Don't truet me too far.” "I won’t," .he promiwd. Ito Judith won her point Three day. later ahe found a little apdrt ment off Waahingtoa Square It waa an inexpeaten walk-up, four ff ighu. But it was elea4 cloee to the subway, and furnished after a fashion. Just brfon Labor Day, Judith invited Michael to be her first dinner guest. Togithor they elimbed the four flights of stairs, Michael carrying the big steak Judith had ord> nd. and a bottle of trine. Michael's tall frame seemed to fill the tiny room. Thu kitchen was an eleetrie plate Ivhind a screen. The day bed was Judith's couch at night But wonder of wonders, the apartment had a fireplace! "Now, isn't it sweet?" ahe demanded. There were geraniums in the window, and Michael's gift radio ia t he book case. Together they set the small table. Judith cooked the steak, made a salad. The candles on the table caught the facets in Judith's lovely ring Dudley stopped her, eaught her in bis arms and kissed her. Each day Judith fait more sure of herself. She tried again tonight to make Michael understand with, "I e«t eouldnt marry before a year, ichaei. I know that may sound prudish and absurd. But I couldn't. You see. I detest diverts.” Michael frowned. "Bo do It But when it occurs to an innocent party, it shouldn't be allowed to spoil lives. Notour Mvoat" "I wont spoil them, Michael." Judith looked forward to the Labor Day holiday with dread. Tex and Sonia wore flying a ersaa-coun-try race, and Ten had a special ship for the Thompson eiassie. Early in the week. Mrs. Van Mathes invited Judith and Michael for the week end. Although Judith did not know it, Dudley was responsible for that. He'd said something to Diek Van Ma than. If Judith could have gone to .leep on Saturday night, awakened on Tuesday morning, the would have been deeply thankful. Her holiday memories were painful Cleveland seemed to represent everything I which had happened to her since last year. A yearl Sometimes she ' couldn't believe it But it was so. Michael called for her Saturday ' night when the shop dosed. De Franc insisted she taka along a new fall dinner dress of black. And > she had a handsome new bathiag I suit from Parte, one of De Pram's i alluring Imports. When they arrived at the country > club. Judith waa in excellent spirits. At supper she sat between Michael i Dudley and Werner Griffith, a young • artist. Talk turned to Diek tn (levo- ’ land. Ma new ship, and finally, the Cleveland Eaces and Tex Ahnes. Dudley made an effort to change the subject, but one of the men knew Sonia and held forth on her beauty. ’ “Can you imagine flying with your wife? The only time I ever fight with mine la when ahe's driving the ear. Peraonally I wouldn't want aay i woman to be pushing me around the sky. even a Sonial" There waa general laughter. "That marriage ean’t last!” The man was persistent Then somebody i added, "Career and money difference usually spoil spiH-ups. Sonia > is a spender. Tex may not be tight but-I hear they're having real serious trouble already." Per the first time fear took poosession vt Michael Dudley. The bit 1 «t casuai gossip concerning a nft ' between Tex and Sonia had hit both Michasi and Judith hard. Michael tried to face the situation. If Sonia and Tex broke up, what? Saturday morning, Judith and MirhaH were at the pool, for it was a perfect early September day. Dudley watched Judith covertly; she tried to be gay and casual. In the afternoon Judith took a nap. Dudley went for a long walk. They joined meh other at tte peel for a final swim before tea time and Mrs Van Mathas wea there. She broke tbs news that "Bonia and Tex Atmes won the creas-country air race They were both en the radio jest a little white ago." “G<md!" said Dudley and he meant IL Success might keep those two together. Failure would separate them be was sure. Judith Mt the color rise to her cheeks as DuMey's eyes rested on her face. She was giad that Tex and t Sonia had made it. But Monday’s race might be a different story for Tex... o a o o Monday brought torture to Judith. In the late afternoon when the Thompson Trophy race was to be bmadrs-t. she excused herveif, said she bad a headache, wemt up to her room. She knew Dudley understood, and that made it harder. She had to listen to the broadcast but she could sot do tt with him beetde her, watching. Alone ia her room, she bolted the door, turned on the radio beside her bed She could hear the music of the band which played before the grandstand, the shouts of the crowds, the announcer's voice: "Greatest aviation classic in the world—mere than a hundred thousand people here to watch these true speed marvels,” etc, etc. Shv could see them nestling, ready for flight on the green airport. Tex's ship was the red bird. "Greatest civilian flier in the country,” they called him. There was the sound of a gun. They wore off! Judith was numb. Memories crowded so swift. Poor Elate! Ju- | dith had not thought of her ia weeks. . . . Tex was ahead on the first turn, going strong. Ho scented certain to win. On the second turn the announcer's voice rose sharply, raught Judith's attention. "Something is wrong with Aimes's CeMp. It's spouting smoko! Hek ling up! Mbe’s high new, turnto got in. Therels a etead of vapor trailing the skip no it eetttee." Judith was on her knees close to the radio, as the voice followed Tex's downward course: “Hek landing hot. The smoke's rolling." | Thon, as the wheels touched the , ground: “There’s a spurt of flame. ; She's on firel* Judith did not move. She could not even hear. "The ship's rolling. He's jumping out!" Even the microphone eaught the loud report as TVn'a hope wont up in flames. "Aimes' shirt sleeve is on fire. He's beating K ota.” There was a shriek of firs sirens! "Aimes has fallen down. He's rolling away from the flames. He's op . . . apparently OK.” Judith could hear no mere. She turned nd! the radio abruptly. For a tang time she sat there dated. At last Judith got up wearily. It was time to dross for dinner. She cold-creamed her eye lids carefully, put on make-up to hide her pallor. There must not be a shadow en her face which showed she had been crying bitter tears over... Ter! Judith was radiant as she earns down the stairs. Dudley met her in the hall, scrutinised her face. Ska smiled at hhn. -You’re an rlght?" “I had a grand nap, I fool wonderful. Headache’s all gone.” Dudley watching, believed her. A groat weight rolled off hie heart. He oaid: "Tex had Mino bad ?wSk in the Thompeoa. Hie ship eaugM fire, but he's OK.” Judith's manner was perfect "Oh, l‘m sorry! How dieappoteted he and Sonia wiU bet Let's aoM them a wire."
