CHAPTER XXVIII The check waft put through. The elerk knew her. She drew the full amount in Wils. Who knew, she might need them all before the day was at • closet Then down to Wall Street in ft taxicab. She wouldn't trust the subway. In one compartment of her bag was the envelope for Tarry containing the five hundred dollar*. Six hundred dollars, in another, for her father. She dung tightly onto that handbag. Tarry waa pathetically grateful, and also obvi-iusly ashamed, when she added a fifty dollar bill to the original amount, surmising he had speculated with hi* client's money because his plrasure-luving soul had run him into debt. "1 heard you were at the El Martino a time or two," she contrived to say. in an offhand manner, to salve his young pride, "a dollar a drink can run you into plenty. Maybe this'll help out." “I swear 111 pay you back every nickel.” She wondered how? But refrained from moralizing. Where waa the good" With a hand no longer shaking—for th* cash waft safely in his pocket —he wrote her an 1.0. U. Told her she was an angel. Her thought* flew to Ute El Martino. The long room in azure and white —stars twinkling on the deep blue ceiling . . . along the walls the gold leaf palms. Chinchillas .. sables ... ermine* ... diamonds .. . emerald*. Exotic women . . . glittering names galore. She'd met Randall in that club. Had not like*! him in the beginning. But compared to Tarry, to Rodney Stone, had he not proved himself a truer friend than those two who had so fascinated her for a time? The thought of Rodney at this moment was a horrible ache. Ironically, it was hi* father-in-law-to-be who had saved the situation for poor Tarry. But don't let Tarry know about the source of the money, for by the terms of the letter Mompanying the check she was tacitly tied She must abide by that, eost what it may. Tarry was probably thinking that the money cam* from Randail at bis own suggestion. Didn’t dm what kind <>f string* were attached! Thinking this, and watching Tarry wolf a second breakfast (the shadow of jail definitely removed), she told herself that men were cheats and hypocrites and liars, interested in nothing but food, drink and the sport of love-making. Their I passion for money meant just that! Cash for self-indulgence! Why not meet them on their own ground? Why not indulge herself a little with the remnant of the check she had fairly earned? It was a sparkling morning. The | sunbeams showed the shabbiness of her old coat. An hour and a half left till her Bc.ston-going train at noon. She had money in her purse. Why not look the imrt? Would Rodney Stone have turned i fr«m her to Ruth, if she'd had th* wits -and cash—to be sartorially emart? He had liked her Admired her. Even loved her. There had been that unforgettable moment on the boat. To illustrate her point, she remembered the gorgeous Itirrd gown! Tarry dropped her off at the department store where she had seen that coat in the window yesterday —deep burgundy duvetyn swathed tn Mattering blue fox Seventy-mn«-fifty. “Reducedfrom one hundred and ten dollars, madam. It was made for you. You look a dream ” And she did. The high roll collar framing the pale beauty of her face, her slender neck that was like the stem of a flower. Tight-fitted bodice ■inched at the waist accentuating her *iend*rness. Swirling skirt*, fur-edged, making her look like an illustration from Vogue!

“It doe* thing* for you. madam. Th>- gentlemen would admire you in it. Your sweetheart? Ur a husband, perhaps?" “I've neither the one nor the other,” said Moira tartly. Then her naturally pretty mouth relaxed into a smile. There were plenty men in the world who would admire her. Lit' waa far from over. She’d put Dr. Stone out of her mind. She'd given Ruth to him. She wasn't going to sacrifice all gaiety, all happiness. because one man out of a million had failed. She paid for th* coat. Took it over her arm There was a shoe sale in the basement Beautiful suMe pumps, the color of her coat, at two-ninety-five. To the glove counter. Chamois pull-on* that matched the fur. A handbag roomy envelope typo—on the same tone. Quick dash to her apartment. Out of her working dress and into the burgundy velvet purchased previously to wear at the hospiud bazaar Thanks to Amanda, she had worn it in the kitchen. Nor was it any more suitable for the train. But she must look lovely for her father—opulent, for her own spirit. The new wine velour hat, bought with the dress, with it* tiny, off-the-face brim, completed the ensemble. A picture of dainty beauty stepped into the taxi she had 'phoned for. A transformed girl. Ixxiking at her, her father would make no bone* about accepting th* money needed for the mortgage interest. He would see her as successful. Working-girl-makea-good-in-the-big-city! “Grand Central as fast a* you can make it," .Moira told the driver. It wm a wild, exhilarating ride. No time to buy her Pullman ticket. She dropped breathlessly into a deeppadded chair in the club car. Men on al! sidex' Already ordering pre-luncheon highballs, eoektail* and aperitifs. She'd been right in siting up their interest in food, drinking and love-making a* predominating. A’ready there were, vulgarly speaking, glad-eye* galore. Bh# bought her ticket, a magazine. some cigarette*, and leaned back, luxuriating in thia brief change tn the usual routine. Houses flew past. Her magazine slipped to the floor. The man in the next seat grabbed it as »he «woop<«d for it. Their head* bumped. Swift apology front him. I "No matter. The train swing* so on the curves." She gave him a smile. I ll« waa long, lean, aristocraticI looking. With a nice face. "Fortyish!" she decided. And with money. B!ea«ed money. Surriy a high-priced English tai’or had eut those gray tweed*? And she had glimpsed his gold cigarette case. He naw a slim dark girl with a ' sensitive mouth and quite lieautifu) I eyes. Smartly dressed, with pretty feet and ankle*. Or wm she? “You’ve been abroad, I take it?” She only hesitated for a moment, then »aid coolly, watching her effect: “I waa educated in Europe." Why should girls like Amanda and Ruth have all the privileges, the background? She’d create one for herself, out of her own mind. "School in Paris?" “Naturally. Lausanne first. I adored the winter sports. D’yuu ski?” "Once upon a time. Christmas at St. Montx. Bob-sleighing. The Create Run. You know it. of course?" She was Mtonishad to bear hem self say, glibly: “I've been down N. It was frightfully exhilarating.” s “And dangerous." Was he looking nt her quizzically? He ventured: “You carry n* sign.” Gave her another odd glance "How do you mean?" “No red light visible!" “A left-handed compliment?" She ought to snub him. But it wm her own fault.
