Don't worry about a thing." “It doesn't seem fair to you. Mr. Downey.” Downey only laughed and urged her te hurry. He did not explain that the dub would look after him. Shortly Mike found herself out on the street breathless. Iter puree with 450 00 clutched in her hand. She had to have another pair of shoes. It was almost one o'clock She should get a dress or a suit or something. The white linen would not do for September. Frantic, she tried to figure just what would be absolutely necessary purchases When she esm, out of th. .tor!: it waa 3 o'clock. She was hot and faint. She'd had no lunch. DesCrate, she climbed into a eab with r packages She eould not face etruggi'ng with ths bundles in tho subway. And she felt guilty about such extravagance. When she finally walked into the apartment. Jimmie was resting and •o was her mother. She camo in like s summer cyclone, dumped her purchases on tho table, and the words tumbled out of her mouth. "What about my old coat, mother?” she called. “And is there a decent looking suit ease?" The little apartment was sudden*
ly turned into a madbouaa. Mrs. Shannon got to work on the new black frock, and Mika began throw. Ing out clothes from the dresser drawers. It waa Mrs Wheeler from serosa the Loll who saved the day for Mika. She came in, learned the situation and went to work pressing the spring coat She loaned Mike a respectable looking suitease. too. During all this Mike had to give instructions about money. There were certain tails which must be met. Then Jimmie had to have everything explained to him He was so excited, his pinched little face burned hot with fever, end Mike's heart sank. Maybe, she shouldn't leave him. But her mother overruled her: “Go, it will do you good." There was a little money in the old broken teapot where her mother hid away extra dollars. Mike gave her everything she had except five

It waa hard, - saying good-bye to Jimmie, but finally she got out of tho bouse on schedule. Mrs. Wheeler pressed one of her sons into service to drive I Miks over to Grand Central. t At tho station, Mike could see no. . body she knew. She was a little ahead of Ums. Wish came, found t her, forlorn, with her two bags and i her hat bos and he thought he'd i never seen a prettier picture. He sent her luggage on the train to Carol Lh'i drawing room, and then I waited for the rest of the gang. Aeo Barnes earns early. It eras the first time Mike had ever met the famous catcher-manager, and she waa shy. i "Thanks for coming." was an he said as ho shook her hand. Mike was sure he hardly saw her. He was distraught and worried. Then , Handsome came swinging down the stops on a half run for the gate. “Larry!" Wish's voice halted him. “She's going!" Handsome's face, when he heard the news, waa payment enough for Mike's panic and worry. Carol and Mike were busy opening packages in the Lee suite in a Chicago south shore hotel. The pile of packages was the result of their first day's shopping trip. With trembling fingers Mike undid the big box which held her new suit. “It's beautiful!" the girl said, her eyes shining aa she held up the '
. jacket “Not bad for |SB 50.” Carol ad ! mitted. “I shouldn't have let you talk me into spending that much on it. I can’t afford it" “Nonsense! The dub's got to pay the bill, anyhow. You've gvt to look decent" . Carol had been furious when Aee Barnes had broken the news to her that she must chaperon Mike. But now she found the girl amusing Besides, Carol liked anybody whom she eould teach something about clothes, and Mika waa a likriy pupil The telephone rang As Card got up to answer it. Miks, still on her knees, stared ruefully at the suit ’Pread out over a big overstaffed ehair. Ito elegance was beyond Mike's wildest dreams. It was simple with a simplicity which, Mike had learned, coat money. No doubt Carol knew clcthes! . Dusty doesn’t see only what I want him to too. Besides. I watch the telephone like a hawk. Have to." She sighed deeply. “Women are fools and it’s up to each of us to fight. Nobody is ever going to cut in on Dusty!" Mike waa amused. The four days traveling with th, club had left bar gssping.... Carol was a constant surprise. Mike Wied at the thought of how slender Carol ordered big Dusty Lee about. And how he obeyed' UPP<r It was close to lunch time. Mike went back to the contemplation of the suit while Carol commented • “Yee, it's good. It looks like something. We must get you a de-

I have tol Now get ready and well go hat hunting. We can piek up a bite " Tho two were ol? a little after noon Tho hat waa bought and put on Mika's pretty head by one o'clock. Carol seemed restless. “Now, honey, I want you to do something for me. I've got some business to attend to. It’s a personal matter. Be a good girl and run along.” Carol waa watching Mike's unsuspecting face. “I'll meet you some place at 6 o'clock," Carol added. “But I must be back at the hotel by the time Handsome comes.” "I know. So must I, for Dusty. Now Mike, you know everybody wants a little time to themaelvce. It's Just that Dusty is jealous of evsry thing 1 d 0... ■ Carol's eyes faltered under Mike's direct gaze. "Where do you want me to meet you?" Mike asked without further comment Her voice was cool and unruffled, but it cut off any confidences. “11l meet you by 4:14 in the eutrate drug store down the street from the hotel. O. K ? Don't be late." Then Mike and Carol parted.. Mike walked along Michigan boulevard. The beautiful day, her lovely clothes were suddenly spoiled
fer her. She liked Carol. She liked ■ Dusty and she hated being involved in any deceit She knew quite well • that it was not a business appeintI ment which Carol was keeping. Mike looked very modish as she ’ swung along, thinking such un- : happy thoughts. Never in her short life had she had such fine clothes, • never had she looked as stunning Never had she been as disturbed, so restlessly unhappy, so unsuie. Carol frightened her. Mike headed down toward the lake. She could not resist it, it looked so clean. Memories of painful acenes between Carol and Dusty kept coming to her mind, blotting out the picture of the deep blue water ahead. Since Mike s room was attached to their suite, it was impossible for her not to know when they quarreled. For it was often And she waa appalled at the amount of liquor they and their friends consumed. “And they have everything . . , why should they be like that?’ Mike wondered helplessly. Handsome had kept his promise. One glass of bwr was his quota these days. He did not seem to mind it She walked for a long time. Nurses and children were out, and when school had recessed, older boys and girls came, walking in threes and fours. Mike liked Chicago. She sat on a bench. After a while, a nice old lady came and sat down there, too. Mike was amused at the old woman’s efforts to get her into conversation. She would have much preferred to think her own thoughts. But the old lady was so eager, apparently ao lonely for somebody to talk to. that Mike eould not ignore her need “Do you live in Chicago?" was the first question. “No, I live in New York." “You do? My daughter lives in Jvo* York. The old woman's face lighted up. “She’s such a pretty girt. She's going right well, too. But I wish she'd come home to visit." “She's been gone a long time?" Mike asked for the lack of anything else to aay. “Four yearn. She promised to come home last Christmas, but she couldn’t get away from her job.
