SYNOPSIS On her 25th birthday. Antoinette Goddard, <• lovely San Francisco debutante, awakens with a fesling of great happiness. The cause of It was her fiance, Brock Milbank, scion of the prominent west coast Milbanks. Toni felt Battered that ths eligible Brock loved her when he could have had the pick of Society’s debutants* Jessica Payne, an unscrupulous blond, mads no secret of bis attraction for her. Even though Brock did not encourage Jessica, Toni was jealous of her. At the breakfast table, the news that her father had gone bankrupt did not affect Toni deeply "What was money compared with .over she thought "Besides, when she and Brock were married they could help mother and dad.** Toni had a luncheon date with Brock. He had not telephoned so she wondered if be knew of their changed financial status. Waiting for him in a hotel lobby, Toni Is touched when one of her friends greets her with: “I’m frightfully sorry. Toni I You could have knocked me down with a feather! I fust saw It in the papers. It’s an awfully raw deal." The girl stared in amazement when Toni replied: “Every cloud has its silver lining and l**e got mine thead of me." CHAPTER IV One o’clock. Five after on* Ten after. One-fifteen. Was it her Imagination, or were acquaintances—girts and boys she knew casually—avoiding her as she aat in the kibby of the hotel where she had been wont to entertain so lavishly 7 e Avoiding her, and then looking over at her surreptitiously, whispering about bar, some with pitying kooks and sums with thinly veiled sneers. Did the loss of one’s money mean, to quickly, the loss of prestige and »f so-called friendship? Were they afraid she might try to borrow from them? That she war hem without an invitation, trying to horn In oa a luncheon or something? Toni’s head went high, and two red spots burned In the clear pallor of her cheeks. The lobby was emptying now. She felt conspicuous She'd walk over to the newsstand. Glance at the paper* If Brock didn't come in another five minutes, birthday or no birthday, ahe would leave. On the front page of the CallBid It tin were eye-compelling headlines: "Young San Fsancisco Blusblood Euiecs with Chicago Divorces." Het gaze flew to the lower caption. froze to the ghastly words that teemed to grow bigger and more terrible before her eye*. Her world crashed about her! "Brock Hdbank and Jszzica Payne Jfamed Tku Hartung in Santa Barbara." she read. It wasn't truei There must be some horrible mistake! It couldn't bo true! Brock had a cousin In Santa Barbara His name was Jeffrey Milbank Why. there had been a mixup! A silly misprint, of course! Brock was engaged to her. Antoinette Goddard! He was so fins, so true, so devoted, it was utterly impossible that he could do this thing to her I But the headlines dancing before ner eyes, a warning inner voice, a terrifying voice, reminded her that, the world over, it had happened thousands of limes before.

Or to the ladies’ lounge, where she could hide while reading what lay below the headline* But ehe was terrified to read It! She felt the com passionate eyes of the gtri In rharg* of ths news-atsnd on her. remembered that this very girl must have seen Brock end herself meeting here, innumerable time* Her fingers fumbled In her pocketbook for the pennies to pay for the paper. Couldn’t find them. Bhndly she flung down a quarter, and without waiting for the change, hurried out of the lobby and into a i taxicab. She stammered to the driver: I “Fisherman's Wberf, plan**"

Aa the taxi bounded forward, she drew a deep breath. Courage! Where was it now? Afraid to read a paper? Her heart thumping, aba found the column. “The eurpriae wedding in Santa Barbara thia morning of the beautiful Jessica Payne of Chicago to Broek Milbank, only I eon of the John Pierce MU banks of San Francisco. will be of great interest to aociety uot only oa the Pacific coast, bet throughout the Middle West. “The bride. who resumed her > maiden name aftei her recent Reno divorce and inheritance of one-fifth of the Payne estate from bar late grandfather, met the groom during her three months' stay in San Francisco, during which time many parties were given tn her honor. > “Thia reporter, on calling on the happy couple thia morning, : decided that Jessica undoubtedly la the moot beautiful bnde i| of the season. Orient, the couple will make their home in San Francisco." There was a sickening, emother. Ing sensation in Toni's chest She slumped back in the seat, closing her eye* Was this death?—ehe asked herself. No, it was worse than death I Death was forgetfulnes* A quiet slipping away from the world and Ito horror* But pain tore at her heart like the daws of a tiger. Brock! Her Brock, who had told her he adored her! Married! There was no rancor yeL Only shock. And agonizing pain. Why had he done this to her, knowing bow she loved him? The pitying look* whisperings in
i the lobby of the hotel, earns back to her. Explained now, in the light of I thia appalling cataclysm. How ho i had humiliated bar But, the motive? Where was the motive?—she wondered. Why, over and over in her presence, be had laughed at Jessica Payne! Laughed at her background, her splash of money, her ostentation. Condemned her flashy clothes, her showincM. Had it ell been a blind, to hide hie real attraction to her? Toni wondered. To puli the wool over her eyes? But no, ho had really loved his fiancee Else why propose to her? Be so devoted? Perhaps his own family, as that morning dad had suggested, was hit too. That being so, they tad brought pressure to bear on Brock, maybe, urging a wealthy marriage on him in preference to marrying a girl whoso family had lost their money The Milbank*. Sr. were workßy people, who bad long since lost the idealism of youth But whatever the reason, nothing made it bearable.
