post headquarter* were transferred February 1. 1927 to th* second floor of the Graham building, The American Legion occupied this hall until March. 193 d. with the exception of a few months In 1933 when they rented the Decatur Country club. A building committee was appointed In March 1929. but following their Investigation reported that It was Impossible for the organisation to build. The desire for a permanent home continued to smoulder until 1933 when another building cmmlttee was appointed. Several plans were suggested. Including the construction of a log cabin, but the Idea was dismissed a* being impracticable. In the meantime the Decatur Country club had been leased with an option to purchase If the venture proved satisfactory. The Legion tenanted the club from May IMS to December 1933. abandonIng their plans to acquire the site because of the financial situation Again In 193* possible building site* were Investigated and discussons regarding a new home conducted. The purchase of the old Natlonsl hotel resulted when the members proceeding cautiously, deemed It best not to Incur the debt of constructing a new home. It took a great amount of effort to complete the organisation. Comrade Colchln resigned the chairmanship and Joseph L. Mct'onnell was elected temporary chairman. Colchln was named secretary. Joseph C. Laurent, Italia* Brown and Martin J. Smith were appointed to draft the constitution and bylaws and present them at tbe next meeting. Fred M. Elxey, James K. Staley and Fred McConnell were named to the puffllcity committee. The First Commander Following tbe approval of the constitution and by-laws at ibe next meeting on November 3, tbe association elected its first officers. Tbe men elected were Elmo Smith.
