The police chief pieced together the story of the abduction from an account given by Darrell Gnat, night attendant at the Nampa service satlon. And there Is no reason why we should not have it—even on a very strict budget. For it need not be expensive—and we ean plan to have it fill important needs in our diet. Perhaps we can follow a sbup main course with a hearty suet pudding. If eggs are costly, we can make one egg do for two persons by presenting our eggs combined with other ingredients in a custard or a rice or bread pudding.
i Or a light main course can be followed by ■ * olonill Jrlly Stark. This is extra large pancakes piled one on tup of the other with Jelly and a bit of butter between them. The top is dusted with confectioners' sugar- or brown sugar—then the pile is cut into pie-shaped wedges and served. And here are recipes for a num- ' ber of other inexpensive desserts: Cranberry Italy Poly 4 cups cranberries ; cups sugar 1 cup water | 2 cups all-purpose flour ' 4 tap. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 2 tbsp, butter X cup milk Prick cranberries with fork and cook with the sugar and water »> j minutes. Drain cranberries and save the juice for pudding sauce. Sift flour once before measuring. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together. Cut in butter with pastry j blender or two knives. Add milk to make a soft dough. Roll out dough in oblong shape *» inch thick. Spread well drained berries | on dough. (There should be about | 2 cups of the berries.) Roll up | like a jelly roll and place on one or two pans set on a rack over boiling water in a large kettle or covered roaster. Cover tightly and steam ’» hour. Thia makes 8 to 10 servings. Sauce for Cranberry Roly Poly Blend 2 tbsp, cornstarch with 2 tbsp, cold water and stir into hot cranberry juice drained from the cranberries. (There will be about I 2 cups.) Cook, stirring occasion-. ally, until thickened <lO minutes). Serve over slices of Cranberry Roly My.

Cottage Padding *4 cup shortening X cup sugar 1 egg 1*« cups all-purpose flour 3 Up. baking powder *i tap. salt X cup milk 1 tsp. vanilla Cream shortening, and add sugar gradually. Add well beaten ‘ egg. Sift flour once before mea- ■ suring. Mix and sift flour, baking | powder and salt together, and add alternately with milk. Add vanilla, pour into well greased 11-inch -quart pan and bake 20 minutes in a moderate oven, 850* F. This recipe makes 8 to 8 servings. Vanilla or l-emon Banco Mix 1 cup sugar and 2 tbsp, cornstarch together. Add 2 cups boiling water and H tsp. salt. Boil until clear and thick. Cook over hot water 20 minutes. Beat in 4 tbsp, butter and 2 Up. vanilla <or 2 Up lemon extract and 1 tsp. grated !w>'» Hnd) and servg hot over Cottage Pudding. ( hoeolalo Banco Add 2 sq. chocolate (2 ox.), cut in pieces to 2 cups milk and heat in double boiler. When chocolaU is melted, beat with rotary egg beater until smooth, about 1 minute. Combine 1H tbsp, all-purpose flour, W cup sugar, and H tsp. salt. Add a little of the chocolate mixture to the flour mixture and blend thoroughly. Combine with remaining chocolate in double boiler and cook until thickened, I stirring constantly. Blend in 2 tbsp, butter and I tsp. vanilla. Serve hot with hot Cottage Pudding.
