CHAPTER XXXV So Mike and Mr. Rrgan, Sr . started out that bright Oct-bor morning to see Manhattan. They went down u> the Battery first where the sight of the Statue of Liberty recalled to Mr. Regan hia honeymoon trip, many years ago. It was not until they stood at «unset on top of tbe Empire State Building and looked down across Manhattan to the harbor that Mr Reran again spoke of hi* wife. ■You've taken her place with Larry. Hl never forgo* what you did for my boy." "You're kind, Mr. Regan." "Na He couldn’t have neromphvhcd what he ha* without you.” Mr. Regan paused for a moment. "I wanted you to know how I felt. 1 hope thing* will be all right for you and Larry some day.” They rod* back down to Mike's apartment through lhe twilight which was deep purple. She bought all the afternoon newspaper* at the corner near th* apartment. Mr. Regan went to hi* apartment to rest before dinner. ... Mike paced the little sitting room next door. What had Wish done with Iris? She glanced through th* paper*. There was nothing. Just stuff about the game and picture* of Handsome, 14 Inches deep. It was almost seven when Handpome telephoned: “Dont worry. I'm fine. I'm with Ace." His voice reassured the girl. “I can’t have dinner with you and Dad. Yen take him te some nice place. I'm staying with Barnes; will see you and Dad to-
morrow!" • • • There was no sleep for Mike that night. Next morning thing* were no better. She was so nervous she eould have screamed. Handsome telephoned about 11 o'clock. His father answered, for Mike was downstairs at the mail box. She was hoping there would be some written word from Wish. It was awful not knowing what was going to happen when so much threatened... . Handsome did not talk long, and Mr. Regan hung up before Mike eame back. She was so restless, she suggeoted thst they leave early for the stadium, eat lunch near the park, and not have to worry about the taxi or subway jama So for two hours, Mike and Handsome'* father watched the crowds come spilling up out of the subway and rush for the stadium. Hand some Larry Regan * name wa* on all lips- His Yankee team was a heavy favorite for the first day** game just because he was pitching When Mike and Mr. Reg*n finally took their bog seats in back of tbe Yankee dugout, the tension of ths crowd was terrific. A band was playing “Sidewalks of New York." The bleacher crowds were singing. Then they started calling for Handsome. Mr. Regan'* eyes ware bright He put hit hand through Mike’s arm. “Hear them!" “Ye». they've always loved tarry, even when he was down on hi* luck.” It wax almost game time. There seemed to bo but one empty seat and that was next to Mike. Maybe that seat was for Wish -Malone. But. no, * stranger finally took it Arrow the way, Carol Lee waved to Mike. Sb* had just come in with Mrs. Barn**. Carol was looking brilItenu She raised her hand, her fingers crossed. Mik* nodded and smiled. -Sh* aonderod about Carol and Dusty, hoped that everything was aU right between them now.

He looked tired, thinner; but be smiled into her eyes; then he greeted Mr. Regan with real pleasure. "Thank tbe Lord, I got her* for a couple of innings!" He set tied brm self to enjoy the next twenty min utoe. Handsome'* team bad been in the lead all tbe way but it was ob. so cJotc! “Doing well tea t he?” Wish mur mured. “Yee. but—but—" There was little time for talk. A Yankee error helped tie the score in the eighth toning. Even Mik* forS>t her eagerness to talk to Wish aadsome seemed to be a little tired. The game went 10 inning*. But there is no use in going into details ... Everybody know* that Handsome beat Chicago 3 to t—came through with some of the finest ppching ever in tbe pinches. Hi* opening hit in the final inning led to
his making th* winning run. A* Mike stood there with Mr. Regan watching th* jubilant fans swarm over the diamond, a sharp r«m«mb*raM* of that other World'* Serie* came over her.
