“LOVE’S INTERLUDE” By May Christie
SYNOPSIS Moira Carswa and Tarleton Gri«s are in love, but wealthy Joseph Griggs has social aspirations for his son and does not approve of a match with ■ mere eth-nok-tlst'i daughter. Sc irresponaible Tarry placate* the old man by be.oming engaged to Lady Careen Kilmorny. At a hunt* meet, the day before their scheduled marriage, Lady Careen comet upon Tarry and Moira in a tender embrace. Dicillutioned, she gallop* off, ttraight toward* "Devil'* Leap," a treat herou* jump. She take* it. but fall* and is killed. Tarry goe* abroad, and Moira doesn't see him until month* later when she accompanies a wealthy family to Pari* a* tutor to their two children. There, Tarry and •he plan to marry but again Grigg*, Senior, frustrate* them. They return home in the fall. Then come* the stock market crash. Mr. Grigg* is ruined and the shock kill* him. Tarry get* a position a* a customers' man and Moira become* a beauty operator in Cora Deverneye beauty shop. Mrs. Rule*, a wealthy, middle-aged widow, compliment* Moir* for th* rejuvenation wonder* »h* performed on her face. Mr*. Rule* and Moira leave the (hop together. Seeing Tarry waiting for Moira, th* widow, who i* looking for new worlds to conquer. ask* for an introduction. The young couple goe* to her apartment for cocktails, where Mr*. Rule* < ontrive* to get Tarry alone. Moira i* annoyed but her apirit* rise when, after they leave. Tarry tell* her it had been business that kept him closeted with Mrs. Rules, and that he was going to handle her account. Back at Moira'a apartment, they plan to celebrate, when Cora telephone* that th* ritay Amanda Stone want* a facial immediately* Amanda's brother. Dr. Rodney Stone, a rising, young physician, admits Moira. Dressed in evening clothes for her celebration with Tarry. Dr. Stone mistake* her for a friend of Manda's. He is greatly attracted. CHAPTER X He Hosed the door behind her, moving with a sure, lithe tread. He was 'n evening clothe*, and she noticed the strength of hi* iquare shoulders, the fine long lines of hl* figure, the poise of hi* splendidly shaped head There was no re*em bianee to Amanda in hi* clean-cut features, and Moira thought he had the kindest eyes she had ever looked into, a vividly deep blue in his bronsed faee. He led her into a small room off the foyer where he’d had hi* afterdinner cup of coffee With ita big desk and leather chairs and bookshelves, it looked as if it might be his private sanctum. Embarrassed at the beginning over her equivocal position, the doctor, easily mannered, gave Moira no opportunity to explain her mission in his home. “I’msur. you originally hail from Boston," wa* hi* opening remark. Then: “You see, I studied at Harvard. The accent's almost unmistakable to anyone who’* lived there. Am I not right?" Here was a mutual topic. Why, they had even friend* in common in the City of Bean*! The moment* slqiped away enchantingly. The talk wa* vivid, stimulating. Dr. Stone wa .cd little time in banalities. It wa* odd. thought Moira, how almoat immediately *he felt al home with him. Not odd. however, that involuntarily ahe found herself comparing him with Tarry, for Tarry had been ill'.ng her thought* these lay- In comparison thh man who so easily swung the conver--ation into fascinating channels, Tarry seemed immature and frivolous. Sbo thrust the thoughts aside *■ a disturbing one, remembering how disappo'nted she had felt over the double interruption ot tonight's arrangements. It was smaxing. now, to find that I this brother of her definitely “high hat” customer wa* so congenial, that they had mteresta in common Jcston's art galleries . . . the mu-
seum . . . proms at Harvard she'd i atundad ... thrilling football gamaa , ... she forgot all about Amanda in . lively reminiscanca and discussion. And aa she reacted and reeponded to hi* leads, and the warm blood fluctuated In her ymmg feee lit by 1 intelligence, the doctor thought—studying her all the time—noting her quick neponse, her reedy mind, her grasp of thing*—that here befogs him was an exquisite specimen of young womanhood. Someone suite different from hi* sister’s usual run of friend*. Some one superior. Where Ruth Albion, in a tdte-A-Ute like thia, would have demanded compliments, flirtation, or bored him with trivial chatter of the social round, thia lovely girl was modestly impersonal. She had studied, too. There was a depth of thought, of seriousness, about her, that was attune to the tempo of hi* own mind. Hia life made up of other people's trouble* grim reality hi* daily fare—he was s student of ths heart and soul a* well aa the human body. A quick reader of character. Many women were attracted to thia man, for ha had magnetism Hi* preoccupation with his work, hi* detachment, gave added zip to their pursuit—but he seemed impervious. Thia annoyed Amanda, tha scheming. For more than one rieh. socially prominent girl had confessed to her that she had "fallea" for him, "hook, line and sinker." To meet with no response. To drop Amanda and her brother from gay week-end invitations to palatial estates, race- meets, yachting parties. Sine-’ the brother wouldn’t eome, Amanda was nothing but an "extra woman,’’ and none too attractive at that. She consoled herself by inviting ether women to her home always with an aae to grind herself, of course, and particularly if they had brother*—for her own goal wa* marriage. A rieh marriage Ruth Albion wa* her hop* where Rodney was concerned. Ruth's father thought so highly of hia ability. Amanda cooeidered it would be the crown of his professional career if he would marry Ruth, who made no secret that she was crazy about the young doctor. "He’s tha handsomest thing I’ve ever seen, and when he look* at me with those Hue eyaa of his, 1 go all goofy and thrilly up and down my spine!” Thus Ruth openly, for reticence wa* not the fashion with her fang Now, a* Moira eat with him In tha little study off the foyer of the Perk Avenue flat, th* telephone on hl* desk rang shrilly, bringing her bark to recollection that she was merely her* on business, and that thia might be Amanda I He picked up the Instrument She was so close to him that she could hear the vole* at the other end ot the line. A male voice. The words: "urgent ... no time to lose . . ."—end eome Ixtin medical terms, or so it seemed Came hia brief assurance .Sat he would leave immediately And it seemed to her as though suddenly, with that swift call, an immeasurable distance was put between them— indeed, that the doctor was no longer aware of her presence. For he hurried from the room aithout a word to her. She felt curiously flat. A* though. , having soared in sunlit spheres , above the clouds, she had been suddenly dumped to prosaic, workaday . earth. But almost Immediately, his hat . and coat on, young Dr. Stone reappeared. "A hurry operation . , . well meet later ... it’* been such a pleasure ..." He held out hi* hand, * taking hers in hi* flrm. strong r clasp. There was something utterly 1 electric in that grip of his, as ' though a current had been turned 1 on, to galvanize her hand to his—- - their physical being* welded. Well * meet later," he repeated, hl* blue * eyes intent and serious. * Then he turned and on swift feet < went through the little hall. Came r the slam of the front door, the clang 1 of the elevator gate*. And Moira, alone, the only sound t In her ear* the beating of her own h heart. I, * e * * i. "Sorry to have kept you waiting, i- but I wa* at a cocktail party, and
then I dropped into Ixmgchamps for a bite of dinner with Randall Carlton. He was so insistent. Os course." said Amanda Stone, in her "superior” voice that now stuttered a little, du* to libations, "you've read a!><>ut Randall in the social columns?” "I don’t think so." Moira hastily rose. She was cognisant of two impressions. The first, that Amanda wa* utterly unlike her brother, in looks, manner, everything. The second. that it was vastly fortunate that Amanda had been delayed. The selfishness of having summoned her "after hours," and then callously letting her wait for what might have been a considerably longer time had Mr*. Deverney reached her sooner on the telephone, did not occur to Moira at that moment. For she'd had • marvelous experience. Nor did Amanda Inquire if she had dined. And indeed Moira, exhilarated as she was, was unaware of hunger. "Randy," said Amanda condescendingly, "is one of the most fashionable bachelors in town. Quite a darling, really. And such a divine raeontrur!" Moir* thought wryly, knowing that Amanda didn't think she’d understand the word, but wanted to impress her with superior knowledge; “She means a gossip!" The beautifying process began. Extended on a chaise-lounge in her bedroom, her head wrapped in a towel, the cocktail* Amanda had consumed, plus her social progress, made her loquacious. “Tonight is Ruth Albion's com-ing-out party at Pierre's. I don't mind telling you that my biother and she—well—they're as good a* engaged to be married! Isn't that swell?" The hand that was coaxing cold cream into Amanda's nune-too-pretty countenance missed a stroke upward. "It's really a most desirable match for Rodney.’’ Why this sick feeling? "Her father's the head of his ho*, pita), and as rich as Croesus. He ssy* Rodney is the most distinguished young surgeon they've got. And he's still under thirty." “When will they be married?" Why did her voice sound so queer? What on earth was young Dr. Bums to kerf Why, she'd only Just met him I It was horribly disloyal to Tarry, Moira told herself, to have any feeling whatever about whom Dr. fltone wa* or wasn't going to marry. Yet she was conscious of waiting eagerly Amanda’s reply. "M’m. Nothing settled yet And don't you dare breathe a word of it around I Not," said Amanda ungraciously, “that you're likely to run Into any of our friends, but still they might drop into your beauty shop." Moira said stiffly: “I'm not given to talking." “Oh, you needn't be huffy about it. You know ss well as the next one how crazily the customers do gossip to you girls. I often think-’’ —with an attempt at palliating her rudeness, at placating Moira- "you could get a fine case of biarkmad on us, if you wan’ed to!" Ami Amanda laughed like a hyena. The telephone rang. Presently a maid appeared st the bedroom d<*>r. "Miss St«ne, your brother on the ’phone. He wishes to speak to you personally." The besmeared and betowelled mistress of the flat arose. She returned in a few minutes, and this time rested quietly until the trsat- ’ ment was almost finished. Then she remarked, as though she were thinking aloud: "I wonder who I on earth he could mean? Just before ha rang off. he told me to tell that I friend of mine that he expects! to I get to the party before twelve, and he wanted her to have supper with i him. Also to ask her to reserve sev- ' eral dance*. So I gave him a piece ; of my mind! I told him that Ruth expected to be hi* supper partner. I Aren't men cussed! And who can i this friand of mine be, in whom he’s so suddenly interested?” (To be continued) • 4 u»yr.|lß M CWIMN.
