SYNOPSIS Major Brucs Kilgour, of the British Intslligsncs Service, anlista the aid of Captain Hugh North, of the U. S. Army Intelligence, in aolving several puxiling murders in Cairo. On the left arm of each victim was found s woman's red and black garter. The police believe the killings sre connected with gun-running activities in Egypt. The killer is known by the pseudonym of “Mr. Armstrong.** Aboard the S. S Fort Lucknow enroute to Cairo. Kilgour and North act as strangers. It has been arranged that North sit at the Captain's table with an interesting group whoee acquaintanceship might prove valuable in Cairo. It consiete of M Lavaaseur. a sardonic Frenchman; Dr. Larkin Ladd, egyptologist and head of Lawrence College in Cairo, and hie lovely daughter, Lolita; a friend, Daidre Clark; Richard Follonsbee, salesman for Heineman and Schlager, arms manufacturers (Follonsbee claims be sells "sewing machines and reapers”); an exotic beauty. Natika Black, and Monsieur Phillipides, retired president of the Italo-Hellenic Chemical Works which manufacture poison gas Zara. Dr. Ladd's wife, is too ill to join them. Follonsbee. obviously perturbed about something. : asks North to visit him in his cabin later. After dinner. North goes on deck where he meets Dr. and Mrs Ladd. They go to the Bacchants Room for liqueurs. There North hears Natika conversing with Phillipides in Creek. Further on, Lolita site with Follonsbee and an Egyptian, named Ben Yamen Hasid Pasha. Zara'a personality puxxles North. Her features are strong though delicately molded and her wide cheek line tapered to a small dimpled chia. She wore a knitted drese instead of an evening gown, and no stockings. Just then Natika and Phillipides join the group with the news of another garter murder-the body of a German named Wolff was found in the desert The man had been dead for weeks. Follonsbee turns white. 'T have a letter to Wolff.” he said thickly. A discussion of the risks of gun-running followed, during which Zara makes her apologies am.' retires. The party breaks up. Shortly after. North goes to Follonsbce's cabin Getting no answer to his knock, be opens the door and finds the suite in wild disorder. In the bottom of the bathtub lay Follonsbeebound and gagged! CHAPTER IX The salesman's white mess jacket uad become a pattern of vivid scarlet stains. In the young chap's gray-blue eyes North read a remnant of intelligence but the light was shockingly dim. Even more poignant was Follonrbee’s bewildered expression . . . Rousing himself, North stripped off hie dinner jacket and rolled up hie aleevea ere, in hurried gentleness, he began loosening the gag He saw there was no hope for the wounded man; a man eannot live long with a shot through the center of his stomach. When North freed the young Englishman's mouth, he uttered n pitiful groan. “Hurts— Uh h! Stop it—do something—can't stand—” “Who did this?* - “Don't know— My head—” Only then was North aware of a terrible pulpy bruise distorting the back of the dying man's head. “You didn't e»4n glimpse your aaeailant at ail?” Follonsbee made dreadful efforts and choked out, “Confidential—talcum.” or something like that. “Shot me—watched—laughed!” A curtain seemed to descend over the victim's eyes. “Millions in it— Not afraid— Fool 'em— A lot of money. She was beautiful— Cruel —blue hand— Oh-h-h, it hurts— Mother, make it stop—” “Foilonsbee!" Desperately North tried to rouse the dying youth but gradually the agonised body's rigidIty lessened? Sweating. North stood up. heaved a small sigh and washed hie hands ere he began carefully to scrutinise hia surroundings. For a time be diecovered nothing of intoi eel, then on the loer behind

a towel hamper he eame across a small shred of cloth. It was charred as by a fierce flame. Further search rewarded him with another larger fragment. Then he hurriedly observed a firm rule of his and entered in a email loose-leaf notebook every one of the murdered man's last words. Three or four phrases stood out, “Talcum", “Confidential'*, “Blue hand.” A rather brief yet thorough search proved the murderer 100 astute to leave a spent cartridge cane on the scene of the crime—providing he had used an automatic pistol. Steeling himself to the unpleasant task of determining just where and how the victim had received his fatal wound. Hugh North again bent over the tub.
i . L Around Follonobee's left arm was a woman's fancy black satin garter with a scarlet rosette....
"Took a rhromiumetecl conscience to run a job like this,** he reflected. "Imagine tying the poor fellow up and dropping him into a tub before shooting him—through the body, too! Cruel!" Cruel? Follonebee had used that word. Apparently the murderer had lingered to enjoy his victim's throes. What a pathetic terminus to Richard Follonsbee’e dreams of quick wealth! The man from G-2 seiaed the corpse and turned it slightly sidewise. Ha! A dull gleam of bright metal shone beneath a jagged star of splintered enamel. No doubt now remained that Follonsbee had been shot while lying in the tub! Around Follonsbee’e left arm was a woman's fancy black satin gar ter with a scarlet rosette gathered by many Ano little stitches and secured here and there with weaver's knots! A queer sense of breathlessness gripped Hugh North on recalling to the last syllable Dr. talk in the Bacchante Room. Armstrong, ephemeral perpetrator of the Cairo garter murders, was aboard this ship/ Bruce Kilgour must bo informed at once. He severed the garter from the still-warm body, and held it to the light. The garter’s inner aide betrayed traces of white powder. Why? Um! And along its black lace edging there was a similar light diaMloration. Uneasily aware of the passage of time. North swung out into the living room and got quite a shock when he behold a small square of paper propped against the inkstand on a desk. Neatly printed was the men**"MAJ. KILGOUR. STICK THIS IN YOUR PIPE. BETTER GET RIGHT." North selected an envelope into which he dropped the pieces of singed cloth.

A cautious knocking caused him to retreat to the bedroom and resume his dinner jacket. This done, he closed the bedroom door after him and stood in the sitting room. Who the devil could this be? “Follonsbee?** a muffled voice queried, “how about • nightrap?” North ahifted to a spot back of the sitting-room's door — the one with the faulty lock Follonsbee had joked about Fervently North yearned for his usually inseparable .32 but po«»ed himself for action when, after a second soft knock, the door commenced to open. The hall light was casting into silhouette a profile and he relaxed instantly. He would have recognised that outline in a million. “Come in,** North rapped in a
sharp undertone, “and shut that door!” “Hugh! For Heaven's sake, what are pvu doing here?** Bruce Kilgour paused, hand on the doorknob. “Follonsbee listening?" The Englishman's long face had lost its habitual and deceptive expression of lazy good nature. "No." North’s reply was equable. “What brought you here?" Kilgour seemed to debate another question but instead he smiled, and his eyes betrayed a carefully sub dued excitement. “My reply from the Yard. Seems we're in luck. Thia fellow is Eng liab, a Manxman to be exact. His backers, a Central European muni tions firm called Heineman end Schlager, have chartered a small freighter, the Lyrta. They've loaded her to the guard* with arms and ammunition. Rhe cleared Fda yes. terday ostensibly for South Ai.*er ica, but she'll never ciear the Straits of Gibraltar.** Kilgour paused. “You can guess what that means?” "Arms for Arabs?” "Precisely! That's the beauty of it Wav.n Follonsbee and give him enough rope and then By the bye, where is be?” “In there,” North said and pointed to the bathroom. Irritation hardened Kilgour's features. “And you let me talk 1" “ft's no matter. Rruce. He's dead. Murdered with fiendish cruelty You’ll have to find some other stalking horse.” “Mutd The devil you say!" Before North’s eyes Bruce Kilgour’s gaunt figure seemed to grow Inches taller His law shut with a eliek. North added “He's not pretty. Don't overlook i the garter 1 found on his arm.
