“Young Fella, I Remember t\ Ol W ay Back When”... HE’S an old-timer. He remembers the Panic of *93. When Dewey \s> , \ was victorious at Manila Bay, he was in the crowds that whooped ' it up with some high-wide-and-handsome celebrating. Teddy was waving the big stick while he, and men like him, were leading / heated discussions around cracker barrels up and down the counk try. Yes, and he can remember when it took a day to drive to Fort i'■* W’ayne, and a trip that modern autos and paved roads have shaved down to mere minutes. You’ll find lots of old timers around town. He will recall some of the difficulties of financing, too. When buying a “gold brick” seemed to be an inseparable part of a good many transactions. He recognizes the First State Bank for what it is and has been through the last 56 years a vital force in shaping and improving the financial stability of Decatur and this community. Today, this bank stands as a monument to the sound conservative policy established by its founders and continued by their successors. It is as much his friend today as it was 56 years ago when it was begun by Dr. T. T. Dorwin and other pioneers of this community.

fortunes i aren’t built in a day ftp »» Success requires steady planning from childhood to old age. It is a bank's duty to extend financial help and advice at every stage of life for “AS THE TWIG IS BENT THE TREE IS INCLINED." Our responsibility begins with childhood. It is our duty and has been our policy to furnish every encouragement to opening of savings accounts by children or for children by their parents. A thrifty community depends upon the teaching of thrift to the children. In our 56 years of business we have also furnished a service of savings accounts, small loans and advice which have helped many young couples to embark upon a life of happiness and success. Our experience has been theirs for the asking and has helped them avoid many financial pitfalls. Mindful that in home ownership lies the greatest asset to Decatur, we have for years helped many couples finance new homes through direct mortgage loans and more recently through FHA insured loans. We are completing a study of legislative changes in the FHA program and are prepared to give prospective builders or remodellers constructive advice on procedure. Our services have been extended to both industry and commerce in the community. Conservative loans made by this bank have reaped rich harvests of wages and profits in the community. In old age. our bank is a pillar in a storm. Having weathered the financial ups and downs of 56 of the most turbulant years in the history of America, we are prepared to advise investments designed to provide suitable incomes for retirement.
