SYNOPSIS Just before th* national air race* I startsd. Judith Aimes In the stand reviled herself for having quarreled i with her busband. Judith overhears three girls chattering about Sonia and Teg: “Sonny bad a date with him last night and h*‘* coming to her party tonight. He's erase about her. but then everybody to." Judith stiflened. So that was what had been wrong with Lee. The shout. "THEY'RE OFF!" brought Judith’s mind back to the rac*. With tens* n*rv*s, sh* watched the , plan** round pylon aft«r pylon, T*■ in th* lead Suddenly, a toar rose from th* crowd. Marvin Stone's plane crashed and he wa* killed Gri*f-atrick«n. Elsi* tri** to jump out of her hotel window. CHAPTER FIVE Judith helped her to the bed. She pulled off Elsi*'* hat. smoothed her hair, made her lie down. The telephone rang. Judith got up, took the receiver off the hook. With one eye on Elsie, Judith asked the operator to stop all calls to the room. Elsi* lay quiet on the bed now, completely spent by the storm of her tear*. Judith tried to think of comforting phrases, but they sounded too empty and futile. Poor Marvin Stone! For years he'd worked up from a mechanic so that some d*y he could get into the big race. It had been his dream Now it wa, over. Fhe gues-ed a lot of thing* were like that. Elsie was weeping, silently, aimlessly. Judith's lip* were stiff a* she said: “H* would have wanted to go out like this ... if it had to be." Elsie turned her face to the wall “But it didn’t have to be!" She ( sat up suddenly "I haven't told you. He wanted to live. I’m going to have a child.” Then she dropped bark onto the pillow; her eye* closed . .. , Judith wished desperately that ( Ten would come. He wa* Marvin's old fnend She tried to reach Tex on the telephone but their room did ' not answer No, he wouldn't be back from the airport yet. , Part of the gang was back all , right. Judith could hear them. The , celebration had begun. Homebody aero** the court was singing. Several other* joined in. A radio blared j somewhere from above. There was laughter.... Fortunately Elsie did ' not seem to notice. Now the crowd was doing "Mademoiselle from Armentiers." Some of the "Early Birds" probably. If ! only they'd stop! If she could get th«ir room number, she'd ask them to. But she couldn't, with Elsie there to hear. Judith watched the crumpled figure on the bed in despair. "I should get a doctor.” When sh* telephoned, th* house physician was out. That etaptag/ "flow can they do that when Marvin's gone?” The wife'* voice was piteous. Judith tried to recall Marvin's relative*. There wa* a half-brother, ■he seemed to remember. If only she could get some of Elsie's relatives bar*. Judith asked about them "My aunt. When Judith finally turned away from the window, Dudley wa* watching her. She realised for the first time he wa* in evening doth**. He’d be going to the banquet, of course. The silence hung in th* 1 rpum like a cloud. Judith wa* glad when the doctor joined them. “She’x dropped off to sliwp. I put a sedative in the milk." He dosed up hi* bag which was on the chair. "Somebody had better stay with h< r. Sh*'s suffered a bad shock." “I’iJ stay,” said Judith. "Here's my card if you need m* again. But I think sheTl deep until daylight probably.'’ When the two men were ready to leave, Dudley held Judith's hand 1 for a minute. “I’v* ordered a supper sent up here. After the banquet.
