i > DOCTORS
SYNOPSIS It was two weeks (inc* Dr. Chris Arden completed hi* interaeehip ■nd started a practice of hi* own. Hi* first mistake was to rent an office and room from th* shiftless Walter* family but he had felt sorry for mild, inefficient Henry Walter* and hi* drab, listlesa wife. Lily. They obviously needed the money. Lying in bed thi* Sunday morning, hi* sympathy grows when he hear* the sharp voice of Katie, their daughter, in the nest room. When Chris arise*. Henry apologetically ask* him to use the back etair* to the bathroom instead of going through the room of Henry’e ne’er-do-well son. Dick, as the latter i* sleeping and ha* the door locked. CHAPTER II -All right, Mr. Walter*. 11l use th* back stair*," he called, and with something very close to compassion listened to that gentleman'* apologetic retreat. Then he got out of bed, put on hi* old dressing gown, gathered up hi* towel—he already knew better than to leave it in the bathroom—and with a caution* glance at Katie’* cloved door went down the front stair* and through the dining room to where a narrow flight of steps led up to the bathroom Quietly as he had moved, however, Mrs. Walters in the kitchen had heard him, ■nd row she confronted him with a worried frown. She was a small woman with untidy, faded, blonde I hair and an air of having known ’ better days. Now she looked fright- . ened, as though this new security for her and her* was thn atenod. "I'm terribly sorry. Doctor. I've tried to get Dick out. but -well, I guess you know bow it is." “Don't you worry about it,” he told her cheerfully. “A little exercise in the morning i* good for me. Later on? when the waiting line of patient* extends out into the hall, it might be awkward! But not yet." She was very near to tears, he saw. and he got himself away and up the steps in a hurry. After all, it was not entirely her fault that her children were what they were. Nor, he considered, a* he ruefully surveyed the bathroom when he reached it, was it her fault that the tub had not been cleaned by its last user the night before. That would have been Katie, he knew. The odor of cheap scented snap still filled the air, and her towel lay in a damp heap on the floor. • He cleaned the tub carefully, hi* mind still on the Walters family and hi* own ctuation The Walters', he realised, liad been an error, but what was a man to da ? Medicine a* a profession made no allowance* for poverty. It exacted years of preparation and study, it eared for him during hi* interneship in some hospital or other, and then it shot him out into th* world to sink or swim It gave him ethic* and even idvnls, but it made it mighty hard to live up to them, or even to live at all. Anu now he had the Walters' and the Waiters' had beer, a mistake. He bathed and shaved carefully and with deliberation. One* somebody tned the door, and he grinned into the mirror That also would be Katie, ho thought. Well, let her wait He had had plenty of Katie, and he was like'y to have more; for already be knew that without his help th* Walter* family had reached •Jiv end of the road. H't mind harked back to a sulky girl in a ward bed after an operaI tion for appendicitis, and Henry Walters beside it, shabby but with

"How about It, Katie? Want a doctor in the house?" “1 never want to see a doctor again!" Ncvertheiea* he had taker, the office*. Th* location wa* good, and Henry Walter* wa* a salesman, if he wa* not much of anything el*e. “Look at them. Doctm! Blate of (unshine in them both. And the jtreet car* atop right at the door. That’* an advantage, too." “Very good sonahine," said Chris, giving praise where praise was due. But there was an urgency in Henry Walters' voice which was not far from desperation, and so in the end Chris had taken the rooms. For th* payment of the house rent, light, and heat, he wa* to have hi* offices and a furnished bedroom, and the service for all three "And if you’d like a bit of breakfast." Henry added largely, "well. I don't suppose we’ll quarrel over that." They might well have quarreled over th* breakfast*, a* Chris soon discovered; but he had taken them for better or for worse, and already Chris knew that he could not turn them back to derpair. Katie’s voice came up to him from th* kitchen below, high and shrill with resentment “Well, I don’t care. Mother First he wake* me up. and then he spend* an hour ia the bathroom I've got a* much right there a* be ha*." Something of Chris'* morning cheerfulness left him He picked up

and weanng a new necktie of jojpou* rather than gaudy colors. Nothing to show that it waa not just another Sunday morning, with aa entire city seemingly unaware that here was a new doctor ready to serve them. There was still a thrill in that descent, although the bright morning sun of early spring showed the frayed stair and hall carpets, and tbe battoreu hail table with a crooked mirror over it. His realm lay beyond, and with a firm and professional step be entered hi* waiting room. It had a certain dignity, he considered. with it* line of chair* around the wail* and ito eenter table covered with new magazine*. It wa* empty, however, and hi* keen eye* saw that It had not been eleaned that morning, or indeed as usual. There waa a slight film of dust on the table, and so he took out hi* liandkerchief and carefully wiped it off. It was no surprise therefor* to go through the double connecting door* and find hl* consulting room in the same condition. “Drat the woman!” he muttered, ■nd after weighing the diaadvantage* of calling in Lily or Katie and watching them shift th* dust from on* object to another, got out hi* handkerchief again and carefully set to work <To be continued.! r-wI»M k, K,-, KMkkM WUrtk-iwe Sr Xue rMU><« l.kSi-au las
