Six Million Trees, Grown In State Forest Nurseries, Will Be Planted This Spring in — ! Nursery beds and Service Building at Clark County State Forest, near Henryville
Six million trees, producced in state forest nurseries, will be used in reforestation plantings on public and private land in Indiana this spring. Virgil M. Simmons, commissioner of the Department of Conservation, said today. Already more than four hundred and fifty orders for trees are already on file with the Division of Forestry and it is anticipated that all available planting stock will ba taken before the shipping season begins. Approximately four million trees will be sold for reforestation of private land and the remainder will be planted on state properties operated by the Department of Conservation as a part of the development of these areas. In the past five years the state ; forest nurseries have produced and planted approximately 125 000,000 i trees. A large part of this produc-j ‘tion was used to reforest iand ac-, 1 quired for state forests and game preserves. Several million trees have been purchased by companies for reforestation of land where strip-mining operations have been completed, and thousands of acres of private land have been planted ■ in trees during the five year period. A majority of the trees sold for woodlot, windbreak and reforestation plantings on private land, ara shipped from the Clark County State Forest nurserv, near Henryville. Nurseries are also being developed at the Wells County State I orest and Game Preserve, and the Jackson County State Forest, which will increase the number of trees iL —' '- |,J -

available in future years. The Wells County nursery will eventually supply planting stock for most of the northern part of the state, eliminating long shipments. The nurseries have an inventory of eighteen to twenty-five million trees, with all stock grown from seed and kept in nursery beds for three to four years before it is available for planting purposes. Production of trees for reforestation is one of the major activities of the Division of Forestry, along with the protection of wooded acres from forest fire, and the encouuabement of timber production. All orders for trees from the state forest nurseries must be addressed to the Division of Forestry, Department of Conservation, State Library Bldg.
