'LOVES INTERLUDES
CHAPTER XXXII Tt is an old truism that calamiti** eome fart on top of each other. Out of the nine students analyzed on that fateful fourth day of the class, seven wanted their money back, and the remaining two were injured or tearful. Cora’s rebuke ringing in her rant, Moira went to her solitary apartment, sadder and wiser. She admitted her mistake. Women couldn't "take” criticism. When the doorbell rang, and Evelyn Grove* came up, she was glad. But the sight of Joe Deverncy, behind her friend, annoyed het. Presently there was a ’phone call from Evelyn’s mother. Evelyn said, casually, that she must run home for u moment. She'd be right back. Joe remained. He wanted to tip Moira off about the handling of her class in "charm.” Really it was a gold-mine. But there must be an end to the voting paper*. They'd think up a new stunt. Moira was fatigued. Let Joe talk. What did she care? The doorbell rang again. Evelyn. of course. But it wasn't Evelyn. It was th* last person in the world who should appear... Cora Devrrney had com* to tell her that just at the closing of th* beauty parlor, a suit for 1150.000 damage* had been served by Mr*. Rule*' lawyer*. For “permanent disfigurement” by Moira! “And yoa're going lo pay for this, my girl! Don’t think / don't know about your on-going* with Kimberly Delalour— hi* wife told me! It's my husband now! He sneak* here to see you! I've just heard about that weekend at th* Inn up the Hudson! You thought you’d get away with It, but you didn't! I'll sue you for alienation of affection, you ungrateful girl! And don't you ever dare show your nose inside of Deverney’a shop, or I'll have you arrested!” • • • Firwi! Ignominiously discharged! Not only labelled an untrustworthy operator, but a huntress of other women's husbands! And not a word of truth in either accusation! "This comes," said Moira to herself, after her front door had slammed behind the retreating Deverneys, "of being the kind of a fool who puts other people's interests ahead of her own!” The rewards of altruism! Her mind turned resentfully to Evelyn Grove*. This friend of hers, through selfish folly and light-headedne** and lack of common sense, had brought calamity on Moira. Against the rules of th* beauty parlor and in Cora's absence, Evelyn had struck th* match for h*r cigarette that had caused the egplosion and th* accident to Mr*. Rules. Evelyn had ducked her share of the blame. Hidden behind Moira. "But now that 111 have to take the stand in a court of law, and tell my side of the case, I shan't protect her. HI tell th* whole truth.” Yet what good could it do anybody, now? For added to the law suit, in Cora Deverney’a mind, was the rumor of the weekend at the country inn whence Moira had gone, recklessly, fired with th* detir* to protect Evelyn! Going into th* why* and wherofors of that drinking party would drive them all Into deeper mir*.... It would confirm Cora's suspicion*. Sh* would n*v*r believe that Evelyn snd Moira h*d spent that night in a room together It was the irony of fat* that Evelyn, bringing Joe here tonight, should have run over to her own home for a few minute*, and during that interlude, Jo*'* wife had appeared. Incriminating scene! How *ay: "Evelyn brought your husband her* to my apartment I loathe th* sight of hitn! N Thinking it over, some of her New England father’s admonitions earn* to her mind. Th* proverb about bird* of a f*«th*i flocking together, for instance I If on* were straight at heart why lead oneself to other people’s erookrdnrss, and so to bofag misjudged? "Am 1 my sister's keeper?" Moir* misquoted, with * wry saute.

That rule had brought her downfall. Not only in business, but In that inner secret life that is moat truly a woman's. Looking back to it through Cora's eyes, and now with a keener insight in her own, she could see that the affair of the inn had cost her Dr. Rodney Stone's friendship.... True, they had had that love scene in a dark corner of the deck on the benefit cruise.... "A hole-and-corner affair. He thought me that kind of a girl! Anybody's girl!” She saw it all plainly. But too late to rectify it. For even if, by some incredible and lucky chance, the whole thing were put straight and aboveboard, a man’s feeling* changed. On* couldn't gn back, emotionally speaking, once love had been tarnished. Love was a sensitive plant! Under the harsh winds of gosup and misunderstanding, it shriielied and died! Thinking these things—jobless, loveless — Moira saw that her friendship for Evelyn had indeed been one-sided. The buzser sounded. Footstep*. Evelyn's bright face, gay laugh. "Hope you haven't been vamping my Joseph!—" ~He's gone. Cora earn* for him. !'m fired." Evelyn's mouth fell open. She stated about the apartment. Gaped at Moire, much in the manner of a goldfish. For the first time. Moire noted sh* was weak-chinned. Resentment welled in her. The story was quickly told. "There's only one thing I have to ask you, and then I’d prefer to see no more of you, Evelyn. Go to your precious Joe. and tell him 1 demand a reference ao that 1 can get another job. You both owe me that. The alternative is that I make a clean breast of it with Core.” She called up Tarry, after Evelyn had gone. The silence in the little flat was devastating. "< an you com* over? I'v* things to discuss.” "Why not over the 'phone?” There spoke his dislike of the unpleasant. Tarry wae another weak reed she had bolstered. She’d been a fool. But that was all over. Tarry arrived. In a smart new suit. Was that a part of her loan? "Got a littl* drink for me?” A typical greeting. "No. if you can afford to buy naw cloth**, you can manage to bring your own bottle," she snapped. He blinked, offended, at her. "So you think I’m that much of a sponger, huh?” “I only think that you owe me *everal hundred dollar*, and that 111 have to ask you to start paying me back some. I’m out of a job.” ‘Good lord! Fired?” But he showed no surprise. He was a bad actor. She thought: "He know* perfectly that Mrs. Rule* has instigated suit!” She said, tartly: "Don't pretend that you don't know why? If sh* wins, it'll be to your advantage You have her power-of-atlorney. You’ll have plenty to blow to th* four winds'” Watching him sharply, she saw him flush. "You mean- ” "—What you already know. But I have your 1. O. U. on paper.” "Listen. I cant pay you anything now. 1— Moira—listen—l'v* put s lot of her money on the wrong horse ” “You—would I" There was* prsgnant paunr.
