< HAPTEB XV! That was t'hrielinas Bve of Chris"* first year in prectice. and he was never to (orgvt IL Jake lived for a few minutee more, but ho did not move again. Tbs crowd drifted out, to be replaced by ambulance men. Katie was crying on . the stairs. Th* policeman still stood by. his cap in hi* hand. "Think ha'd been drinking, Doctor?" "No." said Chris brusquely. "He lived near here. He has a family." “Better send for them, then." But Chris shook his head. “No time,” be said. "And they’d bettor not see him like this. 11l tell them later." He did tel! them, when Jake had drawn his last breath and relaxed into the comfortable arms of death; told them carefully and gently and then remained until the first shock was over. He was deeply shaken himself, as he found when be was on the street once more; and it was only then that he remembered his dinner angagvment and looked at his w etch. It was after ten o’clock. He went back to the house. Nothing had been done, and he gathered up the blankets and juga and earned them back ta the kitchen. Lily Walters was slone there, a shattered figure, holding to her nose a hottie of aromatic ammonia. “Where's Katie?" ho demanded. “She might at least have picked up thio stuff.” “She's in bed," Lily said over her bottle. “She's young, and she oughtn't to have to see things like that.” “She’ll see plenty in a doctor's house." he told her roughly. "And she saw little or nothing. We can’t always escape life," he added more gently, “or even death." Then. "Was there any telephone message for me tonight?” “I think Katie got something," she said vaguely. "You might ask her, unless she's asleep.” But asleep or not, he meant to ask Katie; and he did so, banging on her dosed door in no uncertain manner, and finally eliciting a eullen. “What is it?" "Did you get a call for me?" “I don’t remember. 1 was too excited. When ho was carried in—" “Listen." ho said furiously. “Either you'll remember and remember fast, or I’ll break the door in and make you. Do you get that? Who called tonight?" “It was the Lewis girl." Her voice was sulky. “She said they were waiting dinner for you." “What did you teU her?" “I told her you were busy." “Is that all you tpld her?” “She didn’t ask any more." 1 He ewore under kis breath, confronting that closed door with a cold and bitter resentment His inclination was to kick it in as once he had , done with Diek’s, to jerk her out and stake her. But ho restrained him•r'f- - .. —. . -Very well." he said. “You've done a deliberately dirty triek tonight, and you know it. Now I'm giving you five minutes to get into your elothes and go downstairs to elean up the oftce. if you don't do it. Christmas or no Christmas, tomorrow you and your mother ean look for another plaee to live. I’ve had enough, and more.” He waited until he heard her movIng about the room. It was leas than five minutee before ata appeared, a childish figure hastily clad and completely disarming in her youth and tar evident fright. “All right." he said. “I’m going ouL Let the hypodermic alone, but elean up the rest And send your mother to bed. She needs it more than you do." On the street his anger died. It was eleven o’clock by that time, and all ta could hope was to explain ’ what had happened. But aa ta

walked rapidly ap tta hill hie «rtrite revived somewhat After all. violent death was nothing new to him. Life went oa. and ta was still young, and it was Christmas Eve. It was not until ta reached the grounds «f the Lewis house that he considered the wreckage of his evening clotbee. Re stopped, straightened his tiA and brushed his knees. But it was only too obvious that the party eras eear. Tta front doors as the house were open, and a Um of cars end shining carriages was slowly moving forward. At that point ta alasoat turned back. He did not belong there, among people like this, devoted to the fine decorum of living. He belonged down the hill, where Jake lay still and rested, and his own small sign was the badge of service. He went on, however. d« ggeuly waiting jaul the lari carriage had »evpt proudly out into the night, and then, dusty, untidy, and with his white tie still awry, presented himself at tta door to the eyes of a horrified manservant "I’m sorry to be so late," ta said. ”1 was expected to dinner, but I had an accident ease. Wil! you say that I have come to make my apologies*” “Certainly, air. Come in. Mr. Lewis is just inside, air." Tken ta saw Staaaton Lewie coming forward, inspecting him with penetrating eyes, but at least holding out his hand. “1 suppose you are Doctor Ar den,” ta said. “I began to think the only way to meet you was to have my daughter tuck me under her arm and carry me to your door." "I’m frightfully sorry, sir. I was detained.” “You look to me as though you had been detained by a locomotive!" said Staunton, well fed and good humored for tta moment, and still inspecting Chris with a certain amusement. So this was the impudent young pup who had set Beverly on him. and who was. according to Annie, too proud to marry tar. Well, he’d Men them like that before, young and uncompromising. It didn't last Nothing lasted but place and power. He smiled. "Beverly’s in the drawing room," he said. “You can make your peace with her. My wife's gone up to bed. Nothing serious, I hope?" “It was an accident case. A man struck by a trolley car.” became instantly alert. Men hit by trolley cars were apt to bring damage suite, or leave them behind them. “Serious?" "He died. I'm sorry to say. Noth mg to do for him.” Ho told tta story, and some of Lewis'* after-dinner complacence faded, although he was still courteous a* he led Chris into tta drawing room and left him to make kis apol Ogies to Beverly. But ta went at onee to his library and to the telephone. "Better get at it first thing in the morning.” he said, after explaining. “Settle before some ambulance chaser gets to the family.” Ho did not rejoin Beverly and Chris. Ho went upstairs and prepared for bed He knew theno trolley eases and tta ease with which they were usually settled. If not, and it went to court— H* was not afraid of any eoqpt. Even that young fellow downstairs was on tta eity pay roll new. Not a tad-look-ing lad. ta reflected. If Bevexly wanted him — Ho wandered into Annie's room , She tad taken off tar dress. Now , she held tar negligee closely over her breast and. looked at him. I*. , wa* Christmas Eve. and die a!wayt i felt sentimental at that time. That o tbe state I’m in!” She inspected him then, saw the tie, the dust, and even a small fleck of red on hi* shirt bosom. Saw more than that, for he was swaying slightly on his feet "Do you mind sitting down?" ta said suddenly. “I’ve had n hard day. Sorry all over again." He was still smiling, but she put him quickly into a chair and rang for some brandy. When she camo back to mm, ta tried to got up, but she held him down. That was how Holmes found them, coming in with tta brandy. Being Holmes, however, he remained impassive under tta and when the brandy had wvived him, Chris told the story pf tta evening. Beverly sat very still listening. but when he came to Katie, she stiffened. “She only said that you were busy.” she put in. “She waa excited, poor kid.
