SYNOPSIS It was post time for the Santa Anita Handicap. “Coronado," the favorite, with fourteen straight wins, pranced on the track to the applause of the crowd. Dan Milla, his owner, a sportsman of high calibre, hung on the rail. watchiM, Just a fa* hours ago. ho had cob lapsed in the tach room and Charley Baesitt, horseman of unsavory reputation, had taken "C ron.d. to the receiving barn. All h* and Snapper could scrap* together was bet on "Co-o nado." Slim see* Baesitt com* from th* ISO window with a wad of tickets and wonder* which horse he waa betting on. With the yell. •They're Offt," he rushes to th* Iced, apparently uninjured, but before the horse* had gon* a eiattenth of a mile, Coronado's leg* buckled and ha crashed headlong to the ground-dying ot a broken back. Th* blow is too much for Dan and, nest day. he dies. All that ar* left to Heather ar* * breeding farm in Carmel Valley and “Artichoke*," a etable-hand of whom Coronado was especially fond. Three day* leter. Heather sit* in the lobby of th* Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, crushed and lonely. The place buczed with insinuation* regarding Charlie Baisitt and Coronado'* "accidental" death. CHAPTER IV It was then Slim Maynard sauntered near Heather on his way to the bar with Snapper. Wherever horsemen gathered, this pair eould usually be found, a* Slim put H, “bussing around." "Well, I'm glad the meet's about over.” Snapper was opining gloomily, Jooking back over the winter racing season in unpleasant retrospection. “I’d rather take my bath in th* good old conventional Saturday night way instead of every afternoon in those Santa Anita mutual*. And Coronado's crack-up waa th* final washup. "Slim, thing* have been so tough, I bcicha if they took a blood teat of me right n«w it would come out "0 per cent coffee and doughnuts and the rest hamburger." Slim chuckled. “Aw, we'll stagger into another lucky streak one us these days," he comforted hi* gloomy companion. But what good would it do If they did, he wondered. Money they won was like so many beer ehecks to be tossed right back over the bar es chance. What the mutual* missed, the bookies got. Slim waa like that—restless. Once Slim had parlayed a shoestring into a pair of spats. He ran his roll up to 11.000 and then, in one grandiloquent swoop, tossed it off on a 12 to 1 shot that's still running. “What price on the little sunbonnet girl in the black euit?" demanded Snapper, nodding toward Heather. Unobserved by the girl. Slim's ?uick eye took in her lithe figure rom head to to* “Odd»-on." he replied with conviction. “About three to five. I'd say.” And Slim never hung out a generous price on any lady. “Ten to on* in my book," ehot beck Snapper. “But mebbe I'm prejudiced. You know how I like 'em." “They're all about the same,” Slim said with an indifferent ehrug. But Slim caught himself slowing
