INDIANA'S STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM: While Indiana's state highway i system has tripled in mileage since 192<i. the mileage of high-type surface is five times as great now as it wss 20 years ago, figures reveal. When the original state highway system was established, it included 3,191 miles of roads. On January 1, 1939 the State Highway System Included over ten thousand ’ I miles of roads, an Increase of more ’ - than 300 percent in mileage. in the first state highway system. ; there were 1,034 miles of high type | surface and 2.156 miles of inter- ' mediate and low-type surfaces. 1 ' Now there are 5,639 miles of high- ' , type surface and 3.981 miles of inII termediate and low-type surfaces. l ' Thia represents a 500 percent In- ' 11 crease in the mileage of high-type I i surface with an increase of less ' I than 200 percent in the mileage of
intermediate and low-type surfaces. Two of the interesting comparisons between the original state ‘ highway system and the present ( system are provided In the mile- | ; age of cement concrete and gravel 1 I - roads In 1930 there were 96, . miles of roads in the state system i surfaced with cement concrete; to- ' i day there are 4.317.51 miles of ce- | , ment concrete roads in the state < I highway system. On the other hand, in 1930 there were 1.7*1 mil- ] .ea of gravel roads in the state i highway system, while today there ’ , are but 330 miles of gravel roads , •in the state highway system. In J 1930 there were 330 miles of earth J roads marked as state highways , I hut today there are no roads of 1 I this type in the system. These comparisons indicate, the I progress whic h Indiana has been I I msking In the development of a \ modern state highway system. In | 1930 less than 33 per cent of the slate highway system had a high- , type surface while now nearly *0 I . percent of the total mileage has a ! high-type surface. Aside from the ( improvement in highway surfaces, < constant improvement has been ' made on the system by eliminating I sharp curves and grades, widening the surface and the convenience and safety of motorists using the state highways. o ■ * TWENTY YEARS * AGO TODAY * • Aug 1-cLoeatlon of the tuberculosis hospital will be decided at Bluffton the l»th R.
