"REDHEADS ARE LUCKY " By Vera Brown.., —

CHAPTER XVIII "My girl works at a place called the Inferno. Did yea *v*r hear of it?'* th* old lady went on. "Y*x, l‘v» heard as IL" Mike looked at th* lined face. It mu*t have been eery beaatffal, for even Row til* eye* were «till a deep blu*. "Your daughter look* Ilk* you?" abo naked kindly. Th* old woman beamed "She look* Ilk* I used to. She's real beautiful." the mother added complacently. "You should ae* some of th* pletur** of herself she send* aae. They're aa Mg aa thia." The old woman atretched out h*r arm* to indicate the aia*. Mik* aauld visualise th* photographs, probabl* vastly different than then* which appeared in front of the Inferno “Yea, my girl waa always beautiful. I've worried a lot about her. She went down to South America once and married. I never saw him. She left him in Buenos Aires and came horn*. So, j m glaJ things are going so well for her? Mike eat silent, thinking of th* “glamour girl*’ at th* Inferno Case whose mother ant her* besid* her. “You've never been to New York?" *h* asked. “No. I d like to go. but I can't l*av* her father. H* isn't wail. W* were married young, we went to school together out in Kansa* In Pretty. Did you ever hear of it?" "You mean the name of the town h Pretty?" "Ye*. th* boy* used to say our town wa* rightly named, that my sister and I helped to give it ita name.” Th* old lady rambled 0a.... Mik* onlv half heard what ah* •aid. Her thoughts were elsewhere. She looked at her watch. It waa four-thirty, tt she walked back, she'd get to th* drug star* just •bout in time to meet Carol. Th* old woman waa loath to Jet her go. Mike finally left, walking faster now, as she approached the hotel... . At home her mother would be getting supper in th* stuffy apartment Jimmie would be restless waiting for the family to com*. He should have her yesterday’s letter by this time. At th* drug store. Carol was nowhere to be seen. Mike climbed on a stool and bought a soda. That would take up some time. It wa* after dv*. Mik* hoped Carol would not be late. She did set dare go up to th* hotel apartment without her. Aa Mike finished the last drop of her sods slowly, a familiar voice spoke her name: "What are you doing here?" It was Dusty. Mik* thought fast. "I came here to get a carton of cigarettes for Handsome." Mike hoped Dusty did not notice her eonfusion. "Com* on, Caro! will probably be waiting for us,” he said. Mike got up slowly. Then to her horror, through the doorway walked Carol. She was beaming, had on an orchid corsage. “Hello, you two. What is this, a rendezvous?” Carol's poise waa perfect. Certainly it waa better than Mike’s. Dusty glowered at Carol. "Whero have you been?" h* demanded “Now don't make a seen* here, dueling. Let's wait till we get up to th* suit* for the brawl. Coma oa, you two.” She *wept them before Mike's cheeks were burning. In the apartment she went straight to her bedroom, closed the door. She could hear Dusty’s angry voice, and Carol’s cool laughter. To her great relief there waa no violent quarrel. Carol had managed to quiet his suspicions. Mike freshened her face, fixed her hair, waited for Handsome'* call. He wa* late tonight. Maybe he was tired of having her trail along with him all the tim*. The phone rang It «ss almoet seven. But when she heard his voice at last, she was ready to weep from sheer nervnn«w**s. 'Tv* found a new place for us fn eat. Skipper,” ho shouted. “Hurry! Hl meet you in the lobby. Shake Durty and Carol. They ; »am «ol din* In th* loyal mite.”

When Mike eame out of her room, th* done into the living room of the L»e suite wa* open. Th* waller was just leaving with their dinner order and Dusty was alon*. Carol waevidwntly driaatag "Aren't you ami Handsome going to eat with ua?** Duaty asked. "Not tonight, thanks Handsome want* to gs to a new restaurant b*'s fonnd." Dusty laughed "Bring him back up her*, there ero some penpie Mining In late*." Mike Mid ah* would Duaty got up and came to the door. He stood looking down into Mike’s fresh young face: "I like you kid," h* said suddenly. Tm glad You and Carol have been so kind to me." He brushed that and*. "1 don’t want to sm you making any mis takes." "What do you mean?" Dusty grinned: “Fm an old hand. Skippar. lie used Handsome * pet name for her. "I like you and I like that crasy mug you're engaged to. Don't want to *e* you get started Mik* dM not on tiers-and She tanked up at him unentnprrhendingly He patted her shoulder: "I won’t tell mi you this time. But I don’t want Carol getting mixed up tn any such »tuff. Hsndsome would blame her. You r* too nke a kid to two-time anybody. Remember?" Mik* waa sp**chl*** for a moment. "HI remember,” she managed. He gave her a littl* hug. pushed her out of the door and shut it. Mike leaned against the wan as ah* waited for th* elevator. So that waa what Carol had told Dusty! How did ah* daro? Sudden anger swept the girl. Her knee* were trembling when th* *lerator door Anally opened. Th* ear wa* full, but Mike squeesed into it. Only when she met Handsome a few moments later did she realise just how successful her new clothes were “You look wonderful” HandMine’s voice was flat. “I didn't know you were so beautiful.” It was as though he were talking to a stranger. to somebody he had met for the first time But there was no time for esplanntkm* They went on out to th* restaurant, the new ' diseovery" which Handsome had made down the street. When they faced each other across the little table for two which Handsome chos*. he went on: “Do you know, It's funny, but I think I just always took you for granted." “What an awful thing to say!" Mika refused tn be sertau*. "I mean It. I didn't know before you were beautiful. I thought you were juat a nie* girl." “Am I not stdl a nice girir Handsome was silent trying to find an answer. “You aren't serious, are you?" Mik* said. "I am!" h* persisted "T don’t trust beautiful women.” He was so naive about it that Mite* could not find it in her he*rt to quarrel with him. She smiled and put out her hand: “AB right, darling, from now on, Hl wear my old dothw." Her voice wa* so sincere, her smil* so genuin* that Handsome felt suddenly ashamed. "I didn't mean It really. Skipper. But you ju»t startled m*.“ Sevaral times as they were eating. Mike looked up to find Handsome regarding her ae though sh* wer* a stranger. Had tee heard gneaip? F.aeh time Mik* resolved to tell him about Carol and that afternoon, tail him what Dusty b-lwved. But ah* hesitated. Mik* tried to remember •Il the things about which Wish had warned her. There were still two mor* week* of travel mi the road She must be careful. There must be no quarrels, and Handsome might say something to Dusty. •Why m thoughtful" Hnxtaomo I «sked her eudrtenly. I “Jwt thinking about homo.

Larry," She wa* horrified at how easily th* ll* eame to her lip*. N*wr again would ehe allow Caro! to put her in thi* ptwition! Sh- d make that plain tomorrow just b*tween the two of them. Fortunately for Mike. Handaom* wanted to tala shop and sh* encouraged him tonight with a feeling of disloyalty for *h* heard hardly on* word hw said. "it look* a* though we'd com* off thia road trip with the pennant in our pocket..." He wa* too engrossed to notice Mike’* preoccupation any mor*. "Had a letter from mother today..." He threw th* ■query whit* *av*lope over to .Mike. Sh* want* us to com* out homo and be married before Christmae." They eat over dinner n long time talking about their plans; Mike forgot all about her trouble* until it waa tim* to leave: "Dusty wanted you to stop at th* suite, they have people coming .. .“ Handsome groaned. "No that’* out tonight! I want to ae* a movie and eatch some sleep. I may have to pitch tomorrow." “What shall ! tell them? I can't get Into my room without their teeing m*.” "Tell them I’m *iek, that I'v* broken a leg. that I've gon* to China .. . I don’t care what you tell them .. .|ts*t so I don’t have to be there. Dusty knows he won't have to work tomorrow ... let him carry on a* he lik*»." '■They’ll probably make me com* In ..." "That’s your job. Skipper, nowadays," Handsome retorted coolly. "Just keep the pack off mr. I’m a working man!" He grabbed her arm and hurried her down the street to the nearest movie. Tho film amused Handsome for a while. In the middle of it. he decided he'd had enough. A* they sauntered back to th* hotel, Handsome gave Mike's hand a aqueeae. “You’re a darling. Most girl* would make a fuss. It'* too bad yon can't get away from thi* party tonight, but a* long as you're traveling with them, you're hooked.” He smiled down at her: “Next year, kid. it wul be different..." With lagging steps Mike said good-night, went en sp to the Lee suite. A* she came down the hall, sh* could hear voire* and laughter •nd the radio going full blast. If she opened the door into the t oy. r quietly, she might bo able to slip into her bedroom unnoticed. But it wa* a fal** hop*. The moment she earn* into the *ma'! hailway, she heard Dusty's voice shouting: “Come on in, we're waiting for you. Where’s Handsome?" he added when he saw she wa* alone. "He went on to bed..." "The laxv good-for-nothing..." Dusty reached for the t»l»pnonc, and naked the operator to ring Handsome’* room. But Handsome wa* quite prepared. He’d had al) call* shut off. "I’m going down ther* and pull that mug out!" Dusty in dressing gown and slippers, started toward the half. It took the combined effort* of everybody in the room to dissuade him. Carol finally resorted to tears before he promised to take another drink instead. “You'r* making a sissy of that guy!" Dusty accused Mike. In al! this turmoil there wa* no opportunity to introduce Mik* to any of the guest* who were stranger* to her. On* of them set out to make himself agreeable to the redhead. He turned out to be Frank Ralston, a Chicago attorney. Mike tried to appear a* though she were having a pleasant time. In spite of Dtußy’i efforts to make her try Scotch, she drank only n little gingerale. “I heard you were lovely. Min Shannon," Ralston wa* saying. “I saw your picture* in th* paper thi* week, but it didn't -Io you justice."
