CHAPTER XXIX As Draper looked up at Slim from a sto-.l in the jockey room guilt was written all over the boy's features. S'im • fuickly took the offensive with the judge, however. “You're wrong. Judge, just as I thought.” he said calmly. "This boy i« all right. He’s just a little weak from makie.e weight. I've had him on a rigid diet getting him down to 114 pounds for today's ride.” “Then how do you explain his brenth?" snapped the judge. “Oh. that's nothing,” Slim replied with a shrug, “He felt a little weak this morning so I made him take a little wine to- to, well, yon know, to tone him up, that's all.” "Ilm'" snorted the judge. "It must have In-en potent wine. We'll get the track doctor and find out” A moment later the doctor came tntn the jockey room and asked Draper to walk a straight line along a .earn in the flooring. With studied concentration Draper managed this acceptably and Slim, as the boy walked across the room, was hopeful wlien the doctor nodded in approval. “Now. let’s see YOU do it," was Draper’s chesty remark to the doctor after making gwd in the test. The doctor flew into a rage "That settles it,” he said. "This kid doesn't ride.” Slim laid his hand on the doctor's shoulder. "You've got to jet him ride. Doe. He's a fresh kid. 1 know, and •houldn’t have said it. I'm not asking any favors fnr this boy, but I brought him here from Florida to rid* a great race horse that’s earned a chan -c. Please, Doc, he a good fellow and overlook the kid's dumb crack.” Slim’s earnestness won Draper the doctor's .eprieve. It was still more than two hours before poet time. Slim took Draper by the arm and pushed him to the track emergency hospital. Feverishly Slim worked over Draper there, sparing no sympathy in pummeling the boy around. Dimples submitted meekly to the rough handling dyr-nr >he mMown The pounding, the black coffee an-’ a cold shower worked wonders with the boy ’Tin sorry I let you down. Slim." Diaper whimpered, coming out of the shower." “Im's don't talk about it. You told me once if I ever needed you to send for you. Well. I never needed you like I do today- and look at you!" "I'm all right. Slim. Itemember the way I lisle Knight Errant the day when I thought I was riding for a job with the colonel? Weil, I'll de it again < n!y beHer " "Never mind the dramatics Go g<u your tack and let's see if you can pass inspection by the judges.” Finn joined Heather between races "Everything is fine,” he assured her cheerfully. But his heart was heavy, • • • • Slim strode into Knight Errant's stable an hour and a half before po«i time. Snapper's mournful face showed by the feed bin. “I’ve been wait,ng for you. I know something,” Snapper pleaded nervously. "Ba*-', s:tt on our side. Slim!” he whispered. "He's sending in a wad on him!” Shm obsv'vsd tartly, “Well, then. It will rase the pain for me if Knight Errant loses.” "I’m telling you the truth." whimper, d Swapper. "Ra»ntt is going to give Cmaancho the biuurwM. He ha- a mar hiding over there across the track to vend the baekstretch tn shine a mirror in Comanche's eyes.” Without another word Slim led Knight Errant *«< of the stable and to the receiving ham. his way, not to Heather, bat into the bos where Edith sat alone. Ho did not give her a chance to x|>eak, for the time was shortening now—the fourth race had been run. "Edith, Basaitt is around dealing ths cards again and he's planning to hand Comanche the nine of hearts He's going to try blinding your hone on the back stretch by shining a mirror in Comanme n The dork, beautiful eyes under Slim's stirred with questions. "That mirror— will it really harm Comanche’s chances. Slim?” "Ruin them I Bassitt knows Comanche always comes to the outside to make his move and if hie man car. spot that mirror on his eyes it’ll atop your henc tea walk UvmaMbe will go craty from the glare—he’ll jump the fence, or anything." "I don’t luwir I’ha? to do, Bhm. Ge to the stewards, I owppoee—a nasty meso araadal In the newspapen. If only 1 could avoid that." Slim snapped hie fingers ”1 know a better way, Edith! Listen, I have a set of trick blinkere with shutters oa them. A eord runs from the blinkers to the jockey's hand and when be wants to elose the blinkers he pulls the cord. Put those blinkers on Comanche today.” “A sort of Venetian blind arrangement, for a horse?” questioned Edith. "Amusing!” But she did not look amused as she pulled herself up, wearily, to send word of the blinkers to her stable. Thank you. Slim," she said gently. "And -Heather is waiting " Edith left hurriedly and Slim made a quick call «m Heather in a nearby to>«. "Remember me? I'm the guy that's going to saddle Knight Errant right now- with Coronado's old raring saddle!" Heather opened her purse and pointed out a erisp new |>i bill. “Look. Slim! I'm putting it all on ' Knight Errant. That shows how much I trust him today. Tell him that. Slim I” Eagerly, with all rancor forgot’•n, s’-tr give Drejer his final 44 ing instructions “I want you to hustle Knight Errant out of the gate. Get a position early and avoid trouble amuad the first turn After that I want you to make only two moves.” ~. Thu :e sketched his equine chess game for the dimpled boy in the riding silks “And duel forget," he wound up owamngl). "that the saddle you're sitting or today was Coronado's." There was a alight delay in getting ready for the parade to the poat while the trick blinkers were being adjusted on the resentful Comanche, under the supervision of Matt Bid die, who had -oom to Edith’s rescue when Slim left her as trainer. Comanche had drawn number 1 post position and Knigbt Errant number 2. A hush of expectancy fell over Heather and Slim and fifi.OW others, their cyan focused anxio-.s|y on the passageway leading from track to paddock where pnncaly animals in flashing colors came nut one by one The blue and gold silk cap of Dimples ttoaper shone over the crest of the emwd Knight Errant pranced onto Um track, shimmering in beauty. Suddenly, at sight of him. Heather rememto-ed! Another day, four years before in this same beautiful arena. Another hone, magnificent—almost, it had seemed to the girl. Heather immortal Then Coronado had quickened her heart-bio memory moved it now And now as a wdlltoa del I are tn gioesv horsehide stretched out single file m the block long equine pageant on its way to the post, tne pressaee at 4d Daa seemed dowa by the rail, a gray figure watehmg. as

four years before he had watrheu Coronado. ’’! mustn’t remcmlier,” thought Heather, trembling. Now Knight Errant marched by her box. His blackness glistened in the Santa Anita sun. His proud head nodded as if in comforting as surance to Heather, but his liquid eyes were fixed straight ahead, down the track. “Slim!” Heather skid in a small, choking voice. "Perhaps he seis Coronado ah»ad -clearing the way for him!” Slim caught htr hand and did not let it go. Only a horseman could understand that note in Heather's voice. Only a man who loved horses could picture the presence of tie Cat Coronado, leading his only r to glory. The grip of Slim's hand recalled Heather to reality. "If he wins.” she said with sudden girlishness, “I know HI faint!” "And if he loses. I will. So thst evens things up,” retorted Slim with a flippancy he was not feeling. In reality he was in an agony of apprehension. for he had glimpsed the round features of Draper taking Knight Errant to the post, and they were white with strain. But Knight Errant! The sight of him stirred Slim. For the first tim« in his life he felt a rightful sense of pride in achievement. He had brought Knight Errant a long ws; in the three months since ho hac taken the horso under his care Wit or loee, now, he could be proud. Hi had datle something with his life. "For the right horse," he thought, and stealing a glance at Heather "and the right girl.” He winced at the thought that all he had done could to wiped out in two minutes of bungling by a faith less jockey -a jockey Slim himself had guided from the rut of mediocrity. And Heather, standing with her hand lost in Slim's in the excitement, waa thinking too. More than ever before her life dependmi on th* fleet limbs of a horse. "If Knight Errant loses.” she thought, "I lose Slim." For Knight Errant, ts beaten, would give Slim bark to Edith A-h leigh H< ather thought bitterly of the patrician Edith, lounging gracefully in her swathing mink coat in I her box. Slim wondered at the sudden way her hand tightened in his as if she could no* let him go. He studied tin tote board. "Comanche fl to 5, Knight Errant • to 1. Say. am I eraay. Heather? Seems to me they should be just the reverse." Slim took heart as he raw Knight Errant standing quietly in his sis! gate. The deep voiced babble of th crowd was subdued to a murmur. Then a swirl of color whirled away from the barrier ano with it ro.e a thundering crescendo of cries. Out of the gnarled mars of hoi m s Slim's binoculars picked up first Rattle and Roll, the meteoric miler, fastest breaking horse in the land, out in front, with Knight Errant second, free from trouble- free and away! “Draper!” yelled 81 im in nervous revulsion as he saw the jockey disregard his ordi rs and lash Knight Errant once as they swept by the judges' stand the first time Then Slim’s fears were allayed. He chattered nervously tn Heather. "It's al! right. Draper's just making sure of getting a position. The boy has a head on him when he wants to use It. He's taking a cross in the reins.” Slim was exuberant as he saw Knight Errant settle down into a smooth stride. "Keep hoping. Heather, thei're entering the baekatretch now."
