He waved at Harper, standing up in front of the dugout, but Mike did not see thaL The boys were trotting out to take their positions for play. Mike sat rigid, her hands cieadied in her '‘Handsome camo last. Over in the bleachers there was a roar. "They like him.” Wish tnurIt was the first time Mika had ever seen Handsome in uniform. It was plain why, from the first, the sports writer* had found the proper Nickname for Larry. He were that uniform with an air; it had been tailored deftly to bis tall, broad shouldered figure. Handsome stepped onto the pitching mound. The hot afternoon sunshine poured over the green of the diamond. The grandstands were a blot of black shadow with yards of blurred white faces. Ace went out and spoke to his new pitcher. Handsome glanced their way. “Can he see ns?" "Sure. He ean see year red hair. Couldn't miss!" Wish mumbled, latent on the scene before them. The game was on. The first ball Handsome. pitched was a strike. The batter missed. Mike relaxed a little. Wish satmotionlcM . . . The first inningl When it eras over. Mike's forehead was damp and she took off her gloves and wiped her hands on her hankerchief. “1 can't stand it!” she moaned. Wish did not even turn hla head. Handsome had got through the first half of that inning finally. No score. But the tsnaion had been terrific. He was uncertain, nervous He kept getting into diScultiee thnt seemed impossible of solution. But ho aqueeaed through with luck end come fine fielding. The bleacher crowds were roaring. so relieved were they to get that half inning finished without disaster. As the boys earns back to the dugout Ace walked beside Hand some, talking to him. Handsome looked up. saw Mike just before he stepped down into the dugout Ho waved at her, and she felt terribly elated. Mr. Jeniuns was polishing his glasses vigorously. Then they all began to talk at onee. For a moment the tension was gone. "A dangerous team, Detroit! They're our only worry. W’e’ea got to liek them," Wish said, “that ia, if we’re going to stay in the psans nt race. Dusty's been the only boy who could do it" Detroit wss out in the field. Aos led off the betting far New York. The gang from the west was not any too settled today. Their pitcher was a veteran, tired, strugg irg But ho wax smart. At the eno of the first iaaing. the score stoud nothing to nothing. Wish teak out a cigar and I gbted IL Handsome, askew a kvd out onto the field, seemed ro -!;'■■•» I end u> ruffled. A heavy hitler waa coming up The men on bases war* taking long Icmlb. Handsome pitched two balls in succession. A groan swept the crowds. The next waa a strike. The crowds yelled again But the next was a ball. “He’s been behind the batter evary Uma,” Jenkins said in quiat despair. Aca left his place and went out to talk to Handsome again. It waa a brief conference. Handsome stretahad, a graceful sight to set as his arm came up in a flash in the bright afternoon sun. Against th* green of the diamond, ho loomed as heroically as a Diuy Dean “fogging 'em through." “Only a mireele can got him out ot thia mere,” a fan aitUt« ia the next box cried. It waa Strike Two. Mike could see Ace run forward to Handsome. When Handsome finally came back to the dugout ho grinned up at Mike. So wont the game through the long afternoon. At the seventh Inning whoa everybody stood up to

Wish looked down at Mike's pinched fare “I sen t stand it Wish! It's aw* fail I didn't realias!” "It's aa excitiag game, isn’t it?" ho grinned. "Listen, child. I've been doing this for thirty-fire years and I’m still elire. Taiko it easy. He’s all right" It eras a good inning for Randsome, and ho tamed in a workmanlike job. Mike was beaming. To* Marvin was first up to bat in the last of the seventh. He got to first base. The man following him was out, but Marvin got to second. Dick Huesing hit a long fly so far Mt to right that it advanced Marvin to third. Then it was Handsome's turn at bat. “Here's a shance for him to win his own ball gama." Jenkins said. Mike closed her eyes again. Handsome had upt hit safely yet. Wuh was mumbling to himself. The Detroit .boy* didn't realize Handsome could hiL There might be e chanre. Like a veteran. Handsome refused to be fooled. He waited Then the Detroit pitcher Cre him a good ball. Mike could er the bat hit the ball, she opened her eyes wide. It was a niee clean hit—not long, but It brought Tom Marvin home, for the first score of the day. You should hare beard the crowds. Mike's eyes were so blurred with tears she eould not see clearly.
