Although the union appeared ready for an Immediate strike, reports among its members indicated that, even If the company continues In Its refusal to rehlre the stewards, the walkout would not be forthcoming fur al least ten days. Union members reported, with out confirmation, that James 8 Dewey. MOVIE STRIKE IS THREATENED Screen Actors Guild Threatens Strike In Movie Studios Vnion Air Terminal. Burbank Cal.. Aug 9 — <U.R) — A million ’ dollar cargo of movie stars flew east today bearinx the threat of a strike which might ultimately darken every movie theater in AI merica. They demand a settlement, on their terms, of one of the moat complicated battles In union labor I annals "If we don't win the argument.” said president Ralph Morgan of the Screen Actor’s Guild, leader of the flying delegation. “I wouldn't he surprised if then- was a strike In the movie studios” Racing to New York hiIH thence to the American federation of labor meeting at Atlantic City by chartered plane were, besides Morgan. such other executives of the highest paid labor union in the I world as Edward Arnold. Btunie Barnes. Jean Muir. Lucille Glea- - non. Wayne Morris. Henry Hull, Miacha Auer, and Steers. They will arrive in New York at - 4:30 o’clock this afternoon and will I proceed to Atlantic City tomorrow 1 to tell president William Green of the AFL that they consider the transfer of an allied organisation to the jurisdiction of the stage hands' union “a case of kidnaping.” “A plain case.” Morgan said as he climbed aboard the plane here last night. "And if we don't win ' the argument in Atlantic City 1 . wouldn't be surprised if there was a strike In the movie studios. We ! are plt-dged to fight with <fv«-ry means at our command and while ; 'strike' la an ugly word, it sometimes is an effective plan of action." The fight has more angles and plots snd counter-plots than a detective story. "It's so doggone mixed up that the public probably will never understand." said John Garfield, who ' wanted to make the trip but had to stay home and make movies. H've been talking myself blue in the face trying to explain It to the actors themselves, most of thnm don’t even understand. Most of them are too Interested In their own careers to be much concerned about abstract justice.'’ Stripped of all the aide Issues, the battle bods down to the fact that the American federation of actors has been granted a charter Iby the International alliance of ’theatrical stage employees I’rev- ' loualy the federation was u part of the associated actors and artists Os America — and the screen guild demands that it be returned to that sponsorship. I As Morgan put it: what does a stage hand know about the problems of an actor? With theatrical foresight the guildsmen made their plane takeoff as spectacular as a movie premier They set up 11 studio floodlights so camermen could get good pictures They even provided highballs tor the photographers. Some 2.01 H) people about bait wearing screen guild ribbons thronged the airport. Among them J <
