“REDHEADS ARE LUCKY" by VfcRA. Brown
CHAPTER XXXlll In March. Mike splurged on elothex That was because of the Kenyon wedding. She had to go to several affairs givon for Bob and Ruth. At the wedding. Mike wore a smart black tailored suit. ... Her hat showed a large psrt of her gorgeous hair, and the dull black made her naturally lovely skin dazaHng, "Who's the redhead? Who's the redhead?” the men aakcri. "My secretary.** Kenyon answered. "First thing l*d do. Ruth, is to make Hob fire her.” advised Don Kaye, best man. who had taken possesaioß of Mike and ignored the maid of honor to whom he should have been charming. Ruth was gorgeous in her white wedding gown and so happy that it hurt Mike to look at her eyes Seeing Ruth that day. she knew Bob would never be sorry. They were going to Bermuda for just a short trip. "When summer comes and business drops off. we're going to England.** Ruth told Mike. “But first I m going to inswt that Bob gives you a vacation." “I wouldn't know what to do with it," Mike countered. “I’ll show you.” said Don Raye. "if you will let me." After they'd seen Ruth and Bob off, the younger members of the wedding party were ready for “more fun." Mike tried to make excuses. But Don refused to listen. They made the rounds. Don was amusing and Mike was thoroughly enjoying herself. Arriving at II Rommacco with the party, Mike went on into the dressing room to freshen up. She heard somebody call her name. “I thought you were dead or married or something!"C*rol Lee swept down upon Mike as she sat down before a dressing table mirror. “You look grand!" she rattled on. “Cant you join us? Who re you with?” Mike esplmned about her boss's wedding. "Dusty's away. Hell be in tomorrow with the team. I’m not going on the road trips any more. It got too boring, you know " Os course, Mike asked after Dusty. ‘ Better than ever. His arm's sweil." “Fm glad. Carol." "They all say nobody knows where Handsome ts. I had a letter from Iris, she's tn Honolulu." Carol's tone was lower now, mors confidenbal “She's opening here in a show nest August. She has a pretty good part. You know Handsome left her without a evnL” Mtke did not point out to Carol that it take* money to get from New t oric to Honolulu. That was about all the news Carol had Dine to impart. When Mike went to join the others at their table she saw Caro! across tbe room at a table for two. She was with Frank Ralston. Mike could never forget his face. Mike sat eoueezed close to Don. listening to all the idle talk around the table. She was suddenly tired. Her thoughts turned toward the letter she had had fn»m Handsome: "You should see me. Skipper. I've got a base bail team. I'm a manager now. It's the kids from the tomtry school aero** the mad I never felt belter tn my life and. right now. I'm experiment .ng wtth tha' o'd curve I think I've got the stuff on It again. Mr. Christian says the hand ball 1 play is good for mo. and now and then. 1 feed the horse*, or run the sheep ”... How queer the letter seemed here in thia Mist and hrauand din. Was there really such a place of peace and fresh air and quiet? “Wha* are you thinking about, beautiful Don bent dowa tbs better to see her facm

Mike had been watehing Lee's face So that was tt! “Women are queer." Dusty hesitated and then resumed slowly: “Weil. I’ve got something to say to you." He leaned forward. “You’re still in love with Handsome aren't you?" Mike was silent. “You don't hare to answer." After a pause, hr asked: ' Mike, can i trust you?" “Yes." “My arm's bad. You knew what happened today. I've known it for a month. Ace won’t believe it. But it's true. What I came down here to tell you is. if you know where Hand , some is. if he's tn sny kind of shape, get him started this way.” Mike satched bis grey face. Suddenly Dusty rested his arms on the table and dropped his hsad oa them. His shoulders shook. “Mike. I'm sorry to be sueh a baby, but I'm licked.” “You eaat ba." Mike protested. “Why are you go sure?" “1 know it. Not this week, may be, or next. But this sc aeon. I can't face it," he groaned "My arm's going fast, it s almost gone. I—l— I'm eld!" Dusty was only M! Old! Yea. o-'d for big league baseball. Mike shf ered Dusty finally stood up. “I rpoke ray piece, .Skipper. You de what you can. Muni's the word te anybody." He even wagrred with Mr. Crisp that he would win tea games for tbe club on this basis: He'd get his rid salary if be succeeded; he would get but half his small new subtract if he failed' Day after day. Regan worked out with the club. Ace seemed to show little interest in what Regan was doing. But Randseme threw ail pride to the wind and asked Ace to observe hi* new curve and fart ball.
