CHAPTER XXXIII Her face stiff with smiling, Marie hovered between the roesta and the kitrhen. It was almost two, and they'd **p*ct tn have dinner right on the dot. Was the roast beef done T Maybe she should have put it in sooner. Th* Wilsons, showing th* effects of waiting uncalled for. arrived with Edward, at last “What do you hear from Bee?” Jessie asked. "Oh, she's OLting along fine." “Weill That's nfce," Ada said. "I told Clem, it wasn't as If she was a real young girL 1 guess she's old enough to know her own mind, I •aid. I said, if she's not going to marry, then I guess the place for a career is New York. That's what they say. And I told Clem's cousin, Mis' MeUger, I said. Bee's always been a good girl. I never heard of Mattie having any trouble with her. 1 said if you raise your children right—" Mrs. Wilson said, "She'* got dinner ready, I think. Edward, find out. are wo supposed to sit down ?" Marie took off her apron, dashed into the bedroom to powder her. nose. Heavens! Her whole face was shining, and her hair stuck to her damp forehead. Oh, well—it didn't matter. They sat around the table, their chairs—the four straight chair* from th* living room, the two bedroom chairs, th* two kitchen ehair* and the two kitchen chairs borrowed at the last moment from the girl downstairs—aa dos* they scraped together. Pop sat at th* head of th* table and carved the roast. “Who likes it well done?” he asked jovially, as the knife he had sharpened carefully, slid off the first brown outer slice. And then h* Mid, an ansions note In th* joviality: "And who likes it rare ? Clem ? Ada, I think I've heard you say—" ’l’d like another hot roll," Edwin said politely. "So would I, please," Irwin echoed. Smiling nervously, Mari* hurried oat to the kitchen. Put th* leftover rolls on a Hate. To buy 1< roll* for 10 people. She must have been crazy. But two dozen rolls sounded like so much—“l don't like to speak of it. Marie/' Jessie said, diffidently, “but did yon forget the tea ? I don't mind, myself, but Bert kind of likes hi* with his dinner. I guess we're Just old fashioned - Oh, well, there was enough lemon pie, anyway, and it was good. The bakery knew how to make pie. “A very nice dinner," Unele Clem told her kindly. “Very nice, inAnd Pop said, T think Marie did real well. She hasn't had much ezperienee, you know." The company smile wa« frozen tm Marie's face. Nobody was having any fun. Why didn't they go home ? They did, finally. "W'ell, Mattie, well drop yon off on the way," Jessie said, a* she struggled into the tight sleeve* of her jacket. “No, Edward will take u», thank you." So Edward took them. Marie put the borrowed chairs on the back poreh, out of the way. She looked at th* wreckage of the feast El win and Irwin had pulled odd grape* out of the bunches. Somebody had left grape skin* in a tea cup. Somoene else had dropped a piece of pie, and stepped on it The teapot had dripped on th* tablecloth. Plates wer* piled upon plate*

'Gee, you look wonderful in that blaek beret!” “Swell day, Mb* Wilaon!" Every morning was a fresh adventure. Wonder what'll happen today? Who’ll drop in? Will there be any big order? Will the proof* for th* last picturM be ready?” “You're your osn* boss,” Walt said, “Take aa much time a* you need at noon.” She tried to be conscientious about it, but that* were so many things to do at noon. Window shopping. Manicure*. HaireuU. Shampoos and finger waves. A new slip to look around for. Shoes for th* new fall tvreed Herta had practically given her. Walks to Chinatown with Fay •'aughlin. Hertz' bookkeeper, who alm got ezeiting models for practically nothing. An occasional art exhibit Lunches with th* little group of girls she'd met at work.... And most important, of course, the lunehee with Walt, when he was m town. Walt was showing her San Francisco. He thought it was a crime that she'd been her* more than a half year and hadn't been to al! the show places and beauty spots yet. So their lunebee were always eleiting. One day they'd go to the Italian quarter, for “the best spaghetti" m town. Another day they'd be at Fisherman s wharf for seafood, just out of the water. She kaew all the big hotels, the famous small restaurants, the smart bars, the shops, the out of.the-way for-ign sections, the docks, the almost forgotten historic spot*. Iler letter* to Julie were brief and bright: •There's a good erh-bit)cm of Jade at Gump's, I went baek twiee to see lt ~ .Walt and a couple of buyers and I had lunch at Pierre's and dropped in a show for a little while afterward ... I may stay over to the symphony tonight, for Edward said he'd be late." Julie pored over th* letters. _ "Two months ago," she said to Charlie, "it was all apartment and lake, and wild docks in the park and th* beautiful Oakland hills. 1 could walk mtbthat apartment in the dark and find everything in it. she's described it so thoroughly. now," Julie said. "I can't My that I fell in love with her Edward on sight. Frankly. I didn't like him then and I don't like him now. But I most say he's turned out pretty reliable and steady, and I tell you, Charlie, I don't think It's right for a wife to be gone all day.’and dash home and serve a sardine on a lettuce leaf and call it dinner. I don’t think she ought to. I've been anxious to get up there for months and now I'm going. You'll come, won’t you Charlie?" “Well, I don't mind the highway, bet I hate strange towns and traffic." “Marie will drive when we get there! Or Edward—or somebody." “Well. I got a little business 1 want to watch until after the first of next week ... will you wait ten days?" “I suppose TH have to." "That'll give you time to let her know.” She looked at him pityingly. "Oh, Charlie! We're not going to let her know! We want to see how things ARE!" How things were! In spite of her bright letters to Julie, Marie was nearly mad, trying to decide how things wer* . . . and how they'd be next There was no use pretending any more. Edward didn't have a job. He hadn't had one since early in August A* he himself explained, “there's no use driving out to the darn spot hanging around al! day when there are ten salesmen to every prospect, and there isn't a ehanc* in a million. Everyone says I was a wonder to make the sales I did .. "Two," Marie said. But after all, two made it plural. "Two mor* than a lot of the boys made!" She sighed. She couldn't expect him to perform miracles. But why did he lie about it, and let her think he was working vreeks after it was all ever? He had no answer for that But after she knew, after there was no more need for pretense, he stopped getting up in the mornings when she did. He no longer met her at th* station with the car. She’d walk the l<m< uphill blocks alone, eome into an empty apartment that smelled of stab cigaret smoke and burnt bacon grease, walk into a bedroom with an unmade bed. It •J’lved the problem of dinner, she told berseif, trying to be philasophical about it. He rarely earns home for dinner. Rarely earn* home before the small hour* of the morning. Things got so bad that they could hardly speak without quarreling, so she trie<! not to mind when he was away.
