CHAPTER XXIII All In *ll. life wm not too comfortable for Chris that summer. Lily, without Kaus about, had clumped into • romfortabl* latharry, and the house was in chranle disorder. The heat was tarrifle in the null district, and man were drisktsg water from a river which, a* Tad Law renee said. waa too thin to plow and too thick to drink. And Chris waa too busy aomeUtnaa even tn aaa Beverly at all. Than <<ne day out of a clear and boiling hot aky Jerry Arne* came back from wherever ha had been, arriving armed with flower* for the sick woman and a ring in a box for Beverly— to learn of her engagement. "Engaged he said, whitelipped and incraduloua. "To whom?" “To Chria Arden." “The doctor fellow! I don't believe IL You’re not serious, are you?" "Very serious." "I don’t get it." he aaid finally. "It ian’t you. What aort of life will you have?" “The aort I want, Jerry." "How do you know what you want? I auppoM thia is your mother’* work. She never liked me. Anybody else, but not me." “What do you mean by that?" He laughed. “Listen." he Mid. •Are you telling me that thia fellow without a nickel to hi* name simply walked up here and asked you to marry him? I don’t believe it.” She sat very still for a long time after he had gone, striding out of the house, his face still rigid with anger.* It wasn’t true, of course Chria had come to her because he loved her. Jerry was angry, that was all; angry and unreliable. What did Jerry matter, or what he Mid? Down in his room Chris, preparing for sleep, found that Lily had put a battered book of Henry's on hi* table, and carried it to bed with him. It was the "Rubaiybt.” and his eyes fell on the line Henry had Quoted: “The Worldly Hope men set their Hearts upon Turns Ashes, or it prospers; and anon. Like Snow upon the Desert'* dusty Face. Lighting a little hour or two—is gone." He put the book down and stared flrr some time at the disfigured wallpaper. Hu was more cheerful the next morning, making h>« rounds contentedly enough, walking in the heat, climbing into tenements where the air felt like a hot stove. And toward evening he turned down the coverings from a feverish child to examine some faint pink spots on the abdomen and then straightened with a set face. It was typhoid again. Katie had become Miss Walters. She had done so a* easily a* she had slipped between the clean sheets of her hospital bed that first night and ultimately gone to sleep. In her closet were hanging her striped uniform dresses, the skirts made by Miss Barker to escape the floor hy two inches; below them sat her high black shoes with rubber heels, and cn the eloeet door hung a paper bag marked “Laundry.” The room was new, the furniture new also, since this was the new lewis Nur*M‘ Home for the training school. A bed. a bureau, a table, and two chair* furnished it, with a scrap of rug in it* exact center. She was excited and more than a trifle suspicioua of her surroundings. The glimpses she had caught nt the nu r*M had showed her a sober and efficient group, and the appalling order of everything rather disturbed her. But already that first evening the had decided cn several matter*. One was that she disliked Miss Simpson, sitting behind that desk of her* with her black silk dress swirling about her, and keeping her standing while she inspected her through her glasses. “You will be given three months. Mis* Walters." she had said. “In that time you will have to show, whether you will be competent to'

finish your course or not. The work I* exacting. We ean afford no mistake*. You will be given order*, and It io your duty to carry them out.” "That’s all right with me." Miss Simpson eyed her carefully. "My name is Simpson, Mis* Simpsen." “Ym, Miss Simpson." Mid Katie, suddenly meek. "Another thing. I have accepted you on probation, young a* you are. because Doctor Arden thought you would do well here. I hope you will live up to that, but you understand that there are very rigid regulations as to nurses, internee, and the staff. No former acquaintanceship with any of them means anything while you ar* here. The doctors are your superior officers, nothing else." "If you are referring to Chris Arden-" "Doctor Arden. Ntx I refer to all the men connected with the hospital.” But she had meant Chris. Katie knew that anti writhed under it She was to let Chria alone, was she? She liked the matron of the Nurses’ Home a* little a* she liked Miss Simpson; a short, heavy woman with her hair parted and drawn back into a tight knot on her neck. Nevertheless Katie, lying in her bed that warm summer night, felt a faint pricking of excitement They did not like her, those two old women, but she would make good in spite of them. She would work and learn, and some day she would be accepted. Then Chris would see what she was. She closed her eye* and thought of Chria. By noon the next day Katie w dropping on her fee* She had carried innumerable trays, bed pan*, and feeding cup*. She had been taught to change a bed without lifting the patient Her back was aching from leaning over, and her head was heavy from ho-pital odor*. But she waa young and quick. It waa a hot and wilted Katie whom Chria found when he cam* in that afternoon. Long before he came »he had recognned that slightly arrogant step of his in the hall, and had hastily run her hand* over her hair. Coming into the ward, be went directly to his case, and only nodded to her. When he had finished, ho stopped for a moment “Well, Miss Walter*, how does it go?" She flushed at hi* impersonal tone. "All right. Doctor. It's pretty messy, but I’m learning." “Good." he observed, and went out again, leaving her resentful and hurt He had kissed her good-bye, and now she was Miss Walter* and a stranger to him. She went back to her wort, her mouth set and her head high; but that night for almost the first time in her rather detached young life she shed bitter tear* alone and in silence. It waa within a few weeks of that time that the typhoid hit and hit hard. The heat had continued and with it the drought. Chris, after that first ease of his, had carried a bottle of ety water to Dickinson at the hospital and got his report. It was a grim one, and he took it to Jenkin* at once. “Looks like a problem in arithmetic to me. jon. What's it about?" “Typhoid. That’s all" “Well, tell ’em to boil their water. That's the idea, isn't it?" "They won't do it, Jenkins " “Then they deserve what they get," Mid that gentleman tersely. Before he left, however. Chris had blocked in a huge card and hung it on the wall. “Boil all water.” it Mid. “By city order." Jenkins queried th* last three word*. “I'm part of the city." Chris said. I “and I order it. W hat’s wrong with that?" “You wont be part of it long If you raise a fuss, son. Get uii*. Chris. Either you'r* with the crowd, or vou're not ." But there came * time when even the Lewis paper* printed daily the ord-r that the eity water be boiled. A u-ajor catastrophe wm threaten-
ing. and Lewi* and the machine were beaten and knew It. The opposition press wm bitter and outspoken; pointing out again and again that the river wa* a sewer, that th* city had no proper filtration plant, and that th* house* in th* mill district were largely d*pendrtH on well* and had po sewage system whatever. Case* poured into th* hospital. Katie, rushing from thia to that, had to mak* her way around cot* which Mt everywhere, even in th* halls. For Chria it wa* merely a repetition of the year before, coupled with a fresh indignation. It wa* hard to face Lewi* those days, or even to conceal his re»i ntment (rum Beverly. Daya went by when Beverly never mw him, or when he dashed in to hold h*r for a moment and then dashed out again. Whs* he had an hour with her. he wa* worn and haggard, too tired to talk, too tired even to notic* her increasing aloofness. Actually he lost the battle during those week*, although be did not know it until later. For Beverly needed him and needed him badly. She was worn to a thread, highstrung and taut Her mother, rousing out of a stupor in the middl* of th* night, would find her bemdaa the bed, a haggard young figure of despair in a dressing g> wn over a thin nightgown, and try to send her back to bed. Annie herself wm only halfaware of her, occupied as she wm with the tedious business of dying. She had no curioaity now, only aa infinite patience. Sometimes Staunton sat by her bed. but it was rather late to make much difference, save that it wa* interesting to roe him at last facing something that he could not dominate. She would have preferred a mu at her side. Some one. for instance, to My: “See here, old girl, snap out of it. Where’s that hand of yours? Hiding out on me, aren't you! Such a sretty hand. Mother. Nobody has tends like youra." One* or twice she asked for Chria, and by some miracle he found time for her. She would doM off and rouse to find him sitting quietly beside the bed. big ami dependable. He had very little to My. but sometime* he would reach over and lay his hand over hers; and once he Mid that the had beautiful hands. It was like her dream come true. There was no time for tor*, making during th-ee day*, no time even for sleep or for decent living. People were dying like flies in hot t.nement rooms, in shabby little house*. The end of September mw Chris worn in body and mind. He had hardly seen Beverly* for a month. He worked furiously, but always with a sense that the battle wa* lost lefore he began. Then on a bad day about that time, eye* red from sleeplessness, and revolt in hi* very soul. Chris found a brisk young man in hi* office, who asked him what he thought about it. “Think about it? 1 think it'a murder." There was more of it He attacked the local administration, th* water •upply. the rampant graft which kept the city too poor for proper reform*. He Mt back in hi* chair and unloaded all hi* fatigue, hi* helpless wrath, and hi* indignant pity. It was probable ruin, but h* did not car*. And ruin in a sens* it proved to be. An evening paper that night ran a thre*-eolumn head line. “Epitemie I* Murder, Say* City Physician." Chris did not *m th* paper. H* seldom mw newspapers at all in thorn day*. He knew nothing about it until that evening when, office hour* over, Staunton Lewis walked into th* back room and slapped th* paper down on his desk. “Did you My that?" Chris glsneed at the paper. "I did. What’s more, I mean it." Lewis said nothing further. Re looked around the shabby room, gave Chria a hard, sharp glance, and went out as abruptly a* he had entered, (To be continued> W Man Srao, SUM Mt ObirWew* k. bms raaurea SnSvaaa, tel
