CHAPTER FOURTEEN A* Gaby fitted her key into the lock of th* door, sb* felt a tremor *f foreboding. When she entered the small room she saw immediately it wa* unoccupied. More than unoccupied, it wa* partially uninhabited, for Peter’s beloved book* were gone from their accustomed place. A* if in a dream sh* enter**! the small place. A cursory glance failed to divulge anything mor*, *o she vent into the kitebmett*. It was also bare of any further evidence of Peter having taken leave. It wa* in the dressing room, propped against a sapphire stoppered rock crystal perfume bottle, that she found his note. She read it, the tear* streaming down hsr face unheeded. Gabrielle: I’v* just had a wire from my cousin in New York wanting me to come at once. He wired me advance money, so I think I should go. After last night, •nd because of th* other nights, there doesn’t seem to be any reason for not going. If you ears to, you may join m» later. I will send you my address at soon a* I’m located. PETER. The minutes slipped by and still she stood there immobile. The tear* had stopped, and there wa* no sound in the apartment except her labored breathing. Abruptly, she noticed there was no tick of the familiar old alarm clock. She had placed a small, bunjo type electric elock on the wall in the other room, and had relegated the bright green alarm clock to the dressing room. Now it wa* gone, and somehow she felt sad about it. Sh« had never cared for the shabby, second-hand books; she had openly resented the presence of th* too green alarm clock; but she had never realized until now how decorative the tall, black haired Peter had been to the small place. All at once, she opened the door of the clothespress. Yes, her head nodded solemnly, certainly, he was unconditionally gone. His one good suit and the two extra pairs of pants were not there. She opened the lower drawer of th* dresser. It was as though she sought proof that he was really gone. Rising from her position she suddenly seemed to feel alive once more. The numbness W:i* gone, a* were Peter's shirts and underwear. Straightening her figure, Gabrielle took a deep breath and. with a sob, turned, and hurried out of the apartment. Running down tbe stair*, she thought abstractedly that something would hav* to be done with the furnishings. The bills, too, would have to be taken care of. The lovely new refrigerator would hav* to be sold. She joined her father, a grim set expression on her face. ”He’* left. Daddy. He couldn’t wait, 1 guess. There wa* a note saying I'd hear soon ” “That’* a peculiar way to act." her father aaid. with obvious reluctance. ’’Seem* a* though he might have waited until you got home. Gaby." Gabrielle drove on without say. ing anything. Her ehin was up. her •yes looked st might ahead as though driving through the almost deserted street waa difficult. Her slim brown hands clinched th* steering wheel until the knuckle* showed white. Upon reaching home, Sam spoke quietly, almost expressionlessly: “Better put your car in the north garage, Gany. Jake has th* garden tool* in the south one now.” She obediently drew up before the north gar*K”. "topped, and waited while Sam got heavily out of th* car and opened the door for her. da, and went into the long, cool hall. ’’Hello, daslingx!" called her mother from the dusky interior of the living rm They went in, Gabrielle taking the first chair aa though she could go no farther; Sam going oy*r to Helen, and kissing her lightly. He Mid: "Going up and *how*r, Helen, if there’s time before dinar-: ” “There- will be," replied bls wife, looking at Gabrielle’* dumped figure with a alow frown. "Hurry dearill have Violet hold dinner for half an hour.” “You’d better shower off. too, Gaby,” Sam said kindly as he passed by her. “Those dusty roads out at the field* make a person feel filthy I” When hi* heavy step* had died away in the sgper part if the hesse. Helen asked in a low voice: “What’s wrong, GabrieHef” Gabriella shut her eye* tightly, as though to fret herself from some unhappy sights “Peter’s left me, Mummy," she said, burying her face in her hand*. She hadn't called her mother th* affectionate little name used in her childhood days for years, and Helen Snow’s feature* contracted suddenly. Getting up she cam* over to the chair where Gabrielle made a small, bunched-up heap. "Tell Mummy shout It, dear," she said, putting her arm* around the slender form. Gabrielle turned with a gulp and buried her face against her mother's breast. Helen took off the small hat and pushed the soft, flaxen curl* away from her daughhot forebead. Slowly the word* tumbled out and, although they were related In a disconnected manner, Mr*. Snow soon had the picture firmly in mind. “But. Mummy —I love him! What’ll I dor Gabrielle wa* mor* broken up than Helen had ever seen her. More than the time when her beloved rag doll had spilled it* inside* all over everything. Th«n she hadn't been able to understand that it could be fixed; now. she seemed to think there was no fixing her marriage. “He’ll write, dear, and you can go to him—if that’s what you want to do. Anyway, Gabrieli*, won't you go up now and shower and dress? There are several of your old dresses and there’* lingerie in your room. Violet did up that sweet pink organdie just the other day. Put that on, dear.” Gabrielle sighed. Sometimes, she thought. It seemed that no one ever took her marriage to Peter with the seriousness it deserved. She rose to go upstairs, feeling that her life was utterly ruined. "I’m happy to have you hem* again, darling," said Helen aoftly. * * * * The following days were unpleasant for them al). Gabrieli* ate practically nothing, did practically nothing, and said practically nothing. And at night, when she waa alone in her old room, the daffodil yellow room which had been decorated at her exact design, she didn’t cry very much, a* Sam and Helen surmised sb* did. Gabrieli* had hardly known what she felt henelf, the night when she knew peter we* gone. At first she had felt that only being with Peter mattered; but upon eold analysis she decided that she had better face tbe truth, admit sh* had made a mistake, take up her life where it had been before her marriage. And then. too. there had been no word from Peter. It did seem he could write, thought Gabrielle, when almost a week had gon* by. Her parents made no mention of Peter, treating her aa though she had never left their roof, a* though she were "till th* thoughtless, fen loving girl sh* had been only • few short week* before. Homettme* Gabrielle wa* thankful Cor this, other time* ah* felt sh* would scream with nerves If Peter didn’t write soon

Exactly enc week after he had left Tccumtelalia. Gabrielle road in th* paper that Dorothy and Tony were fc*ported home from Bermuda is a few day*. She wondered how their marriage had turned out. Os course, they had money, or rather, their parent* had. Then, too, they had always been expected to marry each other. When the mailman came Helen , wa* shopping and Violet was busy in th* kitchen. Gabrielle brought Peter’* tetter in with a lot of other mall and, when she saw it, her heart stood still. Now, she thought, everything would be all right. Laying tbe other letters on Humble in the hail, sh* took Peter’s tetter and hurried up to her room. There waa no on* about, but she felt she wanted to be off by herself. When she had finished reading it, ah* read it again, her exproaaion beearning set and angry looking. Said the letter: Gabrielle: I suppose by now you know I paid the bills, gave the landlady a week's pay, and took everything of mine out of th* apartment I hop* thing* weren't too hard for you otherwise. I have a job with the BlueGay Boy* a* pianist nnd soloist I'm very fortunate, but, of course, my cousin cinched it for me. I .will tend you money to come here if you want to come. I’ll pay for a divorce if that's what you want. You will have to figure these thing* out for yourself because I have all I can manage just now. Sorry 1 couldn’t tell you goodbye but I had to be here at a certain time, and so had to leave when I did. Good luck, PETER. There followed his address and that waa all. Stunned by the finality of the words, Gabrielle Mt looking out that’ window through the flamboyantlyJ i flowering window box. A robin lit] on it* edge, chirped questioningly,' cocked it* head on one aids and eyed ' the still figure of the girl inquisi-1 tively out of one tiny, brilliant orb.
