meet you. I am *Uut to drop into Rooney's for just a *nlfter. Won't you join m*r Sergeant Feather* i.eeitatod. H* was an abstemious young man, almost a teetotaller, and he Knew that it was not ethical for an officer to drink with a man he might later arrest On th* other hand, was it not likely that in the disarmingiy cosy atmosphere of Rooney'* Tavern, and under th* influence of drink, Simon Osborne might let slip some vital information which at a more btuineaa-like interview he would not dream of divulging? "Thank*,” he said, "don't mind if Ido." They passed through th* door of Rooney's together. "Scotch for me," ordered Simon jovially. "What’ll you have?" A good start, thought Sergeant Feather*. He knew what Scotch could do. Under the influence of only two Scotches at a New Year’* party some year* before, he had kissed all the girls, insulted all the men, and insisted on telling his life story to everyone, whether they wanted to hear it or not. The more Scotches Simon Osborne drank, the better for a certain bright young officer's promotion! "What'll you have?" repeated Simon. “Whisky? No? Then why not try a ’stinger'?” “A ’stinger'?” snid Feathers doubtfully. "What’s that? Never heard of it." “Oh, it'e a sort of cocktail. Very pleasant, they tell me. Never touch it myself. Too mild for me." A sort of cocktail. ... It Bounded harmlesa enough. Women drank eocktaila Yea, Feather* decided, a 'stinger' would suit him admnebly. He would spin it out. make it last a long time. He would need a clear head to steer Simon Osborne'* unguarded tongue in the right direction when it had been lubricated by several Scotches. While the bartend** was pouring the drinks. Feathers took stock of his surroundings. They were in a small tavern that radiated solid, oldfashioned comfort. Th* bartender had a rosy, round face and away with bottlea that waa enchanting to watch. “I’ve had a few word* with your housekeeper," Feather* remarked casually, watching Simon’s face out of the comer of his eye. "Hav* you, indeed?” said Simon eouably. "Drunken old sloven,” he added, draining his drink at a gulp. "Two more, Mike,” he said to the bartender. "You don’t want to pay any attention to whnt ske says, young man. I never do. It’s been my experience that you never get the truth nut of habitual drunkards. It’s a wonder the woman ean speak

Knowing Simon, tae bartender had filled th* eMerly man's glass a* soon a* it wa* emptied and each time he had shaken a ’stinger' for Sergeant Feather*. With the benevolent eye* of Simon upon him. Lucky 1 didn’t put my shirt on that nag in the fifth like you told me, or I'd be walking ’round tn n barrel tonight!" They crowded the far end of the bar and Simon turned toward them, exchanging backeha’ amiably. Feathers felt out of it. He took another sip—a long one - from hia second glass and tugged Simon’* sleeve. Simon turned hte head. “Yes, my boy?" "Er . . . what’ll you have?" Feather* thundered. The flow <>f banter ceased and all the face* at the end of the bar turned in the stranger's direcUon. Feather* felt diseoncertod by this joint scrutiny, but the face* rslaxed in smiles, and one or two of them thanked him warmly. He did not understand fer what they were thanking him until the bartender arrayed half-a-doran foaming glasses and a double Scotch in a line and, | looking pleasantly at Feather*, said that would be a dollar and ten cents. A little daxed by thi* general acceptance of hi* loud invitation to Simon, he paid and relapsed into alienee. "Moocher*!” said a doleful voice in hi* ear. “Born moochcrs, all of ’em." Feather* looked round and saw a lugubrious little man ia a dusty derby hat standing at hi* elbow. He had come in a split second to* late to avail himself of the Sergeaat'e unintentional hospitality. "Free drinks, that's all they think of," said the newcomer sadly. "You ean hardly take a deep breath without half of 'em saying: Thanks, I don't mind if I do.' Cadgers, that'* what they are. I’m not like that, thank heaven," he said, hi* gloomy eye* fixed steadily on Feather's face. T believe in waiting till I'm naked." They looked into each other'* eye*. There was a long silence, "What'* your*?” asked Feather* weakly. "Well, now, that’* very kind of you.
