Handsome reared himself oat of the ehalr and started toward tri*. "What do you mean, my hick is gene?” He thrust hie hand Into his pocket and brought out three pennies: “There’s my luck, sieur! Neither you nor anybody can take them away fmm me!" "Your luck! You're loot Are game straight'" "Yes. my lock' And I had it before 1 ever knew you." Iris's eyes biased. “I suppose it was that redhead!” She jumped up. “i know where those pennies came from n She gave them to you. Didn't she?" Iris was standing rinse to Handsome. "What if she did?" He swayed back and forth. Iris was beside herself with fury. She dashed at Handsome, grabbed the pennies from his hand. She rushed to the window and with a gesture threw them out of that twenty-fourth floor window, into Washington Boulevard below. For a moment Handsome was too stunned to move Then he rushed to the window. Iris had turned away, waa laughing at bias. For one ter rtble moment. Wish thought he ana! going to choke the girl. Han iscm*. stood there staring at her shallow, pretty face aflame with her tn-1 umph. When he finally spake, his l voice was quite sober, and he meant what he said. "I hate you completely and that eughly, and 1 shall never live with you again." That was all. H- turned from her to Wish. "Help me find those pennies " Handsome was breathing hard "If we don't. I'm licked I can! eomei back Hrip me. Wish!" Malone called the night manager and explained the ritastin*. Then Handsome and Wish went dawn to the ballroom floor and they watrbed while two bell bore d-mbed out onto the marquee. They got sash ! ghtx. and they hunted a long time. Search on the pavement briow had be-n futile. Handsom* was tn a highly excited state. Fever burned in hia face "We vg got to find them one cd them, anyway We've got to!" Handsome described them over and over. They were just ordinary pennies, with holes punched In them Small holes. Punches through the “O" that spelled out "On*." He waa like an insane man. Ralf the hotel staff joined in the seereh. For they all adored Handsome it went on for hours. A guest who was an engineer tried to figure out mathematically just where the penmes would have fallen. Finally, the night manager whispered orders to one of the bellboys. Half an hour later as th< des. perate search went on. Diek. the head bellboy eried out. "Guess I got one of 'em!" Handsome, leaning out of the ballroom wind ,w, heard and rushed down to the front door. Diek was on hia hands and knees in ths little parkway across the pavement where he had found one penny. Handsome. dropped down beside him, found a second «ne He was wild with gratitude. Wish tipped all tho boys, for Handsome had no money. Malone said. "Coma with me, star n my room tonight. I want to talk to you. anyway.” Handsome was clutching his pennies in his band They w.nt up to Wish's room Hand, mu- went over to the desk and a: ' v.n He eerutin.sed the cdNX Then be t nied on Malone "You u: l that. It was the last thing Iria eould do to hurt me. I'm ihrvugh. Wish." Malsae got him to finally. In the memtog. they'd talk tho Whele thing over sensibly As for Iris. W ish would recommend she be sent beek to New York MNMtway. In the morning, when Wish awakened, he leaked ever at Rand some's bed. It took all W iah’a persuasion to keep Manager Ace Bamea from suspend mg Handaome then and there The eporta writers had a little pnrato dinner that week for Hand some. It was in Cleveland. One by one. they etoed up and, instead of the usual testimonial speeches, they took Handsome apart. And ewek ended bis little speech: "You are stul the rreeteat pitcher ia the league, if youll behave yeuredf, leave liquor and women alone." Regan took It tike a eoldier. Rs was grate fu! to them.
