COMMIES SCORE 27-21 VICTORY TUESDAY NIGHT Commodores Mark I |> Ninth Victory Os Season Last Night The Decatur Commodores chalkeq up their ninth victory of the stusoii Tuesday night with a 2721 victory over tlie Portland Panthers at the Commodore gymnasium. The Commies, displaying their smoothest style of the season in the opening minutes, ran up an 11-2 lead before the Panthers scored from the field just before the end of the first quarter, which ended with Decatur out in front. 11-4. The Panthers fired in three baskets in rapid-fire order with the opening of the second period, and with live minutes of the period played. pulled tip to an 11-11 tie. A field goal and pair of free throws l»y Hess and Hackman's foul toss gave the Commodores a lead of Hi-11 at the half. The game grew rough after the well-played first quarter and as a result both teams played rather ragged ball. Although the Panthers made a determined battle to overcome the Decatur lead, the Commodores maintained their margin of not less than six points throughout the entire second half. The Commodores' scoring was well divided. Baker was high scorer witli three field goals and two free throws for eight points. Hess sectored six, Bolinger five. Hain and Hackman four each. Martin, diminutive forward, was outstanding tor Portland, scoring seven points and his floor play leading the Panther charge. It was Lankenau who led the winners, winding up his three game series ' with a 212 and a 213 for a 599. Briede followed with a 567. rolling 211 in his second attempt. E. Schultz with a 539 led the losers. Castings also won three, taking the Gamble kleglers into camp. 2,654 to 2.405. Ross with a 555 led the winners, followed by Hoagland with a 546. R. Woodhall led Gambles with a 507. Mies Recreation rolled the highest score of the evening, posting a 2.846 to win two games over Cloverleaf in their 2,730 series. Mies rose to the heights in chalking ttb a 655 score. He started with a 247. then bowled a 207 and wound up with another 200-break-er. 201 to be exact. Lyons rolled | 593. For the losers Farrar also posted a 600 score, chalking up 612. Frisinger followed with a 562. Hooten marked a 224 his second game. Burke's Standard Service won two from Hoffbrau. 2.450 to 2.340. Last I season, the Commodores were forced to an overtime period before defeating the Trojans, 26-25. —oOo — The Yellow Jackets will be away from home Friday night, traveling to Hoagland to battle the Allen county team. Hoagland surprised net fans in this section recently with an upset triumph over NewHaven and the Jackets/will have their work cut out for them to come through to victory. Jacob Ruppert, owner of the world champion New York Yankees, and multi-millionaire brewer, was critically ill today at his fifth avenue apartment. The gray-haired 71-year-old bachelor sportsman has been confined to bis bed since April with a complication of diseases which followed an attack of phlebitis inflaina-■ tion of he leg. His condition became so serious yesterday afternoon that extreme unction was administered by a Catholic priest. He had been in a coma most of the day but regained consciousness early last night and apI ptared to have rallied slightly.; Early this morning, his attending physician, Dr. Otto Schwerdtfeger. said Rupppert was “resting .easily and sleeping peacefully." All 'members of his family— a sister, brother, two nephews and three nieces—were in the apartment. The seriousness of his illness was a surprise to the baseball world.
