Il* insisted an taking Mik* for a short rid* after the diahoa were done. "Tomorrow night we’ll celebrate. Skipper. Swell dinner, just you and me. out on Long Island some place! Kiss me! Feel all right now?“ “Yea." “That’s good. Now well forget all our diffcrencee." in the day* to come Mike wondered if they could. ... There wa* no grand eeleoratlon the neat day. At noon. Handsome found Mike while she waa having a sandwich in the drug store. “Look!” He handed her a telegram from hi* father. It urged him to come home at once. His mother waa aerioualy ill. "Mike, I should have known when she didn’t eome down for the Sene* that something waa wrong.” Mike had never aeon Handsome ao completely shaken. "I’ll take the 3 o'clock plane for Detroit. Or I may be able to get a plane to Lansing.” He kissed her good-bye in the drug store. “IH run. Will write you tonight, or wire you, darling. I should be back in a week or ton days." But Handsome was not back so soon. Mik* wrote to him every day. lie wrote, now and then. It was obvious from hia letter* that thing* were bad at home. One morning, rarly, long before she waa up, a telegram came to the flat in Brooklyn. Handsome’a mother was dead. Mike s.iting there, shivering in the pal* morning light, wept not only for Handsome but for the woman she would never know. That night Mike stayed in town until nine thirty and telephoned Handsome in Charlotte. He seemed pleased to hear her voice. She did not go on to Charlotte because, when she suggested it. Handsome said it was not necessary. The day* crept on. Still Handsome did not come back to Manhattan. In each letter, there wa* so much to do, he hated to leave hi* father, etc. But the thing which finally brought him back into town waa the fact that hi* hand was bothering him again. He had tn see th* doctor about it at once. Handsome was du* that week end. Mik* was wild with joy. She bad a new eoat:’to wear with her good suit. And she thought the looked well. Her mother had made new curtains for the living room. Thursday, when the final sports edition* were brought in about four o'clock. Mike noted a daxaling blonde who smiled out from the front pan. She wa* very pretty. And above the picture it read: "It's Handsome'* (’ar.” And the type explained: “So the Judge Said It Waa All Right." Mike read the word* almost without realizing what they meant: Iri* Hansen, of th* Inferno Case, was given a traffic ticket for parking ia ni id-town yesterday afternoon. When she explained that the car was Handsome Regan'*, i'uat she wa* just doing an errand for the famous pitcher, Magistrate Mellow, a baseball fan. let dauling Mis* Hansen go with a warning.
