NEW YORK. — Your eorrepondent begs leave to add his veak and quavering voice to the feneral chorus seeking mercy for he Federal Theatre Project He Jilnks back with pleasure and jrofit on his experiences in the day houses where the WPA arista held forth, and recalls the fact that he once had hoped it would mean the establishment of » Peoples' Theatre in America. We all know our commercial >tage has the best of it so far as theatrical fare is concerned, but .t necessarily limits theatre at.endanee to the comparatively affluent and the fortunate who ive within reasonable traveling distance of the few cities blessed with legitimate show houses. Time was when traveling companies were thick, as Mr. Wootl.•ott would say, as flies—when a olay could reasonably expect a ■housand performances in one place or another and by one company or another Then the movie, came along and stole tne audicnees. Now. vour correspondent has nothing against the movies. He has even seen one or two of them and found them good. Rut the theatre offers a satisfaction to the psyche, an experience In communication which even the best movie cannot give, ft lan t that movies are had or that the flesh and blood theatre Is good. It's simply that they are two expressions of an art form—like water color and oil painting A good oil could be good only as an oil painting. But that doesn't make a water color any the less telling. You'll note that the defenders of the WPA Theatre Project Inelude not only the actors and actresses ‘hemselves, but the business men of the theatre—manlagers and producers. And transferring the people °n the Theatre Project from WPA to home' relief certainly won't make the!

world of the theatre—or your own world, for that matter, the more gay. The first WPA play your correspondent saw was a gusty and windy Shaw opus, mounted and played with Broadway competence and fluency. It was gratifying to see that a half doxen of the fine actresses and actors who had a pari in making that play a success where the sainted Theatre Guild had failed, were later playing in commercial productions and drawing the praise of the critics. We recall with pleasure the fine evening when Chicago's Federal Theatre unit invaded New York with a real novelty, the Swing Mikado, which served as inspiration for tne eminently successful Hot Mikado now at the Worlds Fair. Under the aegis of WPA the Swing Mikado was a success, playing to full houses at low prices. When the commercial theatre took it over and raised the prices, the show promptly folded "The Life and Death of an American" Is a genuine American document which could have found no stage if the Peoples* Theatre had not existed. "Sing for Your Supper," the WPA revue which /u the subject of so many jibes because it took a year of preparation, has an advance sale of Si6,ooo—a figure which makes many a commercial theatrical mouth water. So we leave it to the gentle reader to tell us and his Congressman what it would profit the country to kill this flourishing theatre, which brings the footlights within the reach of millions who otherwise would never see a legitimate stage production. The Federal Project Is one of the healthiest expressions of America’s devotion to the good, the true and the beautiful. Your correspondent ' hopes that It will be permitted to i survive.
