CHAPIER XXXVI Tarry changed the subject, as he always did when it took an unpleax ant turn. x "So you’ve lost Randall* One of Uiy best bets! What happened between you?" "I turned him and his rotten offer ■ down.” "So?" He narrowed his eye,. 1 “Seem.’ you don’t play your cards properly. Others are smarter than you are.” "Whom?" ■'Amanda Stone, for one. Her bi n her may be noble—though 1 doubt it—he’s out for his own financial interests and make no mistake i ah.,ut it. Hut Amanda doesn’t mix. 1 a trick. Bet my boots, she’il land - him!" Moira looked curiously through the social columns of the papers in the next few days. Amanda's name | was indeed linked with Randall's in parties at the E! .Martino, country- j hou-e week-ends, dances, restaurants. The announcement of their en- I gageinent followed all this. • • • Madison once more! Home! She wa« back with her own kind. Lark of money had compelled : that move. Her excuse to her father and her aunt was the demolishing of the building where she had her i apartment. They welcomed her warmly. Made much of her, though, in their fond eyes, she was n<> prodigal returning. ! They were promt of her. Job-seeking again. "But not in a beauty-shop. Moira! | Please no? Vour father’s poaitiM i —do remember it! And your own, i dear child!” Aunt Melissa was n good deal of a snob. Besides, she liked having her , niece aroun l. Moira was a vast , help in the house. She shouldered 1 much of the housekeeping. Weeks passed. Spring came in a rush. Torrenliaily lowly. A new green world. It woke longings in Moira. Longings she had tried to quench forever. The sap was rising in the trees Birds built their nests. Their tiny throats poured passionate songs from early morn. The ecstacy of ' mating filled the air. An ache of nostalgia possessed : her. Love! What was youth without love? One’s own mate! One's own! home! 1 Oh. father and aunt were kind. I But that couldn’t satisfy her empty heart. The sweet rush of- - filled her with intolerable i yearning. To see him again . . .! Why had »h< left New York, j whore at lea-t there was a possi- i bility of running into him? Hearing , of him from friendx? The chancel that he might telephone? Waking at dawn to the birds’ i music, the scent of the dowering * lilac tree below her window drugged I her like a swes-t narcotic. Inbaling its fragrance, she would stare at the primrose sky that was streaking into rose . .. di earning sweet dreams. Happiness! Would she ever know happiness? Increasingly restless as the days went on. The walls of the shabby old house seemed to shut her in with her own thoughts. Riot of Spring in the garden. the tree-lined streets, the flowering commons, were bitter-sweet , . , . painfully stirring. Work! Sure panacea for her uneasiness! She got a Job in the medical department of the Library, cataloging Nine to Ave-thirty. Kighteen dollars a week. It was “ladylike'’ employiacnt, to Aon' Melissa's mind.

| "I don’t see why you wgnt to work when you have me,” her father told her. He was ail for women in the home. He was old-fashioned. But he raised no real objection. He only wanted to see Moira happy. She'd looked too pale and thin - peoAed—these past days. N'or did she bloom out now, shut ■ off from the sun. But she seemed more contented. She was busy. If he knew she was contributing to the home, he gave no sign of it, man like. Tarry wrote that Mrs. Rules' operation was highly successful. “You've got to hand it to Dr. Stone! He's done a swell job! She I looks years and years younger! Moreover, the chap's a bit cf an artist. He's sculptured her face into i vor ething quite pretty!" Tarry was jubilant about having mode a killing in the Market, unexpectodly, retrieving a good deal of M rs. Huies’ cash. He enclosed a bill for fifty doli lars, part payment on the loan she had advanced. She used some of the money to I nuy Spring clothes. For Aunt Melusa a new Spring bonnet. The remainder to tradesmen. As usual, bills were in arrears. Tarry wrote again. Another check. Another glowing account of Mrs. Rules' rejuvenation. The accident, it seemed, was turning out a blessing, thanks to the art of the j surgeon. j "He’ll marry her in the end!” A third missive pointed to that. Mrs. Huies, in spite of losses on the Mark't. had “quite a hunk of ■ dough”—and she owned her own 'apartment. The building was coj op< rativc. "She wants a trip abroad,” wrote i Tarry. "Has a yen for Italy in the I Spring. I may g<> with her, to look after her affairs." May and November! But the cal- , endar had been turned back! Noi vember was Spring! It was fashionable for women in the Forties to wed striplings, especially when lines had been eradicated- faces lifted .., "He’ll probably be quite good to her as long as she has the money,” Moira thought. Nor did she feel one pang of envy She bought a New York Sunday tabloid, one afternoon. There wan -a photograph, in color, of Amanda, that made her quite handsome She : was to be married to Randall the brat of June. An announcement in a local, newspaper drove thoughts of Amanda and her fianed temporarily | | from her mind. I Dr. Rodney Stone was coming to i i Madison the day after tomorrow tn . deliver a lecturepn plastic surgery!, I The Medical Association was to I give a dinner in his honor, followed ' by a reception. Many of those professors were 1 I her father's friends. Was there a chance . . . ? Would they meet at ail? She brought up the subject that I night. (Speak casually. Don't be a fool. Don't seam too keen.) "Dinners and receptions, Moira,'', said her father, "arc not in my line. Guess I'm too old. Or out of the running." "You’re not You're the most dis-tinguished-looking person." He shook his head. "If you know this young Dr. Stone, it wouldn’t be amiss to drop him a note and invite him U> call on you. Aunt Melissa would chaperone ; you." She shook out a little laugh. Old- . fashioned pct! He wouldn't underI stand—and there was really nothI ing to explain — Dr. Stone didn't give two hoots ' about her. And yeV and yet — The day came. According to th* I papers, he would arrive at the station at live. Why not slip out of the Library and down to the depot?

What if it did seem like chasm? him? One liad I* go right afttr one’s man in the year 1337. For too long, the old standards had cramped her. But, arriving there, the train coming in, she hid behind a pile of baggage. Let others welcome Rodney! No chance of going to the reception in hi* honor, minus her father’s aid. But the fates were working for her. Busy in the medical department of the Library next afternoon, there was an unexpected stir. A noted visitor was being shown around. The distinguished Dr. Stone! Don't hang back now. Her supreme chance! They met. He itemed astonished, definitely pleased. "I've wanted so much to have a word with you. Important Where can we meet?" New England training (one reverted to it in a crisis, didn't on*?) made her reply: “At my home." She gave him the aihires*. "Woifld nine tonight be too late?” After his lecture. “That would suit perfectly." Don't let Aunt Melissa—or father - in on this. She'd commandeer th* living-room. He took her hand. “It’s like a dream, seeing you again. I tried to g» t in touch with you. Amanda said yeu'd gon* South.” Amanda would! Forget hi* sistar . Randall -everything but Rodney. He was looking boyish and eager Her hand in his, they sat down on the old couch with the broker , springs. "My sister's engaged to Rai daN Carlton. Before I’d give my content I had a straight-from-the-»houJ4*r talk with him. You know- there was that misunderstanding at th* Silver Chimes Inn—that weekend—- | you may remember we met?” "Yes." "I misunderstood. The register. You don't know—” "It was in no way my fault. I had only come after my friend Evelyn Groves. I wu afraid she'd get in ' trouble. The signature* in the reg- ' uter were unknown to me. I stayed with Evelyn that night.” "Randall explained. He owned i up. He admitted he'd played the part of a cad. We'll have to forget ; that." “I'm willing." “Amanda want* him. They're going to live abroad." Then: i “Moira, will you ever forgive me for my suspicions? I'm sorry I And | I've something else to tell you." He paused. Scent of the lilac was all about them, and the spring flowers. “I'm in love with you, Moira. Have been, for a long time. And such a f'>ol I didn't really know It!” "Rodney -“ very low—"bow did yvu And out? Tell me that." "In court that day—Nurse Emmet knew—poor sou! -” "What she said?" Her heart beat fast. “It was the truth. 3hes better, Moira. Transferred to another hospital. It was a nervous breakdown. Nothing really to do with—us?" Chivalrous Rodney! She lovsd him for that. "I want you, Moira. Will you marry me?” His arms about her, they looked into each other’s eyes. “Ye*. Rodney." Their lip* met in a long kiss of understanding.
